Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

So I've tried deciphering my iPhone 4s problem for 3 weeks now.  I've tried a restore, reset, and all the settings.  After 2weeks, it was clear that no matter the stanby time, I was consistently getting 6hours of "usage" as it says in the settings.  But it was very obvious that I was using it less than6 hours.  There seemed to be phantom usage all the time.  I confirmed this by leaving it on overnight and checking the usage when I wake up.

On a normal weekday use I would always be at 1% by 9pm.  That is starting my day at 8am.

All my location services had been turned off EXCEPT CELL NETWORK SEARCH which was ON.  I left this on because it was suggested that this be left on.

I finally tried turning CELL NETWORK SEARCH OFF.   Since doing so, I've had big battery improvements.  It is now 9pm and I am still at 20% remaining.  Phantom usage also has been cut down. Yes there still is phantom usage but not as much.  Right now it reads 5hours 30min usage but it feels a more accurate reading.  ( stanby is 17 hours 21 min)

iCloud, yahoo mail and calendar is set to Manual.

Worth a try. It worked for me, I hope it works for others.

    Welcome to the forum :-)

These are my own tested workarounds that worked for my iPhone 4S and seemed to have worked for others as well :

Workaround number 1. Deselect wifi-sync in iTunes and press sync.

If that doesn't work try :

Workaround number 2 : Remove iCloud, reset network settings. ( I guess this won't work for you since you don't have it enabled ).

If both workarounds fail, you can always try to completely wipe your phone. That also solved some of the cases out there.

I'm currently working on workaround #3 : the removal of the iPhone battery drainage without removing iCloud.

If you tried any of the workarounds, don't forget to fill in the poll on my site and leave valuable feedback so I know if I'm on the right track.

    Regards.

(for me) its really funny, apple doesnt do or doesnt write anything to calm people down about this problem, or just inform people when it will be fixed, but you trying to work on the problem, and posting workarounds..they dont give a s***, you and so many other people do.

Italy here as well, with WIND operator (not official partner, but I bought my iPhone 4S 32 Gb full price at the Apple Store and it needs to work with my operator of choice, no matter what, that's the promise behind the "unlocked" device).

Huge problems with battery (already replaced the iPhone once, maybe I'll need to replace it twice) and with 3G reception.

We need a fix asap on this Apple, or this is gonna mutate fast from "my first iPhone" to "my first AND LAST iOS device".

Really, it's time to fix this.

Worldwide and expecially in Italy, where we have the privilege to pay more for our "unlocked" iPhones than any other european country. This starts to get offensive.

It's because I was also freaked out about my own iPhone battery being drained so fast that I decided to do something about it. I also had my share of angry phone calls with my provider regarding battery life but got zero on my requests. Like I said : I just decided to do something about it, started my site and got to work on finding a solution because I was convinced this battery drainage is due to a software flaw. So far 2 workarounds have been found and I am absolutely sure I'll find the one workaround that will work for everyone. I could use some help though, that would speed things up a lot.

    Regards.

Yeah, understand your opinion, but this is just a sad sad thing.

A multimillioner company do not do anything, and their products are so freaking expensive. you expect more than that my friend.

The problem regarding this IOS 5.0 and 5.0.1 battery drain issue is a very very complex one. Because Apple isn't capable of removing this syncing problem shows only how complex the issue is. Apple's engineers are very smart but they look at the problem from the inside-out. I am trying to find the culprit by looking from the outside-in. All the people trying something and posting their experiences online are looking at the problem from the outside-in. A very valuable resource I might add which isn't harvested enough by Apple ( in this case )

It's rather uncanny how Apple works...but it works.  It's also interesting to see the cult-like following of Apple. Just stop-by a store and you'll get the visual.  Here's an interesting read: Apple's annual report: http://investor.apple.com/

How to completely wipe out your phone? Is it different than reset all setting?

I did hard reset by holding sleep/wake button with Home button.

Do I have to use iTunes to restore factory setting? The first phone I returned, somebody showed me so I can't remember any more.

    Thanks

Hi Buxbuster... Thank you... your workaround 2 helped me... Now the battery drain is around 1 -2 % per hour...

I guess this is the best which could be achived right now till or if ever Apple fix this issue,,,

    Thank a million

I have gone to your site and voted as well...

    Wailting for the workaround 3...

I am pretty much sure the battery life could be further improved..

Good luck and keep us posted

Got a new MicroSim card and solved my problem! I tried so many combos of disabling services etc but the phone would report usage even when it was not being used. I read somewhere (i think it was in this thread) that somebody got a new SIM card so i tried it and it worked (no batery drain, no "phantom usage" and I now have most of location services, notifications & siri on). I had the microSIM since about one year ago when i first got the iphone 4 and didnt have a problem until i got the iphone 4s. I guess it could have been normal wear and tear of the card or a new chip for the new card. Dont really know if this is the same issue that most of the people are having, but if someone else also tries this and works it may help to let everyone know...

May be you  refer to my posts here several days ago where i explain having solved

the phantom usage only in using a new SIM card.

Some others users have also reported the same

    It costs nothing to try....
