Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

Men, I solved all my battery problems. As I said in a previous post in this topic, my iPhone was draining the battery even if the phone was in standby. Changing the SIM solved my problems. You can find the full story (I've also received calls from an Apple's team!) in a post that I just published in my blog.

I hope this can solve the problem for at least some of you.

Hello Nicolo, i am Roger from France.

i read carrefully your post and also your "full story".

Exept than i was never called by Appe engineer, my story about

the SIM card is exectly the same. I was using my old SIM  i cutted

to make it a micro SIM last year and use it in my IP4.

When i got the IP4S, i had transferred the old sim card.

and  despite of many settings and IOS5 reinstalls, nothing

    really improved.

The miracle went 4 days ago now when i decide to try

to activate and use the NEW SIM my provider supplied

whith my 4S. Now all seems OK.

We are now at least 3 users reporting here having solved

the problem trought the use of a new sim card.

This is a crowd sourcing fourm to help users, seems to have only iOS bug issues posted which totals two. Profile is that link to a PHD Student In Switzland. Interesting read.

Not sure if there are many APPLE users, considering that there are only two post. Seems like he just started this on Nov 14.

The research links individual are interesting and I wish him the best of luck in make software more stable and secure.

    Thanks and good luck.

On 11-17-11 my phone battery was working great even since before ios update.  However on 11-18-11 at approx 530am I took my phone of the charger and by 1pm it was DEAD. This is the first time since I''ve purchased the phone since its done this. The call and data usage was normal as other day's. One thing i noticed was my phone would stay warm n from time to time it would get pretty hot. Now 11-19-11 at 830 am im at half bar. NOT COOL MAN!

Confused by your image, you have a phone with 5 gigs of RAM, what model are you using?

Just so we can be sure of the device for users who may have the same problem.

    Best of Luck and Thanks.

This has been reported to work for users who cut their SIM Cards, I always never unstood why someone would cut down an old card.

Whenever you update your phone, I think a good practice is to get a new SIM, today you can transfer contacts a data a host of ways.

    Best of luck and thanks.

Thanks, after a while they all look the same. Have to improve my reading...

Did you alter your sim card at any time? Some users have altered their sim cards by cutting them. Using a new SIM has worked.

I tend to destroy our old sim's so this is not an issue for us.

I am sure that you did do all the resets, it is odd since that has worked well for users.

    Thanks and Best of Luck.

so , let me try to  help you to understand why some users had cut down

    their SIM card:

Just because 18 months ago, i got my Iphone4

without sim card. due to the change

in format (micro sim) some providers was not able

to supply micro sim at the same time than the phone.

It"s the reason why at this time some special cutters

was on sale on the net.So i bought one and i did it

all has been working fine in my IP4 for months until

    now ....on my IP4S

So the device has been altered from it's original intent and users are asking why they are having problems.

Most devices use media and peripherals which include the power cord, these are specific to the device. If you put altered media, hardware or software on your phone you as the user  accept the risk that it will not work or perform as expected. You would not cut a DVD down? The cost of the DVD is pennies. The cost of a SIM is pennies..

I would suggest that you transfer your data using other means and use the SIM card recommenced for the phone. Altering it an any way could be in violation of the warranty. Most providers will send you a new SIM overnight. Why would you risk putting an altered piece of media into your phone? Especially one that is high end, it is like putting vegetable oil in a Ferrari. If you can afford the Ferrari, buy the gas.

If you are using altered media such as a cut SIM card in a iPhone and the battery did not reset you may want to use the recommended media. Using altered media creates risk and the device may not perform as expected. More importantly it will void any warranties.

There is very little less to say...

Try the resets on non-altered phones.

DO NOT USE ALTERED MEDIA, USE THE RECOMMEND  SIM from the MANUFACTURER.

    Thanks and best of luck.

I SOLVED MY BATTERY ISSUES - SIMPLE FIX

Delete all of your push email accounts, including iCloud, and re-add. This has completely solved my battery draining issues under 5.0.1. When I used to have about 30-50% battery at the end of a typical work day, I now have 70%-80%. The improvement has been quite dramatic. There appears to be a bug in the push email settings that causes unusually high network activity even while asleep. Deleting and re-adding your email accounts, or restoring as new, will clear this error and get you back to normal battery life.

I now see no discernable difference between my iPhone 4S' battery life compared with the iPhone 4 it replaced. Happy camper here!

New iPhone 4s, 64Gb, black, unlocked but on O2 PAYG (in UK)

    S/No. starts C39GK3B2, iOS5

Collected my very first iPhone last Saturday 12-Nov-2011 with iOS 5 pre-installed.

    Brand-new micro-SIM from O2 shop in Meadowhall.

Initial battery drain whilst using the device horrified me.  Not quite seeing the percentage drop minute by minute, but drops 4% in 15 mins or so.

After getting to under 20%, I fully charged the phone over a few hours, then turned everything off to see what standby time was.  Initially very encouraging (for an iPhone).  Looking like 150+ hours standby with everything turned off.

After looking on this forum, decided NOT to apply iOS update to 5.0.1.

All email/data/apps downloaded via home WiFi network.

    Settings:

    Bluetooth OFF

    POP email OFF

    iCloud OFF (not activated)

    Notifications OFF

    Location Services OFF

    Siri ON,  Siri w/lift OFF

    NO Exchange email

NO apps running (that I can tell)

Brightness approx 50% - auto OFF

    Auto time-zone OFF

    3G Data OFF

3-4 bars 3G cell 98% of the time (no cell hunting)

2-3 bars WiFi 98% of the time (no wifi hunting)

    Usage statistics are:

Usage 11h 36m (don't understand this as it hasn't had this much use??)

    Standby 4days 17h

After getting to 20% I did some YouTube etc to finish off the battery and it dropped some 3-4% in 15 mins as reported above.  Let the battery drain all the way down 'till phone shut off and followed this by a slow charge via USB over 3hr 25min and a reset/set-up as new phone.

Will add an update to this thread after I have seen if reset/set-up as new phone makes any difference to plummeting battery life whilst in use.

100% charge as I post this 4:10pm Saturday 19th November 2011.  Let's see what happens now.

    Cheers

    RB

Just to add my story here:

I have purchased my iphone 4 last year from an offical reatiler and at the same type REPLACED MY SIM with a micro SIM (3FF I think is their code-name) and had no prblems with my iphone 4 for over a year.

Last week I have decided to buy the new iphone 4S. My only reason for that is that I was heavily affected by the so called "antenna-gate" and decided to get the 4S to solve this problems. I installed my micro SIM but the reasult is not as described above, my battery is drainded faster than eye can see, so I do not believe that the whole issue is a matter of SIM. Except of course if there are new micro SIM with improved specifications for lower power consuption but I honestly believe that this is not the case.

My best guess is that Apple, as usuall, needs additional publicity ("any publicity is good publicity") and with thiw battery drain issue hold even more attention than needed. I just HOPE that this fix is only software issue and not Hardware.
