Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

No good news to report here ( Ireland Dublin) -

have followed  drStrangeP0rk instructions ( with thanks ) but even with a vannila install of 5.0.1 ( no apps) I am still loosing ~6% an hour on standby.

Not sure on next steps to be honest, return and try another phone?

One point to note - on my Setting >General > Usage screen when I did a restore the option on the bottom changed from "Mobile Usage" to "Cellular Usage".

Am on my way to pick up a replacement iphone tomorrow (I am lucky because I have Applecare).  The recent update did nothing for my phone, and it is possible that we are now down to rogue batteries.  I am sure this will be sorted by Apple very soon.

ok i have tried everything that has ever been posted on this thread. Nothing much makes any difference to my battery life. I have also had a new 4s given to me at the apple store to see if it was hardware. Both phones have been the same in terms of very much shorter than advertised standby times

For me its the 3G thats killing my battery, my phone's battery is like an egg timer on 3G on wifi its back to what my trusty iphone 4 was.

im on vodafone in the uk - 3G is what's killing my battery!! I need to be able to disable this like i could on my iphone 4

Regarding 3G problems, I made some observations I'd like to share. What I did was:

    - took out the SIM from the phone: phantom usage and battery drain nearly gone (as expected)

    - switched to flight mode: similar behaviour (expected this as well)

    - put a different SIM (a MultiSIM configured for the same phone number as the first one, formerly placed in my iPad 2) in the iPhone - and voila: phantom usage was reduced from around 60% of standby time to 25-30%!

Right now, I have a standby time of 1:30h and a usage (mainly still phantom usage, but much less than before) of 25 min. Battery is on 98%. Extrapolating from these values, I could hope for 75 hours of standby - which would be more I ever got with my 3GS.

I am having exactly the same problems. Got a new O2 Germany sim for the iPhone 4s and had battery problems due to phantom usage from day one, iOS 5.0.1 changed nothing...

For me (SFR in France) i have tried a lot of settings and reinstalls

to solve the phantom usage problem  without any good result.

The miracle went then i started using the new SIM card  my

ISP sent to me. Suddenly, no more phantom usage while

phone is doing nothing. I can't explain but please believe me.

Last week i was using my usual sim card comming from my Iphone4

on wich yet  it was working fine.

I don't know why the IP4S works fine only with my new SIM.

    APPLE should know why...

Unfortunatly , i can't prove that using back the 'old SIM'

brings the problem back because when the new one has been

activacted, the old one has been deactivated at the same time.

Also tried everything from hard to soft reset to recovery to trying to switch of different settings, but nothing worked. Yesterday evening I did a recovery from iTunes, charged the iPhone to 100%, unplugged it and put it on standby the whole night. This morning after about eight hours the battery was down to 60% and I had more than 6 hours of phantom usage...

The only thing that has worked for me is to put the phone into flight mode, then I only loose 1-2% per night. But this is of course not really a viable option...

This means, that during flight modus some services, which are causing the battery problem, are stopped during fliht modus. It might be the combination between the new mobile chipset and the management between the new chipset and iOS 5.0.1! Hopefully it should be software-related-problem.

As described in another posting I do not have any problem with my battery life at home, where the reception of all signals are always good and do not range between bad and good.

The IOS 5.0.1 seemed to work fine at first, and now, two days in a row, when the battery drains down to about 42%, it just drops off altogether immediately!!  No app is left running that would create such an instantaneous drain from 42% to 0% in a matter of minutes, so I have NO idea of what is going on...

In 3G my battery drain faster than 1% per minute. It's terrific!!!!!

If Apple don't fix I take back it and buy a Samsung. I'm sure that there are some hardware problems

Glad to see someone having same good results than me

only when using a different SIM card.

Just an update. Sometime earlier I posted about my usage. .  I had left my phone unplugged over night phone went from 30 percent at around 1 am and by 9:00 am my battery was at 24 percent. Lost 6 percentile over the night of approx 8 hours..  Screen has been consistently on now for 6 minutes and the pone has consumed another 2 percent. IMO not as good as my iPhone 4, but this update for me worked.

    What I did:

    Upgraded to 5.0.1.

Restored as a new phone and did not use back up

    Full hard reboot

    Charge

My standby issue is not an issue for me, but usage has gone out the window.

hello my iphone 4s has something strange, i have most features off due to the battery drain, now i only can make/receive calls and text messages, but even that i am not sure if i can

yesterday i found quite strange, not 1 single call or text message during the afternoon and evening, checked the phone several times, full network signal, no problem, then someone called me to my home

phone and told me  that  was trying all day to reach me and got nothing than voicemail.

    ????????

turned off iphone, turned on again and avalanche of texts and missed calls warnings by text messages, the phone was turned on, what is happening here? i sacrifice features for battery and now not even calls and text messages i can receive, how do i know my phone is ok? it shows normal appearance whit strong network signal oh well, i miss my iphone 4

    this are my settings:

    ios 5.0

    BT:off

    wifi:off

    location:off

    icloud: off

    siri: off

    notifications: only text,calls

imessage:on if i turn off cant receive normal sms

    facetime:on

    what is causing this???

I'm another one who has no real drain problems when the phone is on standby (1-2% an hour usually) but severe problems when doing anything that requires the screen to be on. Browsing on 3G or Wifi I lose 1% every 2 mins. Same for calls, imessaging, anything really. Music playback when screen is off only uses 1% every 30 mins or so. VERY frustrating. This is my second 4S. Had exactly same problems with the first. Neither were set up from backups as never had an iphone before 4S! Sort it out Apple!!!

I have an appointment at the genius bar today.  I'm not leaving without a new phone.  This is ridiculous.  I drained the batttery last night to 10%, turned all the usual stuff off, closed the apps, etc., turned the phone OFF, went to bed when it was 100% and woke up to 90%!  Huh?  This is ridiculous.  Prior to the latest update, the "fix", my battery was fine.

All I can say is that I'm glad I'm within 30 days of purchase and that there is an apple store two miles away.  I'll post results later this evening.

Well, I had some luck yesterday it seems.  I now have 16 hours on standby and 91% left.   If the battery drain is linear, then I should get 160 hours of standby.  Not the 200 they claim, but better than before.

    Here is what I did.

    Location Services>System Services>Setting Time Zone - Off

    Deleted Contacts and reloaded

iCloud Photo Stream & Documents& Data - Off (Everything else on)

Restore iPhone from a backup I made after I deleted the reloaded the contacts.

However, I had good battery life before and it randomy went bad with no changes except for iCloud being turned on. But I turned it off and the battery still drained quickly. I am curious.

HOW MANY HERE WITH BATTERY PROBLEMS HAVE iCLOUD ON?  Or turned it on and then off?
