Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

    @RossPhoto

    My bad!

I will call it from now on the static issue (which is a hardware issue). I have battery drain issue at random times plus the static issue.

Out of interest - why is static noise considered a bug?

    No need to apologise :¬)

I would imagine it's nothing to worry about, hardware can 'whine' without detrimental effect.

    Let's hope so anyway!

It can be true but I doubt. If there is so much static noise then it can be that it affects the data connection over 3G and introduces errors in data comunication. More errors in data connection means that the iPhone 4S has to retransmit more data than normal and do more error corrections (= more CPU) than normal which in the end means more energy is needed to transmit the same amount of data=> more battery drain!

@Ed - Top right of this page, under Actions.

@enx - The noise made by hardware is not (usually) directly linked to the erroneous transmission of data.

but the static noise could be picked by the antenna of the iPhone 4S because the antenna is only few millimeters away! Only iPhone 4S has this static noise issue (older iPhone models are fine). Also iPhone 4S has two antennas instead of one as in the older models. Also many people have reported that they actually can hear sometimes the static noise during their phone calls. So definitevly this static noise gets in the middle of other things.

Results from new handset's first overnight test.

    Control Test:

WiFi & Mobile Data ON. Fetch @15mins. Set-up as my old phone, using its backup.

    Duration 8Hr12Min

    • Usage: 21mins
    • Standby: 8hr 12min
    • Battery %: 94
    • Gives: <0.75%/hr battery loss

So from initial use, the new handset has a drastic improvement over the old one. Battery is showing good results but more importantly for me, the usage is now a fraction of the standby time; previously it was doggedly half the standby time. This phone is much less 'busy' than the last one under the same circumstances and conditions. I am encouraged...

Let's not get too carried away, however. This is very early days.

Equally I am still choking the system back as I did in the first week of owning a 4S, in October. [No this, no that; all the things noted here to help reduce battery drain.]

I'm happy that this hardware exchange has resulted in a great improvement but I still think there is plenty to be done via an update to iOS5x to remedy the need to curtail advertised features.

I shall now add the other features I want slowly and see what affect that has on usage time.

To @bright raven, this might mean that you're replacement handset will be good for you too... Hope so.

Yeh ...  you found the solution for battery drain.

I've tried EVERY THING and the battery still drops....  the problem is the ios 5.01!

So with your sugestion a removed the SIM card !!!!  The battery stands for 2 days!

Oh!!    as I can't use the phone for calls, I replaced the SIM, and forward calls for a cheap Nokia, and switch off complety the iphone.  Now is fine.

Come on!!!!  Apple must admit the problem and get a solution very fast.

Switch off this and that, is not a solution. Is so STUPID as it is hold the phone with the rigt hand...

And YES!!!!!  I'm VERY HUNGRY and DISAPOINTED. And I call things by the name!!

As it is, this phone is rubbish !!!!

It looks like you got lucky! Congrats!

Do you have the static noise issue on your new iPhone 4S?

Yes, I can hear a tiny noise while any page is loading in Safari and the daisy is spinning at the top. I get this on both WiFi and 3G. Once page is loaded it ceases.

I also hear it on apps that use data. I tried the 'BBC News' app and 'TV Guide'; both take a while to refresh and use a lot of data, normally.

It sounds like data transmission to me. To possibly show up my ignorance, wouldn't the drive on these make such a noise?

As an update to my post above. I just noticed that this new handset is also lightening fast on 3g compared to my last one. I'm at home so I'm used to the page loading speeds I usually get. I was trying to open apps that I knew took a while for the purposes of testing for noise, BBC & TV guide being amongst the slowest. I barely had time to put it to my ear before both had refreshed all its data. Interesting...

@bleepingApple - faster 3G, that is very interesting indeed.

What's the serial number of your new handset (first 6 digits)?

Thanks. I have a problem with my front camera (it flashes bright white during FaceTime calls), if I go for a replacement set, I'll be looking for a serial of that period :¬)
