Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

I've been following the discussion for a while, so I went to apple armed with some of this information.. He told me that all the batteries don't come from one company or distributor, they come from two.. Point being I could have a totally different battery in my iPhone than you in yours, that's probably why iOS 5 0 1 didn't work for a lot of people including myself. So I had apple replace the phone, hoping I would get a "good battery", and it's not as bad as it was on the previous phone, but not what it should be..

This is ridiculous by apple, how long have they been making phones now and how many phones have they rolled out and they still F**k up with their latest phone

I mean these things arent cheap, you fork out all this money for a piece of crap

I got my first iphone about 2 weeks ago, an iphone 4s,  battery is ****, updated to IOS 5.01 and that made it worse

an example, went to bed last night, turned off bluetooth. wi fi, cellular data, location services, shut down all the apps , screen locked

was at 41 % when I went to bed, woke up 8 hours later and was at 20 %   sure thats useless, phone was doing absoloutly nothing and it drained 21%  in 8 hours !!!

ridiculous, Apple, sort your sh1t out

yee have way too much money earned over the last few years and you should be able to pump people and resources in to fixing your issues, engineers should be working around the clock to fix this issue

very dissapointing , wont buy apple again and woudl encourage others not to buy !!!

For anyone new to the thread be sure to go through these steps to address the battery after updating to iOS 5.0.1:

    1. Reset all settings (settings app-> general-> reset)

    2. Go through initial setup steps (lang, wifi, siri, enable location, etc) and choose setup as new phone (don't worry your apps, data, contacts, mail will still be there). Do NOT restore from iCloud or iTunes (It can copy back corrupt settings)

    3. Turn off system location services timezone and iAd

    4. Fully discharge battery (until you get the spinning wheel and it shuts off)

    5. Fully recharge battery (overnight if possible)

In my experience this improves the Standby battery drain issue significantly in most cases.  It reduces drain from 2-4% or more per hr to 0.5% or less. It has worked for many, many users now. If it does not work after a few try's you may have a real battery or hardware issue and should contact Apple.  Good Luck!

My battery life has now drastically improved on the 4S!I have 26% life left after a full charge 24 hours ago (includes leaving on all night). This is about what I used to have with the iPhone 4. I have had moderate usage during this time, used Siri, check mail, browsed web, texted, and used multiple apps. After updating the software to the new iOS 5.0.1 my battery actually drained faster, like most reporting here. Upon my first full charge after the update I had a 12% decline in battery in one hour not even touching the phone for one thing.  The first thing I noticed is I don't think the battery meter is very accurate. The meter drops faster in the beginning and slows down as you approach low battery. Then it hangs on 1% for a long time, almost like a reserve gas tank. Once I updated the new software I turned back on all my location settings to on. My screen is at full brightness,  iCloud is on,  Bluetooth off, 11 notifications (weather, messages, phone, ap mobile, facebook, cnbc, espn, reminders, calendar, mail, words free) on, location services on, with Facebook, gas buddy, maps, Siri, and weather on. All system services on, and find my iPhone on.  I have not restored my phone once.

Want improved battery? Try these that worked for me.

My opinion is that the battery life has improved after a hand full of complete charges, and full drains of the battery. I believe this battery is getting better by running the full cycle, and because the battery meter isn't accurate it gives the illusion you have less battery life than you really do. Unless you have to have your phone plugged in and on, I had the best charge and life by plugging in phone to charge and then turning off the power for the night. This could be part of Apples glitch. That the phone appears to be fully charged by the meter, but maybe the phone isn't getting a full charge while left on? I also, double click the home button and kill all running apps, prior to shutting down and fully charging while off.

No I drove to the store and return them. I waited for 3 weeks and get a new one. I don't call Apple Store. Not for that headache. Should I let the battery drain completely? and then recharge to 100%?

The other phone was 16G. This phone I got is 32G. I already turned of a whole bunch of apps. I don't have SIM. I am in CDMA network (Sprint). They set up for me at the store. I felt like location service is the culpit. Because in matter of 2 hours from the store to my house, battery ran from 85% to 55%. I really don't want to return again.

Where should I find the instructions in here to set up again?

    Thanks for the help.

If Apple is using two different vendors for their 4s batteries and the performance varies by so much that one is "good" and other is "bad" than Apple needs to do some seriouis quality audits.

Apples semiconductor vendors maintain stringent quality controls and we are happy that they do so. If they did not.........

If this is indeed a variablity in battery performance between vendors, then Apple has some serious work to do on their quality program. I doubt that this is the issue.

iOS 5.01, 16gb 4s, all default location services and notications on, exchange with gmail.   Been consitently getting 6-8 hrs of usage and around 18-36 hrs of standby.  Usage is usally a mixture of gps, 3g and wifi.  I get longer times the less I use 3g and GPS.

I did turn iTunes wifi syncing off.  It was draining about twice the amount of battery in standby. note I leave itunes up all the time and though the mac goes to sleep, wake on demand checks from a time capsule which wakes it every few hrs causing itunes to ping the iphone device.  Also, when the mac is awake with iTunes running, it is pinging the phone even when not plugged in.  I saw alot of connections to the iphone in the OSX console log initiated from iTunes.  Sort of makes sense because in iTunes with wifi sync on, the phone is always visible and you can drag and drop content onto the phone all the time.  It needs to keep a connection open to the phone.   Turning it off reduced standby drop to 1-2% and hr from 2-4% and hr.

My usage for this screen shot was:

    - 1 hr of waze, 3g data on, bluetooth on broadcasting to FM

    - car stereo shuffled music

    - 45 minutes of 3g web browsing

    - 3 or 4 iMessages entered over 3g data.

    - rest of time, wifi web browsing, apps, standby overnight with 12 mails that came in

Rumor has it that 5.0.2 will release late next week.  It will hope to provide users of iphone 4s 10 hours of "normal" usage, with 40 hours of standby.  would this would be a real inprovment for most users?  Will it be enough to stem the tide of discord? let me know. Mike
