Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

I should have included [/Sarcasm On] in my last post.

The only backgound processes I should have on (that I can control) are a handful of notifications (turning off the Weather widget had no impact, so I left it on too).  WiFi is running but Bluetooth is off.  This configuration generates 30-45 min of 'usage' after 10 hrs on standby (for certain when I'm out of WiFi range-- I'll have to test it at home some more on WiFi).  Would this amout of reported usage be normal for that configuration?

Have you guys ever recognize the sensor light is on all the time? How does it contribute to the battery issue? Is it a bug? As W. Raider mentioned in this forum, I have the same thing on my phone. I don't know if it is also the problem to make the phone running down battery faster or not. Please post your experience. Thanks

Considering you have a normal phone and a usual setup/config, I think it would be quite informative if you would disclose your average standby drain % and standby "usage" - per hour... for the sake of comparison.

@ftlum - lolll. Well, I guess a few mins per hour on 10 hrs would yield 30 mins or something. And you haven't disclosed you drain %. I suggest you compare with someone like jamieson at the prorata of his setup. But no doubt there is such a thing as normal drain/usage during "standby". I guess at 5-10% it is no longer normal but I don't know exactly where one ends and the other begins...

I read in other posts that this infared sensor is for Siri when the "Raise To Speak" option is enabled.  Has anyone confirmed that disabling this option also disables the sensor?

    I'm using a 4s 16GB.

I've been watching this thread and trying all of your suggestions. I restored a few times, drained the battery all the way, turned off everything I didn't need and didn't see much of a difference. Then I restored and set up as a new phone and got a new SIM card on the same day. This seems to have worked. I did this all 3 days ago, and now I can make it through the day and just charge at night. And the other night I woke up at 2am and unplugged my phone and it was still at 100% when I woke up 4 hours later.

For example right now, I'm at (since last full charge):

    72% battery

2 hours, 27 minutes of usage

5 hours, 24 minutes of standby

I can live with this. Thanks for creating and maintaining the discusson.

I think you may want to consider that the press is running away from this thread.

    Best of luck and thanks.

    Just to repost some info:

I had the same major drain problem when I got my 4S. I did the update, drained the battery to dead and fully charged, shut off notifications, disabled Siri lift, and all non-needed locations.

I'm now at at reasonable rate of drain, about 2-3% per hour idling.

It seems that more people on here are using GSM providers. There has been some discussion of "new" simm cards helping.

I'm on Verizon which uses CDMA.

I suspect there is a bigger problem with the GSM phones and it's a software issue.

However, I am confident that Apple will fix this issue— one way or another.

We have to be patient. We want them to fix it RIGHT.

Do a test of your phone's talk time. Talk for an hour (or half hour) and see how much battery capacity that uses. If it's 13% per hour or less, that will confirm that your hardware is good.

    Patience people.

I don't see the light at all by trying all of three methods: calling, Siri on and off.

Does it mean the sensor light is broken? Thanks

It's infrared light, You are not going to see it with the naked eye.

But that IR diode drain is micro compared to other causes.

What I have posted is that my wifes NON Issue 4S started to have an issue last friday. The contacts got corrupted and her MY INFO setting would not STAY. It kept resetting back to "NO INFO", and iCloud was in a constant state of download !!! ( This was visible by the busy pinwheel spinning when the Contacts and or Phone app was Open)

This showed that the phone was full on internet load. Battery drain constant ( more if not on WIFI- 3G only)

To correct this, turn iCloud  Contact sync OFF with don't save the contact to phone. Then reboot the phone, turn iCloud Contacts sync back on with save to Phone. You contacts will now repopulate and then you can set MY INFO correctly and the constant download STOPPED !!! ALL IS WELL AGAIN !! NO ISSUES AGAIN>

Not for me, disabling Raise to Speak seems to leave the sensor on. For me, only turning off Siri and then rebooting the phone turned the sensor off.

Turning Siri on again, then using Siri, left the sensor on. Turning Siri off, rebooting I only saw the sensor turn on when making or receiving a call.

And this behaviour was tested and shown on two iPhone 4S's (one 32GB and the other 64GB)

So far battery drain has been better with Siri (and the sensor) off. But like I said, it's an improvement but no panacea.

What few people may realize is that with Siri off, you can still use Voice Command like on an iPhone 4 (holding down the Home button) to make calls which is what I used Siri for 99% of the time anyway.

I am surprised that this idea is still around, about the IR sensor.

This is on your second phone, what is the model again you have?

    Thanks

You could as well, just to help out. There may be a problem with that, correct?

Hey, everyone knows I don't have the Iphone. On the other hand, my analysis was entirely sound. Would you want to hide the real specs and what Apple says in its own documentation? You stand for what? I did help out the guy. He was unaware of the "usage" definition. Just don't start and bite your tongue.

Yes I do have 5.0.1 installed.

When I first bought the phone, it had really bad battery life.

All I did was restore iOS and setup as new phone and it seemed to improve after I changed those settings.

For what it's worth, I turned on Raise to Speak and noticed the IR sensor turn on.  When I turned the feature off, (SIRI is still on), the light stayed on until I rebooted the phone.
