Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

    @troelsit

I really like your post. I think a lot of people were upset because they couldn't use the phones the way they wanted. However, I think as new product came out to the market, there was always a small percentage of problem both hardware and software issues. My friends advised me not to get it immediately when it was just fresh out in the market. I didn't so I had a battery defect. Luckily, I could return it to the store and wait a little bit more. I enjoyed reading this thread because some people were so mad that they either wanted to throw out their phones, or use completely funny words in a public forums. My point is it is a public issue, Apple will fix it.

In the mean time, thanks to a lot of tech users here to provide the ideas/steps to save the battery for 4S.

Otherwise, people will have another choice: to get other kind of phones that work exactly the way they want. If that is the case, then no need to praise other brand names or bad mouth Apple products. I want an iPhone because it is an iPhone and I don't want BB or Nokia or Samsung or Droid. But it also doesn't mean those phones are not good phones. I just don't compare Apples to Oranges( mean other smartphones) because they are not what I want. So I think a little bit patience will get a good results

Thanks for all of good contribution from users

I have done the download to upgrade to 5.01, the phone is worse. going to apple on tuesday if they can't fix it i shall ask for a refund and move on with my life. I have all apple products such as Macbook pro, Imac, touch and get great use out of them, but the phone needs to work and when i get up in the morning unplug the phone and get to work the battery is at 70% or less within just over an hour.

Maybe apple can explain why a £600 phone was not tested to death before selling it. It shows a lack of care to customers or even worse we are the testers.

I suppose the issue is simple, i like the phone. other than the battery it covers all my needs.

I will post the results from my meeting at the apple store.

The upgrade did help.... My usage is 7 Hours, 3 Minutes; Standby is 1Day, 12 Hours with 22% left I think it could be better also I'm with AT&T....the problem I'm still have is when the phone set idle and I make a phone call it goes to mute I can't hear who I'm calling and they can't hear me, I have to go to speaker phone.....

seem to me that playing games, especially those like Angry Birds and Contract Killer, really drains the battery. Much more on this phone, 4S, than on my 3gS. Anyone else?

Depending on what you did with that Usage. If its straight 3G surfing, calls etc. that's very good.

Today I was in a non-service area, the iphone 4s was in sleep mode and after a 3 hour visit with my family my phone went from 100% to 68% with absolutely NO usage. I have tried all the things listed below with no success.

For all 5.0 users, to make your battery life better:

    Reduce the screen brightness.

Disable email push and fetch. Set all to Manual.

Turn off bluetooth and most importantly wifi.

Turn of location settings for apps and all notifications.

    Uncheck everything in spotlight search.

    Disable ping under Restrictions.

    Minimize lock screen notifications.

Turn off the phone at night.

Set wallpapers to a simple black screen (take a pic in a closet)

    Disable vibrate.

Minimize number of sounds used, like keyboard clicks.

Essentially just turn every feature off. Don't play any music or use any apps either because they drain the battery also.

I've had an iphone from the very beginning, upgrading everytime a new one comes out, and I've never experienced a problem like this. We all bought it for these amazing features and you now have to turn everything off.  Wow, what a JOKE!!! I sure hope Apple gets this fixed soon.

While I believe how the phone handles 3G is a contributor to the battery drain, it is not the only source and may not even be the primary one.  I did a fresh restore on my 4S with no mail installed, no Apps started, most settings turned off, and on WiFi and was using 4% to 5% per hour on standy-by.  Better yet, my 3GS which no longer has an active SIM card is running 5.0.1 and was losing around 10% per hour in stand-by. I performed a restore on that phone and the battery drain is down considerably.  I believe the 4S is very inefficient with 3G but OS5 is creating some out of control background processes which may be terminated through restores, resets or battery drainage.  Ulitmately, we just don't know.

I believe it is indeed something like that, which is why I believed the update would "sink in" - so either it takes more sinking in, or Apple hasn't entirely figured it out or the remaining devices have hardware issues... yet I can see how that last point may be false as some pre-4S device were fine before and are tainted now since 5.0 and haven't recovered with 5.0.1. So we don't know. Worst is that we'll never know. Which is why I believe the best we can have is a video apology.

Cybderella1980, you just posted today Nov 13, 2011. There are some suggestions on how to solve the problem which include doing a Reset by doing Settings>About>Reset and a Hard Reset but holding the Home and Power button. Ingnore the swipe to turn off and wait for reboot.

You can contact APPLE, you can also use iPhone Configuration Tool which can be found at this address. http://support.apple.com/kb/dl851

There does not appear to be hardware issues.

Thanks for your post. Best of Luck

    Before try these steps.

If you continue to have iPhone Battery Problems after iOS 5.0.1 update please perform the following:

    1. First make sure that you backup you device in iTunes with Encryption on.
    2. Turn off any un-necessary network services such as WiFi and Blue Tooth.
    3. Make sure that you are in fact running iOS 5.0.1 by checking in General>About. It should read 5.0.1 (XXX)
    4. Perform a "Hard Reset" on the device.
    5. Do a reset by selecting Selecting Settings>General>Reset.
    6. Setup as a new phone, all your email and APPS will still be there.
    7. Use the device and let the battery drain down, under 10%.
    8. Do a full recharge using the power adaptor. (Make sure all the connections are secure.)

If the problem persist only after doing all the steps above:

    1. Backup and Encrypt your device in iTunes.
    2. Do a factory reset on the device.
    3. Perform the Update on the Device.
    4. Perform a Restore of the Backup.

Users of first generation iPads have extensive improvement by do the following:

    1. Selecting Settings>General>Reset.

** Depending on the device and applications installed your results will vary. Performing all of steps may not be necessary for every user. If however you hit a road block performing all the steps has proven to work.

Make sure to enter the following before your visit to the APPLE STORE..

    Best of Luck
