Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

Some maybe useless info but I recently charged my iPhone turned off and it managed to carry on the usage and standby of the previous charge, I managed to get to 10 hours of usage and 2+ days of standby, LOL! if only it was like that off one charge!

I do not know if this one helps but I found this http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html (link which provides some info over the s/n).

Now here is my story. I have a 64g iP4s which is an upgrade over an iP4 32g. I had the latter with iOS 5 and had NO problems. Not only that but after installing the iOS5 on the iP4 I set up 1 exchange, 1 IMAP and 1 icloud accounts all with push. I was impressed because the battery life did not at all diminish (maybe a little). Ip4 battery life was exceptional. Then i bought the 4s. I used icloud and restored the backup of 4. I noticed that the battery life was kind of short but i thought that it was because of the new battery. I drained the battery and charged it till full. Then it behaved better but still noticably worse that the iP4.Then after one day i woke up and noticed a 25% drop of the battery over sleep ,so I decided to install (OTA update)  iOS 5.0.1 to fix it. But it did not. So I reset network settings, restored as new and now I have no problem, BUT without using wifi sync and PUSH (manual only). I have icloud enabled though.Usually I have almost 1 day of stanby with 5-5,5 hours of use.

I have noticed also two more things.

a)I use a belkin car charger for my 3g, 3gs, 4, and now 4s. When I used NAVIGON app with 3g and 4 the battery seemed to charge  fast enough. But with 3gs and now 4s i could/can only see a rise in the battery of 1% / 7min and the battery gets hot. Does this shows that something is draining the battery?

b)I think that while using the bluetooth (a2dp stereo) while runing and using gps deteriorates the gps accuracy(nike+gps, and runkeeper tested).I had no problem with the ip4.

    Sorry for the long post!

Again only 1% battery drain per hour even with fetch set to 60 minutes for my exchange account!

Now I switched on "Find iPhone" service in iCloud settings.

By the way I'm still in my office and only on 3G, no WiFi. Battery dropped from 63% to 50% within the last eight hours including the rapid draining when I had the IMAP enabled and the phone connected with bluetooth to my car during my way to work, that look pretty good so far!

the easiest way to solve the issue is by the following:

    1- call apple 800 number

2- ask for a return box

3- send the piece of sh** to the return center

4- got your money back and go enjoy a samsung device.

    @bright raven & @bleeping apple.

I'm with Vodafone, and my serial number also begins with DNPG.

I have exactly the same problem. I've even replaced my Sim card, but it didn't make any difference.

Starting to suspect a bad batch of phones. Let me know if your replacement phone makes a difference.

How long will you need to be without a phone?

I find it interesting that the number of new posts on this topic is dwindling.  I'm starting to wonder if allot of this is application related and is being fixed as developers update their software.  I never had any of the major battery issues noted by some here but I think the battery is getting better even for me.  I use iCloud and Siri but I did turn off the "Raise to Speak" and turnedTimezone GPS thing because it makes sense for me to do that.  I have two push accounts and I can easily end the day with 70% battery life.  Overnight, I usually see a drop of 4%.

I also want to mention for what it's worth that I have five friends who have the 4s (1 Sprint, 1 Verizon, 3 AT&T) plus myself and none of us have had any battery issues.  The sprint user does have that "phantom usage statistic" and the occasional sim card failure but no battery problems on that user.

I had the same problems. Great battery life in my old iPhone 4 and a "sucker" iPhone 4S battery... I've tried everything, and most of the ideas shown here. But it was when I turned "Push" to "manual" in all applications that the battery started to behave normally... It's still not like my iPhone 4 yet, but... Let's wait for the next update.

    Peace!

I said that in the begining ! As with every new major OS improvment, older APP's will be an issue. But MOST don't listen or acknowledge these issues. They just loaded all previous apps and then complained latter when things were not right.

Clean installs or AS new are a must with new OS. Then load an app to test OR wait to see for any update compatability. Alot of apps may be OK, at 1st. But time tells. And that is the case HERE.

My Self and wife's 4s's are on 5.0.1 with NO BATT ISSUES. My 4s has some App's from my iPOD 1stgen( iOS3) and the wife's is a clean start. She has only added newer apps. Both or on the charger every 2-3 days ( her's 3-4)

I had 1 temp problem with an app's proccess not closing, deleted it/ restart phone then loaded it back, now all is well. Wife had a contacts sync loop. (this can be checked by turning off wifi and looking at 3g data usage increase, also see the busy pinwheel spinning when contacts or phone app open) Turned off iCloud contacts sync, choose not to keep contacts on phone( this will delete all contact on phone) Restart phone, then turn iCloud contacts sync back on and choose to Keep on phone. iCloud will load them back and the lop is killed.

IE: the sync was actually Downloading to the phone !! Not upload..

All my coworkers who have gotten a new 4s (VERIZON) have not had ANY issues either. Know there looks like it may be an incompatable SIM card issue with GSM. HMMMM.

One last thing: Battery stats are best case ussage. Are LISTED AS EACH POSSIBLE TIMES NOT COMBINED.

Using System monitor on a Full 100% charge it lists that My 4S has 300HRS Standby !!

bleepingApple, My serial # also begins with DNPG. This could be significant.

It could be and I'm happy to explore this as either a sim card issue or the reader itself for the cause on my phone. It might also be a massive red herring.

If we don't follow a logical pathway and explore viable resolutions to their proper conclusion, we may as well just randomly press buttons until the problem goes away. Or the battery dies.

I checked a useful link from Dreamstrider [http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html] and DNPG originate from China.

Can you follow bright raven's advice from yesterday and borrow another provider's sim to try out? I've not had the opportunity myself yet.

    @bleepingApple,

If you bought your phone with O2, it will be network locked, I guarantee that. They categorically refuse to unlock the 4S at the moment too - I've already had this argument with them, which is why I switched networks.

Thanks for the heads up. So I won't be able to get a PAYG sim from abroad to work? That will be annoying. Oh well.

For the bug reporter, you must be a registered developer. Then you can sign in to bugreport.apple.com and file a report. That is how I did this. (Registering as a developer is free, it only costs to enrol on a specific developer programme after this, such as iOS).

Oh, I see. Well, it's an avenue to try if the next step doesn't deliver. Thanks for the information.

Get a replacement phone, and check it in-store before you take it away. The serial number may be a giveaway as to whether it will work or not.

Good advice. I'll try and chance my arm in Covent Garden on Wednesday. Out of the UK on Sunday for a month so time's not on my side...

Regarding the posts focusing on the drop-off in post frequency here, beware the logical fallacy.

    @merlinthemog, bright raven and bleepingApple,

Found some info out for you regarding serial numbers.

The first two digits specify the factory that your iPhone was manufactured at.

Seems that the DN factory is producing the dodgy ones, since all your iphones begin DN, and my defective one also did too.

The C3 factory that made my replacement seems fine. See what your serial number is after you get a replacement.

After a couple of days with my new one now, everything seems fine. No more phantom usage, or battery drain.

Having said that, I wouldn't exactly call the battery life great (around 1.5% an hour on standby). The iPhone 4 was noticeably better. But it is still a significant improvement over my faulty one, which was losing 7% an hour doing nothing. I'm perfectly happy with it now, because I can at least get through a day with reasonably heavy use.

We had no battery issues as well or any of the phatom usage. Our performance was good under 5.0 and 5.0.1 on our 4s's. Loaded 5.1 and again, no issue. (On older models we use for testing. 4 Ipad, etc.)

Think there were some other issues here as well. For the most part I think users that had problems got some use out of the helpful post. Not to mention that seems the reality on the ground has changed, most reports related to the 4s are inline with the specs. (Again as was the case for us from the start.)

    All the Best, Thanks.

    Hi FiniteAffinity

Hmm, this is interesting news, thank you.

To be honest I'm not foolong myself that if I solve one issue that others won't remain.

Ok, that's decided it; I'm paying a 'genius' a visit on Wednesday....
