Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

Monday, November 21, 2011 3:29 PMApple allegedly delays iOS 5.0.2 to address memory leaksAppleInsider

Backpedaling on a rumor that Apple would release iOS 5.0.2 to address software bugs this week, a new rumor claims the update has been delayed due to memory leaks in the code.

    "Where is it...

There is no 5.0.2 in any developer release, so I really heartily doubt this is accurate. It would positively befuddle me for Apple to keep a minor bump some major secret... so secret that not even developers get to install and test it.

Although I could be wrong, from my vantage point there is no 5.0.2 right now - the whole thing is a myth. If it drops on our doorsteps tomorrow so much the better, but from what I can see, this is just a bunch of hooey."

This was posted as a comment on that thread at appleinsider.com by "tt92618" who by the sounds of it is a developer himself.

Doesn't really give me much confidence.

I'm really fed up with this and I don't know what to do. I took my phone off charge 7.5hrs ago and am sitting on 60%.

I have had less than 2hrs of use and about 5.5hrs of standby.

    No phone calls.

    2 text messages.

Less than 30mins of Safari and after 10 minutes or so my iPhone HEATS up to a level that makes my palm sweat!

    No Push notifications.

    No Bluetooth.

    No Wifi.

    No Location services.

    No Siri.

5.0.1, set-up as new iPhone, battery fully drained and charged at least 10 times.

I don't know what to do! Is it worth swapping it in for a new/refurb one?  From what I've read this is "Normal" for an iPhone 4s.

BTW Thankyou Mods for deleteling all the inane posts that were in the last page or two of this thread

iCloud: Everything on except: contacts, calendars, and reminders

Brightness @ 50% with autobrightness, bluetooth is off, and I turned off automatically send diagnostics information to Apple.

I had two days of the worse battery life ever. Three times fully charged at 100%, my iPhone started losing charge faster than ever, I'd say from 100 to 18% in three hours, without using it at all. Amazing.

Today I had a relief, but I'm not sure how much it's gonna last. Fearing it would drain while sleeping, and have a dead phone in the morning, last night I put it in AIRPLANE MODE. I've mentioned before it could be a syncing loop bug, and maybe this proved it to me. In airplane mode, it stopped draining battery completely. And after a full night without any wireless connection at all, I activated everything again in the morning. Well, so far, it's working normally, the heating is gone, and battery is normal even playing music and browsing, you name it.

Of course, having a phone in airplane mode is one of the worst workarounds I've ever found in my life.

That said, it still doesn't sync my contacts to iCloud. But at least it stopped trying to sync endlessly.

Still waiting for a software fix. Both to iOS and iCloud.

Mine heats up a lot over the course of a 15-20min phone call. I don't have another iPhone to comapre it to but a friend touched my phone after I hung up and told me his doesn't get "that warm at all."

My girlfriend is an iOS developer and so far there's been nothing about any 5.0.2 release that she's seen. She did see the 5.0.1 betas however. So I suspect either there is no 5.0.2 update or Apple isn't close to releasing it as a beta yet.

    A few things to try:

Like you already did, call the phone and see if you can see the light of the sensor.

Two, Turn on Siri's "Raise to Speak" and try raising it to your head (or use your hand to cover the sensor) and see if you can see it turned on.

Three, Turn Siri off then on again and see if the sensor lights up.

When on, it looks like this with the front-facing camera on an iPad2:

    IR Sensor Stuck On Cropped.jpg

Btw, since turning off Siri and rebooting my iPhone 4S I'm currently seeing these stats:

    Battery is at 4%

Call Time = (since hitting 100% and unplugging) 1 hour, 4 minutes

Usage = 16 hours, 1 minute (I haven't used it for 16 hours, no way.)

    Standby = 1 Day, 7 hours

    Greetings from Adelaide Australia.

Long time reader, first time poster... My 32GB white iPhone 4S had woeful battery life to begin with. I got it on release day and was so disappointed. My first iPhone and first smart phone struggled to make 8 hours before dying. I read all the posts and faithfully turned everything off. Managed a whole day but as we all know the bells and whistles are why we didn't buy a dumb phone.

I installed 5.0.1 when it was released (not remembering the perils of early adopting) and saw no change. But after my third reset all settings something clicked and the drain has stopped!! I now get About 7.5 hour of use and 35 hours standby. My use is mainly Internet on both wifi and 3G with some texting and a few emails. Actually quit a lot is just mucking about with settings. My settings are:

Wifi on, ask to join networks on

Notification centre on for weather, stocks, messages, phone, calendar, reminders, a few apps (not FB).

Location services are on for any app that might need them eg maps, around me, camera weather etc. off for angry birds etc. also off for traffic, time zone, iAds. Diagnostic data is not sent. Compas calibration and mobile network search are on.

Brightness is at about 45% with auto on.

Siri is on, raise to speak is off.

Bluetooth is off as I don't have any devices.

iCloud is on for everything but mail and backed up every night over wifi while charging.

I have only 1 email - gmail which is set to manual fetch.

I'm looking for advice... My phones never been connected to my computer as it was broken. It's now fixed and I want to put my iTunes library on my phone. What is the safest way of doing this without re triggering a battery drain issue. It seems others have had syncing issues and I don't want to kill my phone now that it almost works.

Any advice greatly appreciated oh wise people of the thread.

I see that you setup your phone almost the same as mine. Except that i have bluetooth turned on (all the time) to sync with handsfree kit in my car. Therefore, its expected that i dont get the excellent battery life you get. Anyway, i manage to use my phone the whole day without problem and charge it when i sleep ... with still 40+% left.

To sync with your iTunes library to add your music, video, etc... just plug into your PC/Mac with your iTunes library, sign in your Apple ID, authorize the PC/Mac (if it's new) to use your Apple ID,... and check whichever you need to sync on iTunes ... and the press sync. All the content will be sync-ed into your iPhone.

Dont worry about the newly synced data corrupting your iPhone and drain the battery. These data that you sync from iTunes library (except apps) dont use 3G, Wifi or location services... therefore will not affect the battery. The battery is usually drained by apps, services that propagate via 3G, wifi or GPS.

Great discussion and input.  I am losing about 1% per hour during the night after 100% charge.  During the day, my battery is using 2% to 4% per hour in stand-by but I am starting to suspect some of this usage is due to my email account.  Although I have my emails set to fetch every 30 minutes, my work email is an Exchange account and can drive 100 to 150 emails per day.  I believe this accounts for some of my battery drain and phantom usage even in stand-by.  I charged my phone to 100% at 10pm last night and it was down to 40% by 5pm today with light usage.  While this is far below the published specs, it is still usable and has improved considerably since I first recieved my phone 2-1/2 weeks ago.  Like many of you, I have found that turning off Siri raise to speak and turning of email push has greatly reduced the battery drainage.  I also have turned off most notifications, location system services and iCloud.  Bluetooth and WiFi are always on but 3G definitely consumes a lot of power.  Also, my car has built-in bluetooth which my phone is always connected to so that is also draining the battery.

I think there are 2 main independent issues here.  Of course this is just speculation based on my own experiences and what I have read on these forums:

    • The first is IOS5 has some bugs or corrupt installs that are creating uncontrolled background processes, runaway apps, or other issues that are accelerating battery consumption in sleep or stand-by mode.  I believe that the resets, restores and battery drains are terminating these background processes and/or in some cases correcting the corrupt OS.

    • The second is the dual antenna design and how inefficiently the 4S receives and manages wireless signals.  I believe all 4S's are affected by this and the differences users are seeing are dependent on location, cell tower, cell provider, signal strength, etc. as well as how they are using their phones.

I also believe the battery meter has a certain level of inaccuracy and is meant more as a guidance than a highly accurate meter.    Because of the battery drain issues, users including myself are expecting it to be a precise measurement of battery usage and that may not be the case and only adds to the confusion and frustration.

FWIW, my 3GS with a non-active SIM card was losing 10% to 15% per hour after the 5.0.1 update.  After doing a full restore from iTunes, the problem was corrected and although there still seems to be a level of phantom usage, the battery life is dramatically better.  This leads me to believe that we are dealing with a software/OS issue.

    Interesting,

Upto now I only found the problem with the 4S.

I might want to check up on the 3GS as well to see if it shows the same bug.

    Thanks Miless.

I will sync with confidence! I've been too paranoid to do anything now that I've got the phone working well. I just bought a Bluetooth kit for my car so I could even go wild and give that a go...

I saw an article that said someone has developed a way for these batteries to hold their charge 10x longer. Apparently it could be ready in 3 years. So problem nearly sorted then!

I don't see the light at all by trying all of three methods: calling, Siri on and off.

Does it mean the sensor light is broken? Thanks

This is for all the APPLE DEVELOPER ENGINEER TYPES...

YOUR PRIMARY EMPHASIS ON THE NEXT iPHONE MUST BE TWO THINGS:

    1.  4G CAPABILITY

    2.  A KICK-BUTT, MEGA-BATTERY, CAPABLE OF HANDLING WHAT THE iPHONE SHOULD BE CAPABLE OF DOING.

DO THESE TWO THINGS, AT LEAST, AND YOU'LL HAVE THE BEST PHONE, HANDS DOWN, OUT THERE!!

    PLEASE!!
