@DJ.JAN
I fully agree with you DJ.JAN. It makes no sense to turn off the 3G all the time. At least when I am home (>50% of day) I am turning 3G off just to save some battery and this is not the way a SMARTphone should be used or designed!

I agree with you in the things you just mentioned above but in my case battery issues started just one week ago and all the time before I didn't have any problems nither on iOS 5.0.0 nor on iOS 5.0.1.
There are plenty of bugs in iPhone 4S and/iOS 5. For now it looks like they can be divided in these categories:
- bad SIM reads
- video card (driver?)
- GPS (location services -> system services)
- 3G (see the forum for static bugs, i.e. one can hear noise when the internet connection are used over 3G;hardware bug?)
- iOS 5bugs
- apps bugs
Now one has plenty of combinations to choose from here! Still I am not 100% sure that all these bugs can be fixed 100% thru software/firmware updates!
My feeling is that for example the 3G just "amplifies" for example the bugs from the apps when using the internet by increasing even more the battery drainage.
Also probably many iPhone 4s owners out there do not have Cellular Data plan at all and they do not experience such dramatic battery drain due to 3G as reported here.
Problems with celular data can also be caused by the server from wich they are send, propably google hase changed some things while they were implementing their new look for the gmail web interface.
This can be too. All I know that since I have updated my iPad to iOS 5.0.1 the Safari Browser on my iPad is crashing 3-4 times a day which was happening once a month while I had iOS 4.3.1!
It is also possible that there were changes on the providers celular network in order to fix some of the SIM problems reported by many users.
This might help for some categories of bugs but not for others.
I will just keep on investigating in that case and turning off 3G is not really an option ...
I couldn't agree more here with you. For now while I am sleeping I turn off the 3G.
...what's the reason to buy such an expensive smartphone if you can't use any of the features?!
I totally agree!
I am still wondering if I should return my iPhone 4S and buy an Android phone and in this way I would know from the beginning not to have so high expectations to begin with as I have with the iPhone 4S! An Android phone would be cheaper and I would get more or less the same experience (i.e. same battery life i.e. charging it every day, playing with settings instead of just using the phone, etc.)
