Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

    What would make you happy?

N9 casing, Blackberry battery life and secured corporate mail, Apple IOS integration and app store, Android widgets, tweakability and browser zoom "reflow", with WinPhone active tiling that can subside to a grid if I want? Let's not forget swappable battery, micro-sd expansion and standard usb connector. Something like that lollllll I'll concede I'm quite demanding...

Everybody can  have his dream... but in this case you can dream on.

On BB batt life, i'd have to say... my 9000 Bold batt life sxxks when on 3G. Its permanently on GPRS/EDGE for me coz it does nothing but bbm and email. All the other functionalities pale compared to any smartphone in the market today.

I have the same issue, updated my iphone 4s and this has not made a difference. I have been using my phone for 31 minutes usage (as it says in the settings) and I am now at 88% battery. This is the same as my 3GS and the reason for upgrading to the 4S.

Dear friends at our big Apple,

Please can you place some information on your website just to let everyone know that you are working on this problem instead of 3rd party information from other websites? 3 key rules, communication, communication and communication. Thanks guys and girls!

According to the german newsgroup macuser.de, getting a replacement iPhone 4s usually fixes the problem. So it seems to be either a hardware problem or a software problem that only occurs with certain hardware components that have been built only into a certain batch of iPhones. Replacement phones that don't have the problems usually start with serial number "C3" (e.g. "C39GJ..."), my iPhone that has the problem with low standby time and "phantom usage" has a serial number that starts with "DNTG" and I'll have it replaced soon...

Don't put too much hope in that. I'm in Germany, have the Phantom usage problem (usually mac. 20 hrs standby while >10 hours of usage are displayed with me doing nearly nothing with the phone) and have a serial number starting with C39GG ...

Just to post my stats:  Did a DFU restore to 5.0.1 on 32GB 4S on Thursday night and set up as new phone.  In 1 hour I received one text but had usage of 40m and 60m standby and the battery down to 94% so something was running even with no apps installed nor email accounts setup.  This is how the 4S has behaved since I received it on launch day so 5.0.1 appeared to make no improvement, always showing usage as about 60% or standby even with the phone not in use.  I thought this could have been down to push on iCloud, but as it also showed this with no accounts setup, I'm inclined to not believe this.

Over night I charged it and setup my iCloud account using push and installed all my usual apps.  Suddenly over Friday, Saturday and Sunday the phone behaved correctly.  Usage dropped to about 6-7 mins per hour of standby and I'd be getting ~5 hours standby (and ~30 minutes usage) per 10% battery drop which is how my iP4 behaved and I thought it was fixed.

Sunday night I added back in my Exchange account for work (on 15 minute fetch) and the phantom usage was back yesterday to ~40 minutes in every hour all day yesterday hardly using the phone (half-dozen texts, a 20s phone call and maybe 10 emails).  So last night I deleted my Exchange account as I assumed this was causing the high usage and reset all settings on the phone.

But today I've sent and received about a dozen texts in total, no emails to my iCloud account and no phone calls and my phone is at 60min usage, 95 min standby and 93% remaining.

So over the weekend the phone worked as expected and now its back to phantom usage of 60% of standby time with the same setup as it had over the weekend when the phone worked as expected.

and my number also begins with C39 and i also have these battery issues...

Yes friend, exactly lolll. Each of these phones have something I like but none of them have it all. Plus none of them really last, unless you heavily tweak them or use them ever so lightly - and I've seen hands on here the worst masquerades in terms of usage statistics. Apple users are some of the worst in that department I have to say - no offence. I don’t understand why some users have to come here and play the usage contest and pretend they get days and days of usage when the Apple spec spells it out clearly - I put it on the account of worshipping and religious fairy tales. Another thing I can't understand is why people acknowledge the problem with IOS has many vectors yet as soon as they find a solution that improves their battery life it becomes THE solution that everyone should apply... that's so childish. But I digress. I've seen it all. I'm a support "artist". I came here to take the pulse of the Apple user base... and to have some laughs too I admit but I've also been quite helpful in many respects plus yes there are a few normal and intelligent people like you for instance. I learnt how to debug those pieces of lifestyle gadgetry. I’ve had enough now, after 250 pages of this. And mind you I wouldn't touch one with a ten yard pole. I don't mean the Iphone. I mean any smartphone. That's right. I don't use a G S2. I've just used this story I read about some sensible guy switching at the first sign of trouble - he’s probably over-tweaking his phone by now just like every anal-retentive smartphone user I know. As for Apple, they will surely iron it out down the road and all will be back to normal - maybe with a touch of humility and better support tools and some tweaks to factory settings etc. It's all good and I have no interest really - hope they make it happen for you guys' sake. I'm all about sustainability and consumers and education and such irrelevant ideas nowadays. I don't use smartphones because they're not on par with my dreams as you put it. That's one reason. Another one being that I find the data plans so expensive and I'm quite cheap. But the real reason is that I have no use for such devices... I can't find a single reason aside from lifestyle and cult. To me it’s mostly thrash aggregating devices. Why would I want any of that?

Because of Angry Birds? I'm afraid gaming means something entirely different to me. Facebook? Closed that a year ago, not coming back. In my life I have 5-10 real friends and that's it - couldn't care for acquaintances and such or their endless changing of their status to give importance to every insignificant detail of their tired existence. Plus I've realized FB is really about those girls you wanted to hit on in high school - I'm past that - had my share - no longer a virgin. And I really don't want to know what my real friends do or think on a regular basis - so when I meet them face to face we actually have something to say and feel quite comfortable meeting like human beings. People abroad? They can send a postcard and if they can't remember my birthday because I'm no longer on FB... well, I'm quite happy about that lolll . Twitter? My thoughts don't fit 140 characters and Charlie Sheen uses that. Mail? Mostly spam and I'm not typing such protracted comments on a touchscreen. We still use computers at the office and I use one of those. Clock? I wear a watch that works without any server sync. Text? never could use my thumbs nor figure out T9. Youtube? Don't care much for those Bieber videoclips nor do I care much for that speaking dog skit. Plus audio quality *****. Web? Maybe but where? When I should work at the office? When I drive? When I'm having a coffee with some friends and I have so little knowledge I can't remember what happened in 1939 so I need wiki pointers? But I'm quite happy others have smartphones because it makes for more interesting conversations and when I say words like "unconstitutional", "papaya", or "perestroika", they can tell them apart and google it and maybe even get a picture!!! Although I saw this friend of a friend searching the first word in youtube so I guess he thought it was an indie band or something. Getting directions? I know my city and the world I live in, I really like writing on paper maps and I can ask people for directions, even maybe ask this girl I find attractive - I can always say I don't have "maps" - and that beats talking to an AI girl any day of the week. Also I can tell a woman I like her  face to face - I don't need text messages - I’m a man. I saw this girl with an Ipad with some maps in the subway... she would zoom and unzoom this intersection, keeping the device open while waiting, Then once we got in she would zoom and unzoom again on the same spot. Was she hitting on me? I never want to be that clueless in life and I’m not dating someone like that. What about an mp3 player? Well, I've bought a asian player years ago for 100$ and it does what I want, plus it has a 4''3 resistive touchscreen and plays xvid and even hd content out of the box - I'm not re-encoding stuff - it even has radio!! I have a solid collection of uberstandardized vbr mp3s - I'm set for life and I'm not into indie. GPS? I’m never falling off a cliff in my car nor will be getting stuck on some mountain road because I’d trust that over common sense. But what about apps... well, I use Firefox, LibreOffice, K3B and a few others and that's it - it's free. I'm never paying for apps. Ever.  What about a camera? lollll I’m not into tiny optics... I prefer something like the Nikon F90 but most don’t have the muscle to hold that in their hands.  Cloud what? My data goes into flash memory and I don’t entrust mission critical data to internet hosting. Finally, there would be "calling" - well the Iphone is just an average device for calls really. But in truth, Iphone or other brand, I couldn't care less as I never have private conversations with anyone over the phone in public - strangers don't get to hear my blessed voice and they won’t get annoyed hearing all those intricate details of my glorious life. And when I go to a coffee-shop and sit at the table outside well... I drink coffee and look around (at girls) or read - I don’t sit with my hands on my device in between my legs. I have no leash and my boss can't reach me. If he ever insists I need a phone to stay in touch... I quit. You can tell I don’t use a smartphone because I have a straight back and my arms are more toned than my thumbs! What about my flip phone? Wait... I don’t even have a flip phone lollll. I am a fixed line user... with voicemail/call display... Panasonic... exceptional call quality!! I think different because I am different lollll. As in “human”

    Nice talking to you!

And the best of luck with your phone there!

i dont believe i have the standby usage drain in my 4s, i only suffer the usage excess drain, i drop % everytime i do something in the phone, like check facebook 2%, open safari for 1minute 1%, check email 1%, replying couple of texts the phone warms up 2%, just scrolling menu pages 1%, its normal it drains but just not as fast...

still i manage to get 2days and minimal usage. (everything off, except imessage and celular data).

yesterday my internet plafond ended and to not eat my rechargable sim money, i turned off celular data, now the battery seems to last forever, but i might have my 10year old nokia back, if it is just to make/receive calls and texts. no need for a fancy 4s.

at this point i just gave up, i dont have standby drain, just usage excess drain and that will never be fixed, that is the high price we must pay for having a 4s.

btw my 4s serial starts whit C37GH... no phantom usage ios 5.0

I've restored 3 time now (one time I did a back to back to try and purge the bad code and get a good copy). I had a random shut down but when I got up this morning I was pleasently surprised that my phone was still on and had a charge! I still wary and keeping an eye on it.
