Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

    Thank you, drStrangeP0rk,

So just reset, drain, and then 24 charge?

Should you have your phone off or on when you charge it?

My battery life was a lot worse than my 3GS when I first got my phone.  Here's what I did that has helped a lot:

      1.  Display brightness is set to about 2/3.

      2.  Auto Lock Lock is set to one minute.

      3.  All my location services are set to "on" except Safari and Photos.

      4.  iCloud is Off.

      5.  Wi-Fi Sync is set to off on my PC.

      6.  Bluetooth is on all the time.

      7.  WiFi is on all the time.

      8. Auto Time zone set is off.

      9.  Siri is on (and I use it several times a day).

      10. Find iPhone is on.

      11. Email Push (from Google) is "off" with fetch set to 15 minutes.

      12. Notifications are mostly on, about half with badges and alerts.

My iPhone 4S battery now easily outlasts my 3GS.  With moderate email use and a little web surfing it is usually at about 75% when I put it on the charger at night, compared to 50% with my 3GS.  I am pretty happy with the battery life now.

Of course if you use any app that uses GPS don't expect the iPhone (or any other phone) to last long.

I am usually a forums leach but I thought if this helped someone I'd make an extremely rare post.

I think I have one possible solution to some of the battery problems out there.

Keep you phone away from any kind of magnets!

I have been doing some experiments all day with my iPhone 4S (running 5.0.1).  I am experiencing about 3 to 5 percent battery decrease every hour, 3 percent with many things turned off (wifi, bluetooth, etc), 5 percent with most normal stuff turned on.  I have tried several of the suggestions out there on the web.  Nothing made a significant difference. Until I removed my case which has some small magnets in it to allow it to attach to a cradle I have in my car.  Once I did this the battery usage dropped significantly.  I now see less than 1 percent usage per hour.  (I have the battery percentage shown as well.. some iphone battery setting I found in the Settings app.)

I hope this helps some people.

    hboxwala,

What you describe is the same as what I am seeing.  I can do a reset, restore or a battery drain to zero with most settings turned off and the battery consumption will be great if I don't initially touch the phone.  As soon as I look at the usage, the battery consumption will accelerate to much higher levels.

For me one thing that helped was adjusting my time zone.

I've noticed that not many posters here have looked at the phone's console logs. Going through mine I saw mention after mention that the phone was trying to set my time zone to New York but then decided it didn't need to adjust the time (or time zone) because it hadn't changed.

I had my time zone set to another EST city but as soon as I set it to New York, which is in the same time zone as me, the error messages about adjusting the time stopped. This may be the reason so many people are reporting turning off automatic setting of the time zone is draining the battery. It looks like Apple implemented a rather clumsy way to handle the problem, going by the console logs on my iPhone.

So for me setting the time zone to what the phone was looking for (which was in my same time zone) stopped the constant polling and comparison shown in the logs and I did notice better battery performance. I also installed iOS 5.0.1 and did a standard reboot.

Look for a free app called "console" and see what your phone is doing underneath the hood.

i'm facing the same problem here, actually i didn't change any setting in my iphone, but when i put it in flyght mode the battry didn't drain. i have a problem in receiving calls so i used the flyght mode and once i use it the battry was working very will. i'll be contacting my local mobile carrier for replacing the SIM to solve the calls issue after that i'll be checking if this have any affect at the battry performace

I am experiencing a poor battery life compared to my old iPhone 4. It just seems to drop even when I don't use it. Mine ran out in 24 Hours, and I hardly used it. 1 or 2 texts, quick flash to check the time. Less than 10 mins of usage. Went to bed last nite on 21% and woke up and it was dead.

This does not seem right to me. If I cannot get this fixed I might take it to the store and see what they say there.

Also I would like to note that I am running the latest 5.01. I have also done a complete restore from scratch and set up as a new iphone. Put in all my contacts manually and redownloaded all my apps.

From the Daily Mail, the iPhone 4S battery costs £3.68...no wonder they last less than previous models!

I'm having major issues with battery life on my iphone 4S. I updated the software and it's worse. Down to 50% by lunchtime with no calls and just light 3G use.

I agree with you.  I've done lots of tests over the past month, and there is something about the 3G access that causes the worst battery loss.
