Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

    >>The draining at 1% a minute can't be any setting I had in place before the latest update - I unboxed the device and >> configuring/installing any apps or messing with any settings the update got applied.

You are absolutely right, that is exactly what makes no sense to me and what is keeping me from buying a new 4s.

The fact is that this procedure worked for me on 3 devices (one 3gs and two 4). The 3gs was totally unusable after the upgrade to ios5. Now you can use it for an average of two days without charging.

I don't have any 4s to test, so I have to guess, but there could potentially be two main issues:

    1. Devices upgrading from ios4

    2. Iphone 4s

In the first case, I'm quite sure that my guess is correct.

In the second, there could be some problems related to new features (siri, etc) that has been addressed by 5.0.1. Some were solved, some not yet.

It seems that nobody has solved battery issues upgrading to 5.0.1, probably because the upgrade doesn't modify your existing buggy configuration.

I don't know, I'm only guessing, but the fact is that resetting to factory solves more problem than upgrading to 5.0.1...

The battery drain issue is real. It is not just a simple matter of restoring or resetting the phone. I have been having battery drain issue since the first day I got the phone. Updating to ios 5.0.1 only made it worse. I was losing about 3%/hour on standby with 5.0.0 Every single bell and whistle was switched off, including 3g data, wifi, location, bluetooth...

I had started the phone as a brand new phone out of the box instead of restoring from my backup. Heck, I didn't even plug it into itunes till 3 days later.

    I have done:

-Switch off every bell and whistle.

-Countless restore to a new phone by the method in this thread where you connect to itunes, switch off the phone, press home and power button to enter recovery mode.

-"Soft reset" that made my old 3g slightly faster after the update to ios4

-"Reset all settings" via the setting in the phone

And my battery is still draining at an incredible rate. The usage time is also unreal because I can charge the phone full, leave it on standby overnight and be greeted with 5hours of usage in the morning...So perhaps those methods discussed can fix SOME issues, it doesn't mean the battery drain is not real.

Ok, but how do you explain that resetting to factory solved problems even on some iphone 4s?

Here we have a group of iphone 4s with a decent battery life and another group with untollerable low lasting battery.

How could you explain that without thinking about different configurations?

    Defective battery on some devices?

I've no idea if the issues are hardware, software of config. But differing hardware could well be a cause. Different batches of components installed by different production lines in differing sub-contractors iPhone manufacturing plants might be an issue.

I'm also suffering from battery drain but I can't tell if it got worse after updating to 5.0.1. It would be great to have 12h of use and still 39% of battery but I actually didn't use it for 12h - a maximum of 2h would be correct (over night it drained from 67% to 42% in just 8h of standby). My settings:

    • disabled wifi
    • disabled automatic timezone
    • disabled location based iAds
    • one Exchange email account is running
    • no apps running over night
    • wifi disabled over night

At this point I'm far from satisfied with the new iPhone 4S because of the much decreased battery life. I previously had an Android device before I had the first generation iPhone (which I loved). I hope this gets fixed very soon otherwise I'm going to return my device.

For the first time this approach helps:

Do a Hardreset of you iPhone. Hold down Home and the Powerbutton. Ingnore the Slide to Turn-Off.

But, after using the slider to turn off sometime later, the Phantom usage is back.

Consequently, the battery very quickly empty again.

PLEASE READ THIS, AND WRITE WHAT DO U THINK?

    I did next test:

I have all things off, only Imessage all the time is running, brightness on minimall.

First test: (still options are as above). I watched clips on YouTube by 3G technology - 25 minutes watched - 7% battery lost.

Second test: (still options are as above). I used only iMessage by 3G technology, together 100 messages (40/60), 2 hours - 27% battery lost.

In the both case battery had 100%.

    I have iPhone 4S 32GB Black.

Well, more resource hungry should be rather clips, than iMessage right?

What I'm liking is having just charged my iPhone and then disconnected it, I checked a couple of emails for 2 minutes and the Usage stats say it's been in standby for 2 mins from last charge AND in use for 2 mins from last charge. Unless I'm misunderstanding what those times represent, it can't have been both in use and in standby for the same period of time.

    Buggy.

I have updated to 5.01, but i don't see any signficant improvement to my battery life.... I fully charged the phone at 1 pm, went out of my apartment, received 2 voice call (less than 10 second each) and recived 3 SMSes, and 3 replies to the SMSes....  I'm down to 77% at 4pm... No internet usage at all... I haven't managed to get more than 1 day of standby from this **** expensive phone.... This is totally unacceptable... Are there return policy in Singapore? Is it the same as in US?OMG, i don't want to be stuck with such a sucky phone for 2 years....

And yes, no usage of the phone but i just don't understand why the phone record the high hours of usage instead instead of just standby time...

I have already posted about my shocking battery life before and after updating to 5.0.1, but have found that a complete discharge of the battery to 0% and full recharge to 100% (with the phone turned off) has greatly improved my battery life. This is still with all features turned off so isn't a fix, but might help some people until apple actually fixes it

After being plagued by battery issues too, I finally bit the bullet and reset my settings (and restore as a new phone), and it works!

    Usage: 12 minutes

    Standby: 13 minutes

    Battery: 100%

Something to try that's non-destructive. Heck, it even keeps your icon layout...

Looks like my days of 3 hour battery life are over!

Another problem is that the phone gets pretty warm or rather HOT when i tried to surf the internet using my 3G dataplan... It feels like a hot potatoes in your pants after 10 minutes of usage... Is this a hardware problem? Should i do a 1 for 1 exchange?

Well after update battery life has not improved at all. No changes to my settings.

I have 4s 32G white on uk vodafone network. already asked for an exchange but new phone has similar poor battery life. It must be a combination of poor components and software, maybe becuase they use different suppliers for some of the same components.

Did the reset, set up from new, disables all location settings, push e-mail etc etc

    made no difference.

    Apple this is unacceptable..
