Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

After juggling with turning off/on various settings for almost a week, I have established that the most battery draining setting by far is 3G. When I turn it on it starts losing the juice at 10% per hour or more. Without it, it's 1-2% per hour. I'm on the Deutsche Telekom network in a major German city, so the coverage is fine. Maybe the new HSPA+ has some issues...

I agree for 3G, but how did you switch OFF ?

There is a problem when the device drains when unused - and I think that is what most customers are complaining about.

I agree, this is the main problem. look at the standby time / usage time ratio.

I switch it off in the settings (cellular data), meaning no internet connection. So, not much of a solution, but at least I pin-pointed the (possible) cause.

Unfortunately, this doesn't turn off 3G in hardware (something that cannot be done with the 4S - why is a good question)... and some people might have an issue at that level i.e. because of poor signal and such, irrespective of data.

I also tried to do that. Percent power loosed by hours is then decreasing to about 2%

    in standby doing nothing.

But if you check the standby time and usage time, this one is still incrasing with no reason.

The only way i found in testing to stop usage time growing is to replace

my usual SIM card by a one for voice only.( no 3G allowed).

Then, exept for 3G , all is perfect. Still 100% after 3 hours standby

I agree.  The battery life is just bad.  We shouldn't have to turn off aal the features that make the phone worth using!

I guess you're wondering why you have usage time without "using" the phone? We can speculate but I hope you remember this:

Usage: Amount of time iPhone has been awake and in use since the last full charge.  The phone is awake when you’re on a call, using email, listening to music, browsing the web, or sending and receiving text messages, or during certain background tasks such as auto-checking email

i.e. usage is not = to "manual usage".

Basically, as you proved it, the only way to have usage never increase during standby is to have no 3G in hardware enabled - which you cannot do with the 4S. In the end I gather it's all a matter of measure as of course that "usage during standby" shouldn't account for the greatest part of the usage stat. And people with great usage during standby usually have big drains too. Which points to something looping at the 3G level... like mail.

I'm sorry that doesn't explain why you would have major drain during standby. I'm somewhat stating the obvious i.e. there will be usage during standby. It's just people tend to forget this.

I agree that doesn't explain why. Even after reinstall a fresh ios5.0.1 , hard reset and

installing nothing including no mail account, usage time is still growing when 3G

    allowed.

Now, i wonder how some lucky users here, can display screen capture

showing small usage time after hours standby.

Quite hard to troubleshoot. If there's no app and no mail, it could only be 3G coverage (can you have your operator deactivate/reactivate your phone) or a hardware defect. At least that's my take. I mean, what else is there left in the phone? I don't know what's the normal "usage during standby" let's say on a full day of use. Maybe a few mins per hour at most, something like that.

My first Iphone a 4S - got hooked on the platform by my current gen iPod touch...

I use my iPhone 4S as a business tool and am on call 24x7 so with these battery issues outside of hours I carry my charger with me everywhere and when I am at home keep the phone on charge. Before I went through savagely turning off bells and whistles (which we all love right? That's one of the attractions of the platform) I was seeing horrific battery life that has been well documented here, my most classic experience was going to bed and running Alarm Clock Pro - went to bed with phone on charger at 78% capacity. Woke up to the alarm and noticed that my phone was at 56%.

Either way turned significant amounts of bells and whistles off (Timezone, notifications, all mail manual, siri raise to talk off etc etc), the most important one left on being wifi. It has helped a lot turning stuff off - but for sake of repeating myself, dammit the reason why I love the phone so much is all those easy to use bells and whistles.

Now a 40 minute train journey and 20 minute walk to work I went from 99% to 96% charge. 3%/hour standby still.

If it wasn't a microSIM I'd have pulled my old Nokia out by now...

3G coverage here at home is very good and my "old" iphone4

under same conditions, is working fine in 3G an WIFI both turned ON.

usage time on IP4 is very small after may be 3 hours standby

    only 7 minutes usage time!

In my opinion now, nothing really effective could be find exept

by Apple of course. I hope they will be able to fix this by a software

    update.
