Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

Hi to everyone who have the same problem that i had, I found out a way.. I plug my iPhone4s into my Mac and click restore it, and then wait for it to download a new iOS5.0.1 for 800++MB file and install it.. And it WORK! Before i done that it go down from fully to 85% in just one hour in standby mode.. But now It just only drop to 99% in 70mins

How long did this take for you?

I did this as well and I also noticed a significant improvement in standby.  The time to restore depends on which phone you have and how much you have stored on it.  I have a 64GB 4s with 23GB of music on it.  It took a very long time to restore - I want to say over an hour (downloading, erasing, re-installing the iOS and then restoring from backup).

Yes, this also worked for me. Restore the phone in iTunes as a NEW iPhone. Once charged to 100% fully drain the battery (before you recharge it).

Quick question...if I restore as described, do all my apps, music, etc disappear?

That is exactly what happened to me. Battery life was very questionable at first, but I let it drain to absolute zero, and turned off the time zone location support. Since then I can go two days without needing to recharge, and I use my phone rather extensively.

Oh, I didn't restore it as a NEW iPhone, I just restored it from backup.  How has your usage life been?  Do you feel you can do more with it?  I had standby time significantly increased, but usage life still kind of ***** - though not as bad.

Well before I handed my new 1 week old iPhone 4s back and got a replacement cos of some hardware faults, I had restored it 3 times the 3rd time I did it I did not synch so I had no music no apps, just contacts, I had most if not all functions off and it seemed to help.

New phone I did the update, restored it charged added my music and apps etc, I have everything turned off ( its not smart at the moment) I have made a 17min call sent and received about 10 texts since 5:50am until 5:50pm at it was about 70% I then  played a game for 3 mins(timed) checked email for 2mins( timed) and turned everything off, when to 67% then from about 7pm- till now 9:15pm its just been sat doing nothing as, and it is not 63%.

Now I think its better then it was with old phone, but I still think this is poor, I have everyting off and I have hardly used it.

I do think it has an issue when you add apps to it, I also think the battery indicator is a little faulty, but I think the big issue is the trying to grab on to 3G signal not mobile Internet signal!! if you have poor 3G in your area like me it will keep trying to find it and that drains battery.

I know this because when I had the HTC I had same issue then I could change the settings for the 3G and it worked a bit. But the android smart phones are not much better when it comes to battery life

SO yes I do think there are some bugs, but I also think that it can be ironed out, try restoring your phone 3 times and not adding apps, just contacts and music, turn most things on and you will see a little improvement maybe. Apple do need to address this because as it stands I will never get 200/300h standby as they state.

May I add. I unplugged the phone at 11.10 am. Now its 10:20 PM, and I have 23% left, after...let's say a few phone calls, an hour of 3gsurfing and some games... please answer me!

Yes.  When you restore it wipes the phone and only the apps that came with the phone will be on it.  You will then have two choices: to leave it as a NEW iPhone and manually reinstall your apps, folders and music or to restore it from backup. If you restore from a backup, it will put everything back where it was.

I might have found out another thing that is draining the battery that might not have been mentioned before. There is a problem with the dual antennae (read about it on some thread), that keeps making the cellular connection crash when making operations such as texting or making phone calls or just randomly. This is not obvious, as the signal bars remain the way they were before. Therefore, this makes the phone strive to gain signal while on standby (hence, draining about 10% battery overnight, about over 6 hrs to be precise). Disabling the sim-pin might fix this cellular connection problem and therefore will keep the phone from constantly searching for a network while on standby.

Yeah, I'm having a fair amount of errors with cellular connection as well as simple 3G data stuff i.e. using the Facebook app, Safari, etc...

I'm beyond frustrated...I am an Apple fan and want to be completely happy with it compared to my old Android device in the battery life category, but so far, not happening...

I'm happy. I restored the phone Sunday night and wanted to fully drain the battery today (so I could do the first full rechage) and had to leave music playing this afternoon to drain it fully.

I just thought of something... when I'm at home, my battery is actually okay. When I'm on my university campus that my battery goes nuts.

And every other day iTunes will display an alert on my Macbook that says "Unable to locate iPhone" or something like that.

Is this a problem with the iPhone constantly looking for the iTunes that it's wirelessly synced to?

No it is not, the phone only sync's when your'e charging and iTunes is open or you manually force sync from the phone. What you may be seeing is that you don't have wifi set on or correct settings for it to see your'e phone when at home.

When iTunes is open on your Mac, it will look for your'e phone just to link to it.

The issue on campus most likely is signal and wifi searching constantlly. When away from home, turn wifi off. Unless you are setup for free campus wifi, which I would switch on only when using. Wifi signal will very alot on campus between wifi repeaters. This will cause the wifi portion of the phone to increase reveiver power.

Dumb question for everyone who is having the worst of the battery draining problems:

Did you activate the NEW SIM that came with the iPhone, or did you swap in an existing SIM???

What is your experience about that ?

In my side, i had activated the NEW SIM only Yesterday

and Now things are MUCH BETTER than  before when i was

using my existing SIM comming from my IP4..

Specially, usage time is no longer growing when phone

    is doing nothing at all.

Yeah, ya know darobman, you're right... because people can fix a iOS or hardware related issue when they have no direct access to the iOS or hardware.

Hey, while you're at it, can you fix my car without having access to it or ever seeing it?

And like 50000 pages of posts on here is going to make Apple move any quicker on it than they already are.

yeah, they should just put out an update and screw up some more things, sounds like a plan, huh?

Give me a break, get over yourself.

    <end sarcasm>
