Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

4S is my first iPhone ever. Not even a week and i've had to charge it twice already. This is with 3G turned off.

Anybody heard of any fix to increase battery life?

    Hi,

I have an iPhone 4S 64GB and am facing serious battery issues, i started off using the iOS (5.0.1 version 9A405) update as soon as i got my new phone.

The battery doesnt even last a day, i have to charge it during the day as well as in the evening. And when i wake up in the morning, it already 50%.

I have now turned off Wifi, location services, most notifications, etc, still can see the battering draining 1-2% every 15-20 mins without any use.

My daily usage otherwise is also very less. Almost no calls or text.

Some music or video playback in between but not much. 3D games for 20-30 mins.

I earlier used facebook messenger and G-mail with notifications set up, but have now turned that off, seeing the user comments here on this forum.

Btw, how do you see those error logs? Have you installed some app for it?

Hoping that Apple resolves this issue soon, as it is seriously very frustrating at the moment.

The battery life *****!!! I am an apple guy with a Mac, ipad2, iPhone 3GS and now this pos crappy iPhone4s!!!!  What is the point of having features if u can use them?!

Try this and see if it helps....

If u have a purple arrow in the upper right hand corner you need to go into settings--iCloud---notifications and turn it off.  The arrow should turn off and increase your battery life. I charge my phone every nite and can go most of the day with more than 30%.  It still suxs though, I actually thought abou returning my phone and going with android!!!!

Corrected the software version in the above post.

Also, i found the Diagnostics logs, and it shows me lots of errors:-

    awdd_.......

    log-aggregated-......

    LatestCrash.plist....

    and some others like this...

It seems to be me now that there are a lot of software errors happening which i din't realize at first.

May be some of these cause battery drain!!

Importantly, i think, i have my Diagnostics settings set to "Automatically Send" to Apple.

So, possibly people are on it already, to resolve these issues.

    Regards!

Yes, Aviator1973, i agree to your point that "whats the point in having so many features when one cannot use them?"   I have read on various places on the internet that one must turn off these many settings, but why then do we have these features. The phone should be capable enough to handle all its features and still give excellent performance. That is what counts i think.

I could see the purple arrow till about a day back, didn't know what it was for. Now i guess it is clear that it indicates notifications usage. However as i have turned off most of the things, now i dont see it. Still the battery is draining.

I also found one app which i had downloaded, and was showing various logs in the diagnostics data. So, now i have removed it from my phone. I now realized why the APP used to crash quite frequently.

Let's see if it makes any difference (don't think so btw).

But, getting to the point, it is of no use turning all these wifi, location settings, notifications, etc....all because your phone can't handle it.

Expecting Apple to fix the issues soon.

    Regards!

Today mine was 20% battery drain in around 4 hrs..with little use. Was just trying to tweak settings and all to check battery drain.

Is this good?  (dont think so... )

Thanks. I haven't done what you asked. Not sure why I needed to in the first place. Not of the 8 iPhones I've had to deal with in the past have ever had this issue straight out of the box. Somehow I feel that isn't really the problem. I mean, if Apple is shipping these things out as fast as they build them (mine was in China only 2 days before I got it) would that really affect the battery's charge, or ability to hold one? The thing is draining power as I watch it. Never seen that happen since some FUBAR update once on the 3GS.

Anyway, if the battery requires that kind of TLC, shouldn't there be some kind of instruction to deal with this packed inside the box?

    Guys,

Following on the other above posts (iPhone 4S 64 GB, 5.0.1 version 9A405):

I have tried most of the twists and tweaks that are mentioned online in forums/other websites to limit the battery drain. For ex:-

    Turn off

    1. wifi.

    2. Location settings

    3. SIRI raise to speak

    4. Push notifications

    - Reset all Phone settings

    - Soft restart of Phone

    - Hard restart of Phone

    and some others...

But, these all things dont solve my problem. 2-3% drain every 15-20 mins  (20-25% drain in around 4 hours time). I can simply keep the phone in front of me...and see it draining out in 15 mins or so...

Then i simply put it on the "Airplane mode" and BANG.....  1% drain in 2 hours and still counting....!!

    BANG ON!!

This phone is not meant to be running in "NON Airplane mode" ...ROFL....Just kidding..

But on a serious note, i think, everything about the SIRI, location settings, etc, etc...is not the actual root cause for possibly many users.

It is something with the Cellular network connection that is draining out the Phone!!!

Be it a software issue or some hardware antenna / frequency issue, but to me it looks like something wrong with the network. Something that is running in the background when in the normal "Non Airplane" mode!!!

    Regards!

After getting the phone I took it  out of the box, updated the sw to 5.0.1 and setit as a new phone. Right from the first day the battery life was awful; maximum10hrs of standby and 2 hrs of usage.

On Saturday I decided to get a new micro-Sim to replace the oneI was using ( a 2 yrs old SIM, cut with the tool in the store).

Since then my battery life increased drastically to 23hrsstandby and 6hrs of usage (approximately).

Did someone noticed an increase in the battery life over theweekend (maybe Apple changed something on their servers) ?

If not I guess getting a new micro-sim helped….which is kind of weird.

I have just done a battery rundown test of my iphone whilst using it as i normally would:

Wifi always on, 3G always on

Siri off, diags off, system services off except for traffic and compass calibration

These are my results with 6% battery life remaining:

33.2% (1 day 3 hrs) has been lost on standby where only 13.5% should have been lost.

16% (13 hrs) was lost overnight on standby.

59.8% has been used for** (6 hrs 20 mins).

3% has been used for calls over 3G (13 mins 2 secs).

**texts, browsing over wifi and 3G, reading emails, YouTube, e-reader app.

    As you can see with the results above, my iPhone 4s 32gb 5.0.1 is running fine except for one thing;

The standby is half of what it should be. I am losing over 1% an hour where I should be losing only 0.5% an hour

So apple, please do something about the standby time!!!!

Note: 80% of the time I was in an area of full coverage (4-5 bars). And the wifi was also at 100%.

I believe majority of post is about the standby time, so there must definitely be something on when the phone is on standby!!!

    Hi gianseo,

Were you facing STAND BY battery drain?

Your case seems to be quite promising. Using the micro SIM, may be i will also try this. Thanks!

Yes, I was losing up to 30% overnight (8hrs).

Let us know if you see any improvement with a new Micro SIM

We had a 3gs 8g ans a 3gs 6g.  Updated to iOS 5 the same day, Oct 27.  The 3gs 8g is still performing well, the battery last several days, with light calling, bluetooth on continuously, wifi on.  The 3gs 16g goes from 96% at midnight to completely dead at 8:00am.  no bluetooth, wifi or location services.  Updated to iOS 5.0.1.  Same thing.

    Replaced the 3gs 16g with a 4s 16g.  Same problem.  the 3gs 8g still lasts several days.

Could this problem be RAM size-related?  Has anyone looked at that?
