Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

I notice if i delete my Yahoo email account from my iphone everything is good.  I get almost 2 days Battery!!!  If I   add my Yahoo account back my Battery life is like 2-3 hours!!!    How many people have YAHOO on their IPHONE????  MAYBE IT HAS TO DO WITH THE WAY YAHOO IS INTERFACED TO OUR PHONES???

Interesting observation.  I have a yahoo account but have been focusing on my MS Exchange account which has been affecting my battery usage.  I will experiment in the next day or so.  A couple of questions for you - have you tried Fetch Manually with your Yahoo account?  Also have you turned off calendar and reminders for your mail account?

Thats exactly what I found out with my investigations posted here yesterday!

I have a google mail account which I was accessing via IMAP for emails & notes and via MS EXCHANGE for calendar and contacts.

Right now I only use the EXCHANGE server for mail, calendar and contacts - notes is not working with exchange but that's OK for the moment. Everything else ist turned on except localization for time zone setting and it works fine for me. Email fetch is set to 1 hour, iCloud services are activated. Battery drain in standby over the last 9 hours was aprox. 7% thats close to what I have before bettery issues came up just a week ago.

It seems as if in my case the IMAP account has been the problem. If the problem once occured and started to drain my battery I had to disable the account, kill the mail process and restat the iPhone. After that everything works normal. If I turn IMAP once again, sometimes it takes two or three hours but then battery problems start again...

I got iPhone 4 32Gb .. Well i upgraded to iOS 5.0.1 3 days back. The battery has been terribly bad since then. I got almost 6-7 hours and sometimes upto 9 hours of normal usage time when i was on iOS 4.3.3. But i hardly get 4 hours of usage on iOS 5.0.1. Battery drained approximately 13% overnight.

    I noticed few things:-

Setting up Exchange accounts use battery very much

Secondly when i dug deep in LOCATION SERVICES i noticed that COMPASS CALIBRATION and Time zone were constantly using location services. And i didnt have either of these running in background.

    Anyone noticed that..??

This are screenshots I did yesterday. Both iPhones are running iOS 5.0.1

This can't be right. While the 3GS uses 3% battery in 5 hours - the 4S draws almost 10% per hour. I also haven't managed to live longer than 15 hours on one battery charge with my 4S. This is so frustrating.

    Hi skoops,

Can you try swapping the SIM cards in your two phones and see what that does for your battery drain? I'm very curious about the outcome of such an experiment since I am unable to reproduce the battery drain over 3G on my own iPhone 4S. I can reproduce the drain over wifi, but not over 3G.

Also : it seems the drain is a lot faster over 3G. Don't forget to do a general/reset/reset network settings after the swap.

    Regards.

it's not easy swapping a regular sized sim-card with a micro-sim - i don't want to cut the larger one into pieces and then glue it back together :/

Your response was faster than I could edit my post. Of course you can't swap them since they have a different size.

Pitty, I still would like to see what would happen with your phone if you would have a SIM card from a phone that did not have this battery drainage. Maybe someone in your neighbourhood?

    Regards.

    @Merlinthemog

It is a 3-5 day turnaround. Vodafone were supposed to pick it up yesterday but their courier didn't turn up. They will probably pick it up today. I will keep you informed of what happens.

    Hi

The iPhone 4S does have improved battery life as it its dual core so it runs more efficently but the issues you are having are down to IOS 5 however in my case when i updated my 4s to 5.0.1 it improved now i lose about 2 % per hour

However you must note this the iPhone 4S is more effiencient and shoudl give you better battery appart from in standby mode where the battery is less than the previous models

Okay I found the serial number. It begins with DN and my battery drains at about 5% an hour on standby. When actually using it, it drains a while lot faster. And if I'm using the GPS, it can use up my battery in minutes.

there really is a software problem that causes the excessive spending of
battery. Inexplicably, even after Apple acknowledge the problem, some
people refuse to believe it. And while the apple does not solve the problem
(as if the ios 5.0.1 was a "shut up people"), we are here
watching our battery charge fall alarmingly

there must be a number of issues because the 5.0.1 update fixed my phone. i can get a good 36hours out of mine now with quite heavy use.

This is ridiculous.  The iPhone 4s has been out for almost two months and no fix.  My iPhone 4, running the same iOS lasts three times as long on the same battery charge/usage.  There is a problem and Apple needs to formally admit it and let us know they are working on it.  This discussion is 455 pages long filled with people suggesting/trying anything that is thrown at them, but no one getting anywhere.  Not to mention the several other discussions on the exact same topic.

Had I really believed that Apple wouldn't have a fix after two months I would have returned, cancelled, and continued to use my iPhone 4.  Now 30 days has passed and I'm stuck with this 4 hour phone and 20 hour paperweight.  In my time as an iPhone user (every phone Apple has produced) I've never had to think about how much, when, and is it worth using my phone.  Now before I wake it from sleep I think ahead to if I will need it later or will I be able to charge it later.  That's sad.

    Come on Apple.

Same here.  I have everything that draws power turned off, thus it is NOT an iphone anymore, but at least I can use it as  a phone and for email.  If you haven't done so, don't upgrade to 5.0.1 or 5.0 because it has affected my old 3S the same way.  It is software related, but could also be a battery issue.  The Date/Time GPS is the main drainer, as are the notifications, and other locations services.  Turn them all off for much better battrey life, then use it as a phone, email, and internet with decent battery life.  Apple, I hope and believe you are working on this problem, but an announcement would be nice.

I have already done the GENIUS bar appointment thingy, and they replaced the software (Erased and reloded 5.0.1) and replaced the battery.  With all iPhone wing dings turned on after leaving the store, the same problem was present (excessive battery drainage). With this article and tips below I at least have a phone, email, and the web for a day before having to recharge.  http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2395808,00.asp

I would hope when the new software fix arrives and fixes this, Apple will replace all our batteries that have already been excessively recharged because of this snafu in their software department.  Come on Apple, stand up and continue to be the best.  Other wise get ready to get bashed on the internet.  How about some updates on what is being attempted, instead of me continually having to search for whether an update has arrived.
