Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

I'm not up to speed on all the technical terms. All I know is I bought an iPhone 4 less than six months ago and was absolutely thrilled with it. No battery problems, everything worked fine. Then these two updates came along ...

After 5.0 I noticed the phone getting warmer than it ever did before.

After 5.0.1 it gets downright HOT HOT HOT ... and the battery life has fallen away to an intolerable degree.

Just to make it through the day and still have a phone that can send and receive texts until evening, I have to switch off all wifi, data transfer, location services etc etc. And of course I can't use music or anything outrageous like that ...

So in my mind that leaves me back in the 1990s... I can call and send texts. What's the point in having a damned iPhone if that's all I can do?

Sorry, I am a long time Apple fan (iMacs, Macbooks etc) ... but my short experience with iPhones has been sh*t. I just went out and bought an android Phone as a backup (and it works) (and the battery lasts all day easily with everything switched on).

I dearly hope Apple sorts this out. I WANT to be an iPhone person. But I will not put up with poor service and poor products.

For me with 5.0.1 battery life is improved (now 24h standby and 4,5h ON) listening to mp3 yesterday, internet on 3g etc = 32% now, it seems quite good comparable to my 3gs...

I agree ever since I updated my iPhone 4 and iPad to IOS 5 the battery life has gone down the toilet it's actually a bit ridiculous at this stage . While surfing the net on my phone the other day it was using up to 1% every 3 minutes???? Before this I had excellent battery life for a smartphone.5.0.1 has deff made things worse for me.

I would like to ask a question:  Should I update to 5.0.1 through iTunes and follow the instruction for reset?

Here is my battery condition with 5.0. I didn't have the heating issue like the first one.

I completed 2 fully drain already. Just one reset. I am charging now thru PC for the third cycle. The second charge through PC and I ran down with 3 hrs and 10 minutes usage (you tube, games, texts), and 1 day and 1 hr standy.

I have Sprint network and I used network data, no wifi. Most of the stuff are on for Siri,Find my phone, no iCloud, no email.

    Thanks

Thanks. Well, I think my phone works fine but nowhere near  to Apple's specs, so I think there is probably still some software issue. A lot of people said they had their phone battery extremely improved after update 5.0.1 with resetting like other discussions. I am just curious, but I don't want to risk because I am not a tech person.

Sprint data is very crappy so I think it eats up a lot of battery too.

So they tell us to turn off siri for better battery consumption, to turn off location services, tu turn off the brightness sensor, to turn off ping in itunes, to turn off push for email. Why don`t we just all shut down the phones for better consumption. That will do it:))). But seriously, this stinks...it`s unacceptable for a battery to last 10 hours

I've been trying to stop the excessive battery drain on my 4S and noticed a post from an Italian iOS engineer

His observation was that a bug in the video card driver could be causing the battery drain. My 4S was just fine out of the box, but, it started "misbehaving" about a week ago (get only ~4-5 hrs usage / ~8-10 hrs standby)

His recommend workaround has stopped my 4S from misbehaving (so far!):

       - shut down all apps (from double-clicking the home button)

       - soft-reboot the iPhone

       - then: if the misbehavior recurs:
            - redo the above two steps, and,
            - try not to use the app which caused the error (e.g. Monopoly, Facebook, etc) ... well at least until Apple releases a stable fix

Could you guys try this as well and let me know if it works for you as well ?!?!

Made new vid about the iphone battery software issue : here

Currently testing a workaround that should work for all configurations. Due to resource limitations ( only have 1 iPhone for testing ) the testing is slow but progress is made every day.

Check this forum or the site for more info soon.

I've tried a lot of the "solutions" listed before (including installing the 5.0.1 update, which didn't help), but after this one, last thing I tried, I've finally achieved some great battery life.  It may be too soon to tell, but here's what I did (based on someone's recommendation earlier)...

Go into Settings->General->Siri, and turn Siri off.  Not just "raise to speak", but turn Siri off altogether.  Then, reboot the phone by pressing and holding the the power and home button simultaneously for about ten seconds till it shuts off (ignore the slider).  Then, turn it back on.  Now, go back into settings to turn Siri back on.  Voila, you're done!  FYI: I had rebooted the phone maybe 2 times since I installed the iOS 5.0.1 via over-the-air update, but this was the only time I did it with Siri toggled off.

Now, it seems like I get great battery life.  I've got 19 minutes "usage", 2 hours 18 minutes "standby", and I'm only down to 99% battery life.  That's losing less than 1% an hour with little usage (admitedly, very little usage).  Previously, under very similar circumstances, I could have lost in the range of 3% - 5% per hour.  In fact, just yesterday, I had that stupid situation during my commute to work where I wasn't using my phone, yet it said I had 1 hour "usage" and 1 hour "standby" and lost 11% of battery life!  I'm aware that some process run in the background (mail, etc.), but under similar circumstances today, I had less than 3 minutes usage.  So, now it looks like I'm cured.

One more interesting thing to notice... after I did that reboot that I mentioned, I noticed that now I have a "Personal Hotspot" setting right there on the main page of settings (it used to be buried under Settings->General->Network, and every time I would look at that page, it would try to search for a personal hotspot, which I'm sure would sap some power; and who's to say that it wasn't running intermittently in the background?).  I suppose it's possible that this "Personal Hotspot" moved to it's new place right on the main settings page as part of the iOS 5.0.1 update, but I didn't notice it until just yesterday after I did that reboot.

I found some thing, me got battery issue as you all, but when yesterday i turned off WIFi Cellular Data, my battery ife seems more better, i can use iphone like 1 full day + soeme of second, but when i turn on WIFi \Cellular - my battery going 1% per 3mins, i deleted iCloud and turned WiFi on after, 1% per 3 min anyway... so i stay off WiFi + Cellular data - and can use IpHone like a normal phone without so big battery drain..

Dats the only thing that can make my battery alive...

APPLE - this is the most amazing iPhone yet>????? Please - do faster 5.0.2!!!!! me is so sad =(

This is the best so far.  Haven't done anything different since my first post here.  Texted, surf FB, email, surf the net with Safari, listen to music +/- 1hr per day...I let the phone shut down by itself twice.  Then fully charged it both times with my MacBook Pro.  Don't know if this helped but it seems to be better than before.

    -IOS 5.0.1

    -Time zone turned off

    -iAd turned off

    -Bluetooth off

-Push on Calendar, Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail and Facebook

-Wifi on at work and at home

    -3G while out and about

    iPhone.jpg

BTW I let it run down again last night, 3rd time in a row.  Charged it, wall outlet, while I was sleeping.  8am this morning it was at 100%.  Now it's down to 90%, 56 min usage 3 hrs and 46 mins standby.

    Happy Holidays guys!

My iPhone has been excellent... I now have 66% battery life after one hour of use and with about 70 hours standby.... I turn off celluar data, wifi and bluetooth unless I need to use it....

My new iPhone 4s battery life is very poor and iOS 5.0.1 didn't improve it.

I hope that this issue is not hardware, but I'm not totally optimistic.

I read that there might be a bug with the proximity sensor always on, but I think that even if this is a real bug, this is not the biggest one that cause the battery drain.

I really hope for a fix in IOS 5.0.2.

    A quick fix.
