Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

NO it is not our problem. a very pricey phone that work half is possibility.

WHY DISABLE 4 to 7 items (features) that whe paid for that smart phone.

DISABLE (TURN OFF) all features = ordinary non smart phone.

i am in Canada :just 7 days return and 30 minutes on (phone calls ) !!!!!!!!!!!!! too late for me aand i do not

    have SIRI ON IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GLAD a buy  the APPLE CARE PLAN

return the iphone4s to get the same!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and paid shipping? no APPLE STORE ......have to go 50 milles.

I WILL WAIT for a suppose update of OS5 for the battery management.........

if no update..........i will return it..not now........but in 1 or 2 months :maybe a new batch and a better battery.

that iphone 4s (i read) as a 50 mah + than the iphone 4.....a joke or what. not sure if information is good.

WHY they do not test it more before release
?????????????? they should know that they will be millions

(over the world) with that device and having problem.

maybe they guess that whe would not all be frustrated.  or maybe that APPLE IPHONE4S will be like that.

period. nothing to do about it.

it will cost milions of $ to have all iphone 4S back or they will do another OS with less features.

or the new chip processor is too fast (and the graphic processor too) AND BATTERY SUFFER.

HAVE A GOOD DAY ALL, MODS AND CLIENT MEMBER.

I've been getting acceptable battery life on mine. If I take it off the charger at night, the battery is at 99 or 100 percent in the morning when I wake the phone up. This is my first iPhone, so the initial setup didn't install any previous phone settings, although apps I previously purchased for my iPad and iPod were installed. I have location services off except for a few apps and location services are off for all system functions. Ping is off and no diagnostic reports are sent to Apple. Here's the usage I got until the battery dropped to one percent:

That is very strange...  My wife and I are new to the iPhone and when we were testing out Facetime we didn't have a drop like that...

On the note of your other post, there are several others including myself that have observed that our battery life is much better at home (when we have a steady wifi connection) even under heavy use.

I believe this problem (for most people at least) is caused by the phone constantly trying to connect to different wifi connections when it doesn't already have a steady connection.  The problem may be worse when you are making a call and all of your "radios" in your phone are running at once.

I seemed to have solved my problem with turning off "Ask to Join Networks" but others seem to have success resetting Network Settings and disabling ping.  Turning off "Ask to Join Networks" seems to stop the phone from constantly searching for another wifi network.

In a way, these are different flavors of the same solution.  It would be worth trying pemarsh's solution a couple posts up and if that doesn't work then try mine.

You might be surprised with the results.

I have turned off the join other networks but also when I made my calls I was at home still on the wifi! I may go and ask for a new sim card tomorrow. I have spoken to my provider who is t mobile in the uk and they said a new sim wouldn't make any difference. I have also reset all my network connections, deleted everything, reset up the phone in every way described on this thread. Maybe it's just a bad unit. At least I can go to the genius bar tomorow and see what wonderful words of wisdom they can offer!

Today has proven to me though that the phone calls are the main culprit of my problem - but I do think that making calls is the whole point of having a phone!

One last thought while I have been typing this - I bought a case in the apple store for this phone which obviously also fits an iPhone 4 - with the 4s having two antennas - could the case be affecting them?

I am not sure that an iPhone 4 case would cause additional problems with the iPhone 4s than it would on an iPhone 4... The 4s should have a little bit better reception regardless... But, does the case have any metal on it does it?  There is always a chance that a case is interfering with the signal but if it has any metal on it it would possibly cause additional interference (which would cause problems with battery life).

Okay I had the same problem on my iPhone 4 S. My battery drained very quickly, I found a solution to this on another forum site which was very affective for me and has solved my battery issues. Also people have had the same problem when they've downloaded OS5 on an iPhone 4. So you may want to try this if you've got an iPhone 4 that now has battery issues. Don't know how it worked but it did for me. Here's what to do:-

You need to delete your email accounts. Go to, SETTINGS>MAIL, CONTACTS, CALENDARS> (touch the email account you wish to delete) DELETE ACCOUNT. (repeat for all accounts) . Reset your iPhone (holding down both home and lock buttons). Start your phone back up and re-add your email accounts.

Hope this works for you. :)

No the case is plastic - it was a thought in desperation!

It would actually be worth trying to take the case off... If it is causing the phone to hold excessive heat this would make your phone work less efficiently and use more battery.

A good way to test this theory is to use the phone for awhile and feel the case. Is it hot?

Now, take the case off the phone after having used it for awhile.  Is the phone hot?

If the heat doesn't seem to be transferring through the case, it means it is insulating the phone.  I doubt that this would "solve" the problem but it may help it noticeably.

Send it back! I did and upon getting the new phone in 24 hours sent from stateside after talking, texting, playing real racing 2 for and hour and watching Avatar start to finish I was finally able to take my battery to zero at 1000 P.M. last night. I turned my phone on at 800 A.M. I did my restore from the cloud and thats about it!

    I love this phone now!

Fyi, the other potential issue with cases is that they can be made out of black plastic - which could possibly be made with carbon plastic or dyed with metallic particles... In affect, a case like this would act like a Faraday Cage (look it up on Wikipedia).  A poorly designed case could affect battery life in this way.

I have noticed the battery life of my iPhone 4s was not quite as good as my iPhone 4. However, when I restored from the latest backup the battery life really went down hill, dropping over 20 percent an hour! I have my phone connected to an exchange server. I happened to open the mail application and noticed the little spinny wheel next to the clock constantly spinning. My phone was stuck in a sync loop. I deleted the entire mail account and re-added it. Problem solved, my battery is no longer dropping 20 percent every hour with no use.

However it is still not as good as the iPhone 4. On an average day with moderate phone usage and heavy email, I would end up with 50-60 percent at the end of the day, with the iPhone 4s I am usually charging on my drive home as the phone is 30 percent or lower.

This was a lucky find. I actually had this happen one other time on my 3GS. Please respond and let me know if this helped at all.

I have heard of people doing a restore and that helping there problem, but if you restore items from a backup it also restores the changes in settings (which may have been causing the issues in the first place).

I am curious about the email thing though... It has been mentioned by several people in different capacities...  Is it in the actual Mail app itself that you are seeing the spinny wheel?  This wheel always spins when you open up the app, but it was continually spinning as long as the app was running?  Maybe is this an issue because people aren't inputing their emails, but instead having them instantly loaded on their phone from the cloud?

Just some thoughts, I am in an electronics degree program and I find it satisfying to come on here and try to help people out.  Maybe with some of the questions I asked - we will be able to at least partially address this issue.

Just to add to this theory I restored my phone yesterday. Did not use a back up. Input my emails as fresh accounts. I have four of them set up now and they are set to PUSH every 15 minutes as this is the same at I've had my email on all iPTs and my 4.

My battery doesn't drain that fast when it's asleep. But the minute I start doing anything it drains very quickly. Went down about 5% in the last ten minutes of only reading emails, checking the notifications, and using Safari.

I have turned just about everything off (Siri, all location, all notification except txts etc.), have done the full discharge/recharge, closed all apps, turned off ping, turned off the time zone thing and basically have done everything I have read about on the forums. I go to bed with it at 100% and 6 hours later I wake up and it's at 47%. I wish the battery life was as good as my 3GS!! Oh, and this is also with wifi use (not 3G). I sure hope Apple solves this problem soon!

I asked when I was in Apple Store about this and they said it was to do with location services and the reminders and that it keeps checking when you are in the geofence area or leaving it to then remind you.

He said that Apple are looking into this and will release a fix for it as soon as possible. Hope this fixes it as mine is drained so much.
