Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

Finally, I solved the syncing error loop. My contacts are syncing flawessly again between my devices and iCloud, and yes, the battery stopped draining, which is the main topic here.

I followed instructions from buxbuster (check his workaround a few pages up!) and an additional BIG step to restore contacts and syncing, as seen in a MacRumors forum.

    This is what I did:

    1. Make a backup of your Address Book, using the vCard option (or both, it doesn't hurt). Save it for later.

    2. In your iPhone, delete iCloud account. When it asks, accept both: delete AND delete from my iPhone.

    3. Reset network settings. The iPhone will restart, then will ask you to unlock the SIM card.

    4.Turn Wi-Fi on.

    5. Add the iCloud account again.

That's for Buxbuster's workaround. For some, it might work just like that. My iPhone repopulated from iCloud after step 5, but I still had that "server error" on iCloud. I had to do some extra steps, since my Mac was not syncing to iCloud and couldn't edit anything on my Mac or iCloud. Syncing back had to be fixed, too. If not, the syncing loop would continue from my iPhone, and the battery would drain awfully again.

    1. In System Preferences -> iCloud, I turned Contacts off. I chose "keep on My Mac" those contacts, but I got an empty Address Book after a while. And a few minutes later, iCloud contacts were empty and my iPhone also. It is scary at first! Now, before importing that vCard backup...

    2. Turn Wi-Fi off. This is important, since your contact-empty iCloud will attempt to wipe your Address Book from your Mac in seconds after importing.

    3. Import your vCard backup to Address Book. Just drag it to your blank Address Book window; it asks if you want to import "x" number of cards. Of course, say yes.

    4. Turn Wi-Fi on, and then iCloud contacts on again (System Preferences -> iCloud). It will offer to merge your newly populated Address Book with iCloud (which is empty at this point). It should upload every single contact to iCloud, and then to your iDevices. If not, a fifth step would be to import the vCard file to iCloud, but it shouldn't be necessary.

So, with iCloud syncing working correctly, there is no battery draining! Again, that was my particular issue.

I can't tell if this is the single answer to the widely spread battery draining problem, but it sure can be fixed with these workarounds, and yes, Apple should address the problem with a future update, for we affected customers don't need workarounds in the first place

    This is the MacRumors discussion:

    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1256807

And dont' forget to check buxbuster's fix, video, and THANK him!

    Best of luck!

iOS 5.0.1 *****. This iPhone situation *****. Barely 4 hours of use and 10 hours of standby. Thanks fr the android type phone and battery life apple. I'm glad I wasted my upgrade on this and got roped into another 2year contract.  I bought expecting apple quality. And the fact that no statements are being made or any issues are being resolved just ****** me off

Thanks for the details. I guess as much that it has to do with their new database structure... either with iCal or contacts, or both.

And also iClouds continuous sync-ing.... is the main difference between iOS 4 and iOS 5. And its the problem which caused infinite loop (pun intended) of propagation to sync with iCloud which drains the battery.

@1AppleADayNoWay  What the He!! does this have to do with the topic at hand? You, my friend have jumped the shark.  Don't know what that means? Look it up.

Please keep your politics out of the forums.

Maybe you jumped the gun. How do privacy issues equate to politics?? What, because my post contains a reminder of the location issue and you don't like that? Isn't privacy a concern of the user base or are you going to frame that issue as "politics", something Apple users shouldn't concern themselves with? In the CarrierIQ case, there are claims that such metric gathering had impacts on data loads and battery life. Privacy competes with network support in that context, and support is the rationale for such metric gathering. Furthermore this comment was part of an ongoing discussion which also serves the purpose of educating users about current mobile issues and trends.

Have you even read my post at all? Don't you have a single interesting thing to say on that issue with your support experience? On 400 pages in this thread, I have yet to see one of you multi level priest guys being useful at anything but PR.

I also have yet to see you post anything helpful. Probably why you have 0 points. You do nothing on people's posts except rant instead of providing them with solutions. You are obviously not a fan of Apple so I'm not sure why you decided to join Apple Support Communities. I mean, your username says it all.

Jony Ive's design are like Dieter Rams, Achille Castiglioni, Jasper Morrison, and to a certain extend, Chris Bangle. Their design is classic, minimalistic and everlasting.

    This is inspiring... http://www.vitsoe.com/en/gb/about/dieterrams/gooddesign

That was very interesting, as I admit I'm entirely clueless about design, so I really enjoyed that link there. His T1000 radio is really a masterpiece - I like those old multiband. My fashion statement was really more geared at lifestyle and associated behaviors, not really at the phone design, which is great, even for the layman I am. I also notice Ive won prizes for the Iphone design. Thanks for elevating my thinking on the subject!

This just means you have not been following the thread closely, as I've been helpful to quite a few users on more than one occasion - for instance I often demystified the usage specs for the phone, but I accepted a long time ago I wouldn't be getting any points here, but you know it's not about being helpful or not, it's about being pro Apple or not. I'll concede I'm contrarian and challenging though. I can say I'm a real fan of OSX. I even had it installed on my cheap netbook but since I only have a small synaptics touchpad, it wasn't really on par in terms of precision. You're right I'm not a fan of the corporate Apple. I remember slightly clashing with you on the "finally someone with common sense here" copy paste thingy on the other thread. Don't hold a grudge, it was really spot on

To further answer your question about why I joined, well I had read the thread had reached 100 000 hits and I felt like taking the pulse. I'm a straightforward type of guy, I initially came to "be in your face", but then I was appalled at the lack of knowledge of the user base, so I decided to use some creative support to help some people - that also involved showing the truth about some ridiculous usage claims for example, or challenging some of Apple's decisions about the phone and making suggestions in terms of support - you see, fanboism or enthusiasm or whatever you may call it hinders support. I also tried to foster reasoning and empowering logic. I did believe this could be constructive. I still believe so.

I learn a lot from them too. To be simple, minimal yet elegant is more difftcult to achieve than to be fashionable. Like what Leonardo Da Vinci said, "Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication".

If you look at Dieter Rams' designs, you realize that Jony Ive took a lot of design cues from him. E.g. the ET66 Braun calculator desgined in 1987 look similar to the calculator app on the Mac and iPhone. The TP1 radio designed in 1959, look similar to the original iPod classic of 2002.

Also seems like the G5 Mac tower cases bear some resemblance to the T1000 radio!!

Yes... how can i miss that.

The door opening, the handle, the clean lines... classic Rams design borrowed/stolen by Ive.

Yes, wiping your phone helps getting rid of this syncing bug. There is always a chance you'll get it back though.....

Thanx for the reference and the info!

Interesting experiment you have performed : I am also currently testing the sync mechanisms between the Mac ( with iTunes ) , iCloud and the iPhone using Wifi, USB and 3G.

The first workaround ( turn off wifi-sync in iTunes ), worked for me, but not for most others ( The poll indicated this )

The second workaround seems to work for a lot more people( remove iCloud, reset network settings )

The third workaround I am working on should clearly point the finger at where this battery drainage bug is located and should work for all iPhone users ( Well, that's my aim at least )

    Regards.

You guys are hinting at the idea that sync sanity varies with protocol or what?

kloposso, please leave your phone to idle for 1 hour. Turn off push email, bluetooth and icloud photo streaming. Mark your battery level before you start. During this hour do not use your phone. If you get a sms or phonecall, please start your measurement again. After this hour of idling your battery should not have depleted more than 1 or 2 percent.

I consistently see setups with the sync bug to deplete a lot more within an hour( 3-6 percent ) than sync bug free setups ( only 1 percent / hour max depletion whilst idling )

    Hope this helps.

    Regards.
