Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

No, don't use any backup. Then it will work. I know, it means a lot of work to do, but restore all your contacts, apps, etc. manually. Not out of backup file or cloud. I did it already twice. 1. when I changed from iPhone 4 to 4 s

(after using the backup file from my iPhone 4 battery died after 5 hours altough I didn't use it, after doing the restore as I explained, I've got a standby value of aprox. 3 days). 2. same as I changed from IOS5 to IOS 5.0.1.

There must be a mistake with the backup/restore routine. When using a backup file you will have a very very bad battery life and values of usage and standby are always nearly similar, altough you don't use your device.

    alexander,

you don't really need to manually reinstall everything.  you can merely fix the issue in most cases (even if you have previously installed from backup), by "resetting all settings" located under settings -> general -> reset.  when you get through the setup process, choose "setup new phone".  however, don't let the terminology confuse you.  all your apps, contacts, mail, data, etc will still be there.  it will have only reset the system level settings which appears to be where the standby drain problem is. after that be sure to completely dischage battery and recharge fully.  i have seen it work now on 10 more people successfully, reducing standby battery loss significantly from 2-4% per hr or more to less than 0.5%.  i am personally on my third day now with very good results.  more details on my thread here:

Perhaps standing on one leg and extending the phone in the opposite arm while touching your toe is the solution.  I'm betting if you carry a divining rod while you talk on the phone battery life will improve. Yes I'm being sarcastic but to make a point.  Y'all are putting too much effort into this. Unless there is a runaway process (which you can just kill) all this "install this way or backup this way" is a bunch of bunk.  After I received my 4s and iCloud was functioning I restored my 4, 4s, and iPad 2 from each others backup without incident of any sort.  My advise to you all is to turn off the % setting and enjoy your phone.  Use it until it shuts off or nearly shuts off.  The % indicator is just that a rough display of remaining power.  It's not much more than a "dummy light" on your automobile.  My devices on iOS 5.0.1 will go a day with moderate to heavy use regardless of what the % says.  I especially enjoyed the posts from people who said they only could get 100 hours on standby after upgrading to 5.0.1 when not even 48 hours had passed since the update was released.  TURN OFF THE PERCENT INDICATOR AND ENJOY YOUR PHONE.  SPEND TIME WITH A LOVED ONE OR EXCERCISE OR GO TO THE MALL.  I'm betting the battery issue will solve itself.

Alright, what's the most efficien way to do that? Can you use the I tunes sync to restore your music, videos, apps, address book contacts, etc? Please explain your solution. Also, I think a lot of us, like my self are getting spec for Standby time and no Phantom Usage. However ACTUAL Usage is killing the battery like crazy. I can get only 3hr 45min on 3G web or talk max. What's the solution for us? I've tried full DFU restore, took it to the apple store, full cycle charges and no matter what can't get above 3hr 45min to 4 hours of 3G actual usage.

Outside of the defective hardware realm - and the solution for that is replacement or refund - the solution has always been http://www.apple.com/batteries/iphone.html - i.e. turning things off like time zone etc and setting mail to 1 hour pull. It is a 6hrs 3G internet device.

It may be hard to bear, but the real solution to actual - serious - usage is called... BlackBerry. I know it hurts. Sorry.

As I've said earlier it doesn't make sense to compare the usage.

If you use a GPS app - the battery will last for few hours.

If you set to flight mode and listen to music it will last for many hours.

I don't know if my battery is better or worse than normal, but it last for around 36 hours with mixed usage.

I can live with that since it can charge each night when I'm sleeping

Just bought my iphone 4S two days ago. I did a backup of my old phone.

Last night when I went to bed, my phone was at 100%. I left it on standby, not plugged to anything.

When I woke up ~ 8 hours later, the phone was near 0%. I did not have anything running in the background.

I am attempting the 'restore settings' that someone above had suggested. It seems from other sites that Apple is aware of this...

Well, if your battery lasts for about 36hrs, then you could have paid 500$ less and bought an Ipod because that's the type of usage you're having. But more seriously, I agree with you that it's hard to compare usage because it depends on use. But honestly, most people buy the Iphone for internet use, whether it's web pages/youtube and multiple apps with all notifications, all their mail accounts with real time notification push/pull - it's all like RSS but for apps and mail. So then it means that the real number is 6hrs i.e. 3G internet usage. Someone who has no significant standby drain should reach 6hrs with reasonable settings at least. Nowhere does Apple say that there's a spec under 6hrs... GPS shouldn't make it less than 6 otherwise Apple should advertise that... i.e. 2hrs GPS device. So 6hrs can be one (small) day of heavy use or 2 days or 3hrs use and such. If they can't get that there's a problem. But if they want 2 days+ of real productivity use (as opposed to lifestyle use), they haven't chosen the proper device to do that. They should have been made aware of that, I think,
