Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

    I've solved my battery life issues. Here's what I did;

    1. Turn phone completely off.

    2. Put phone in pocket.

    Fixed it right away

What I did is set up my phone as a new one. Then manually downloaded all my apps again from the App Store instead of restoring it. Sounds like a pain in the ***, but you will notice it goes a lot faster then you think.

I unplugged my phone at 6am this morning. Its now 14 hours later, and I still have 47% left.

LAST IMPORTANT THING: Do not ask me why, but my battery life got better after a couple of charges. Like it needed to be broken in or something. I honestly feel that you also can get TOO FOCUSSED on the battery life which will actually make you think there is a major problem. Of course I am not talking about all you people who lose 50% in like three hours, because that's when something is really wrong...

    Good luck to everybody!!!

Is losing 5-6% per hour with checking email maybe six times reasonable?   I'm really fristrates since the .1 release.  I had such great battery life before.  Ive tried everything including draining and restoring as new and nothing works!  Why is apple not responding?  If I go to droid I will never get another iPhone.

Can your verify, what does " fristrates " mean ?

It may be helpful to use a Apple site specific to your local, there are many options to choose from. http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57

You may also want to review your settings on your PC to determine if there is a system wide spell checker that may help.

    Good Luck and Thanks

You know what i think? Well, you probably dont care ... or act as if you dont care, ... anyway, i think you sound like a geek trying to be an Amish.

Sometimes in life, its either you're in or you're out. There is no place to be in between or on the fence.

For me, I am just glad to be part of the digital evolution of our age. I live from using typewriters to word processors, to mobile computing, to the dawn of AI.

From listening to LP records, to cassette tapes, to CDs, to mp3, to the dawn of cloud music.

From accounting machines, to Lotus 123 spreadsheets, to database accounting enterprise softwares, to cloud base package.

From caburetor engine of the original vw beetle with quirky stick shift, to electronic fuel injection engines with torque converter automatics, to variable valve timing direct injection common rail piezo injection engines with dual clutch automatics, to hybrids and EVs next.

From getting news from the papers, radios and TVs, to getting news on 56k connected Netscape, to getting it at our finger tips at anytime.

From digesting news based on certain journalist's bias opinion and presentation (in whatever format or media), to crowdsourced information and video from the general public and form your own ideas and news and share it in your blog or social network.

From pulse dialing fixed liners, to quick tone dialers, to Motorola Startacs, to Nokia GSMs, to 3G semi smart Symbians and BBs, to where we are now.

Its an evolution of technological progress i dont think my grand father, or great grand father ever saw. I am fortunate enough to see all these in my life time. Embracing it will only move you forward. Resisting it and you will be left behind in your own world.

Fair enough and quite poetic, if somewhat delusional, with respect. As history often shows, progress is not linear and there are many setbacks along the road - regression is not something that one can easily predict. It happened before, it will happen again though. Furthermore, the delusion comes from the idea that this is something "big" compared to what your ancestors saw - yet you lack the detachment and perspective to make a judgment on this - and so do I. But people always think they're in the "most important of eras". Form vs. content is arguably a better way to parse those events - and content is seriously lacking nowadays. Watching a movie like "Soylent Green" will serve as a good metaphor for what I mean lolll - i.e. the content is made "out of" the user base - it's noise at best. And nothing of it will remain when they decide to clear to servers to secure more free space. Opposing the embracing of all this to the resisting of it reeks of what I would call technological fascism, yet I do not think you meant it as such. Technology doesn't unite the world, it only polarizes it further. I don't oppose progress, I question its impacts and the choices that are often being made for us - and they're rarely empowering. Thinking different and making a choice instead of following the crowd can be empowering. Life is all about nuances. There are many people in my world who use technology yet reject many of its contentless elements, like social networks for instance. I am not alone. So in the end I disagree with you, but indeed I care, and if I were an Amish I wouldn't be posting any of this clearly But that was quite interesting and I respect your opinion. Thank you!

iPhone 4S battery is terrible.  I've had it four days now and I'm shocked at how fast the battery drains.  My over one-year old iPhone 4 held a longer charge.

Also I noticed the iPhone 4S gets REALLY hot when charging, and that wasn't something I ever experienced with the 4.  Anyone else notice how hot it gets?

I am not sure we live in the most important era in history. Maybe not yet, maybe soon. I dont know. An era spans at least 2-3 generations. Each generation 40 years. I am not sure if this is the era.

You are right in certain ways. I am not sure if techonolgy is good or bad for the world. But it certainly improves our quality of life (to a certain extent). Imagine a life without electricity, or clean water, or soap, or modern day transportation, or cooking appliances, or internet, or radio. But thanks for the alternative opinion.

Email me if you do not wish to make this interesting discussion public and irrelevant off topic discussion (even tho Apple could well afford it). You know where to find me.

Look up Ray Kurzweil and Singularity, it's along the same lines of what you mentioned.

    Yes - read the specs.

Even when the battery issues are tamed, the specifications show the 4S has a shorter specified battery life ("up to 200 hours") than the 3GS or 4 ("up to 300 hours.")

Thanks for sharing Kurzweil's work. Its certainly is very interesting.

As for 4S battery life. Try doing this,

    1. Settings>Location Service ... disable all location services you do not need. In particularly Facebook because it drains the battery a lot.

Scroll down to the bottom at Settings>Location services>System Services ... Disable Setting Time zone, location based iAds, Diagnostic & Usage.

    2. Settings>Notification>Calendar ... turn off the Notification Centre.

    3. Settings>General>Reset ... do Reset All Settings. Doing this will not wipe out your iPhone. It will just Reset the network settings, location warning, keyboard dictionary, etc... but it will clear up some corrupted data there. Generally this will help.

Try these 3 steps first... if it still drains a lot, try the following,

    4. Drain your battery down to 1%. Then charge it up using USB from PC ... not the charger. The charger output 1.0 A ( x 5V from USB ... you get 5W power). From PC, output is only 0.5A x 5V = 2.5W power. Charging is slower but trickle charge 4S helps the battery retain its charge better. I think it takes about 3-3.5 hours to charge full from USB/PC compared to slightly below 2 hours using iPhone charger.

If after doing the above still could not solve your battery issues (mine with iOS 5.0 was ok up to step 4, but not iOS 5.0.1).... plug you iPhone to a charger (any charger), from iPhone, access your iCloud ... set it up if you havent. Back up your iPhone data to iCloud. if you do not have enough storage (only 5GB is free), go to details and select the apps you need its data backup, choose only those you really need and leave those unnecessary ones out. Back up your camera roll to your PC/Mac manually as it could be too big to backup to iCloud.... once you have it setup, make sure you are on Wifi ...  tap backup to iCloud from your iPhone. It will take a while if the file is huge.

Once backup to iCloud is completed, plug your iPhone to PC/Mac and launch iTunes 10.5.1 (make sure you have 10.5.1)

Click Restore. It will automatically initiate a download of iOS 5.0.1 ipsw for iPhone 4S. Wait for the whole process to finish, ie. download, restore software/firmware.

Once its done, do not set up your iPhone from iTunes. Set it up on your iPhone. Go through the selection. When prompted, select restore from iCloud (from your iphone backup earlier). Keep your iphone plugged into iTunes while restoring backup from iCloud. Because while restoring from iClouds, some data will be synced from iTunes if you plug in, e.g. music, video, etc... unless you bought these content from iTunes store. Apps will be downloaded from App Store from the cloud.

Once it's all done restored. Turn off your iPhone,.. and turn it on again.

Now, hopefully your battery wont be draining so fast anymore. Usually it wont after this. But you need to charge your battery at least 4-5 cycles to stabilize the charge on the battery. I dont know why... but battery life seems to get better and better for me after a few charge cycles after all the above work.

Good luck. Let us know if it works for you.

    Post No.2 from my side.

After a acouple of tests with on/off adjustments the draining was still visible (35% overnight in standby). For me and for my Wife (both iPhones 4s, 32 GB SIM-s are activated).

I have noticed in the diagnostics information/logs are a couple of errors logs. Some of them were connected with the iCloud disconnections (awwd?), some of them to the hardreset I’ve made. One log was connected to the battery: “LowBatteryLog”.

CrashKey: d62fad761a2f9ebd771c29c1ea96da9fe546a323 (someone knows what this mean?)

These steps I’m describing below I have made for both our phones.

On 14.11.2011(17 o’clock) I’ve made the general restore from iTunes (800 MB) again and erased all apps and contacts.

After thesoftware installation, during the phone activation I set up to off:

    location services,

    iCloud,

    sending of logs,

the calendar messages and game center messages,

    cellular data

    and bluetooth,

    I don’tconfigure my e-mail account yet.

TheWi-Fi I have started during the set-up pocedure but for charging I have put itoff. Then I’ve charged the battery overnight (with the charger and not via PC). In themorning I have disconnected the phone (5:30 o’clock (15.11.2011)). On the iPhone are no apps, no contacts there are really the factory settings only.

Additional I am checking the status of errors frequently. Until now no errors noticed.

    Statusof the phone, 16.11.2011 6:30 o’clock:

    Usage: 40Minutes,

    Standby:25 hours,

    battery level 88%.

It is really amazing. (Loose approx. 0,5% per hour). With such battery life I can live!

Now I want to start to save some contacts. Then I will proceed step by step with installing the apps separately and using phone and I will observe general the phone behavior and error logs.

For all whos have a battery problem: could you check please the error logs? Do you have there any errors connected to the battery? (LowBatteryLog?) How many eerors do you have inside? Is here a person with an iPhone without error logs but with the battery problem?

    Regards,

    chris

    Or why 20 + 0 > 13870 lolllll.

At last a trend may emerge. One can most likely infer the following:

1- The 5.0.1 delta cannot sanitize 5.0; only the full rebased 800mb release seem to do the job

2- A pre-5.0 restore cannot be trusted on 5.0-5.0.1 unless it's been sanitized by restoring to then from using 5.0-5.0.1

So there's many levels of screwing up in there lolllll.

    Good luck!
