Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

apple just replaced my phone....I am now on number 4!  My genius denied all knowledge of any battery problems!  However they offered to replace my phone just like that!!!!!

The only other thing they told me to do to the phone (apart from everything on here which I said I refused to do as I had bought a smart phone to do smart things and had already tried to no improvement!) was to go to location services then scroll all the way to the bottom (beyond all the different apps) to "system service" and turn everything (traffic, compass callibration, diagnostics, etc) off in there except cell network search......  I'd done all the rest of location services off before to no avail.  Told him I might give it a try, but that I was reluctant to keep turning everything off as i felt I had bought a phone that was smart and that if this latest replacement wasn't smart I was going to ask O2 for a refund and revert to my 3GS.

Anyway....thought i would post his "idea" on here in case anyone else wants to try that one.....sorry if people have already turned that particular part of location services off!

Here is my results on 5.1 with light to medium usage for a day, a majority of it was a 2 hour call, facebook, texts and other 3G related stuff. My unit's serial also starts with C3, This has to be the best time I have gotten. Normally on 5.0.1 I get close to 5 hours with light to medium usage barely any calls and standby is usually outstanding with a little over 2 days on days I barely use my 4S. Im moving on to day 2 testing to see how standby is. Granted this is only Beta 1 but this looks like some very nice usage if they could actually get it to 10 hours of usage that would be perfect/more than acceptable.

Is it the case that C serials have better battery performance than the D serials then?

It's starting to look that way, It makes me wonder if one of the factories responsible for manufacturing the D serial numbers iPhone 4S's, had some stale batteries. I mean currently, the battery life for C's is still pretty beat for heavy users but for a light/medium user it can work a day or two tops.

In my previous post  [ https://discussions.apple.com/message/16958977#16958977 ] I told that I've never seen 1 day Stand-By on my 4S. So, I tried Telim's suggestion to turn off iCloud and now I am on 66% after 2h Usage & 11h Stand-By. Turning OFF iCloud get some improvement for me.

Mines a D model, and with 3G disabled, and only enabling Wi-Fi when needed, I get some good usage:

    /___sbsstatic___/migration-images/169/16967294-1.png

Couple of FaceTime calls, few phone calls, App Store browsing, email sending, photos and videos (ironically only to document the problem I have with front facing camera).

Siri on, iCloud off, System Location stull disabled.

Test 3 will be with Wi-Fi on all the time.

Over the past few nights, I've been rather upset over my 4s. What i usually do is charge my phone up while we're watching tv at night, and then when I go to bed, I take my iPhone with me and watch a video on hulu+ or netflix while falling asleep. Typically, when I"m done watching said shows, the battery will be at 93-95% after one sitcom of 23 minutes or so.

Since Monday of this week, when I wake up in the morning, my battery has shot down to 65-70%. Thats after sitting idle all night, from 95% down to 65%.

Last night, I even made sure that when I set my phone down, I closed all applications. The only thing I didn't do was unplug my headphones.

About a week ago, I had finally downloaded the first Infinity Blade game, and noticed it was sucking me dry as well, but that's to be expected. I finally, last night before bed, deleted the game from my phone, thinking it may have a snag in it. That's the only thing I've downloaded recently.

But to no avail, this morning, after closing all apps, and deleting the Infinity Blade app, I woke up with a dismal 70% left. I had a 3gs for 2 years, and even the last day I used it I would wake up with 95%.

My wife also has said hers has been getting abysmal battery life.

Any ideas? I've got most of the things turned off that we're supposed to turn off to make for better battery life, but it still is just awful!. I woke up at 7:30, its now 11:30, and I haven't used my phone at all except to check email, and its at 49%, down from 65% in a short 4 hour span, and that's from not using it at all!!!!

Did a battery rundown test on my 4S.

Here are the results (I have a C serial phone)

    WiFi: ON

    Data: ON

    Brightness: 50%

    Auto-Brightness: OFF

Signal: Average 4 out of 5 bars of signal

    Siri: ON

    Raise to speak: OFF

Volume was 100% on Apple earphones.

261 minutes of Video playing at zoomed level. 50% of battery lost

    HD 720p movie playing

522 minutes were expected on one full charge.

Altogether, 8.7 hours of video compared with Apple's 10 hours is good enough for more considering the variables...

I have to smile - now we are hearing to some noise behind the apple logo. As i wrote it is a hardware issue some user still believe apple with the software "thing", now i wonder that the searching begins for special series and numbers . As long as Apple is still quiet as worse it will be...wrong interpretations of iphone behaviour, wrong test results, insecure users. Let me write what i know: there is a big problem (i don't care if HW or SW), no solution and a very strange manufacturer - i think the only thing i can do is return my both 4s. If everybody does that we will have "maybe" a reaction. I like the iphone, i love it, but i have to realise that Apple doesn't care about.

    @scarface,

I don't think the DN factory has stale batteries. I believe that it is due to their SIM card readers being made by a different manufacturer to the C3 factory (the apple genius I saw told me that they do use several manufacturers for their components). My DN phone worked fine as long as I gave it a SIM card that it liked. Unfortunately for me, I am locked into a contract with T-Mobile (though the iPhone is unlocked), so I can't switch providers, and the phone I had did not "like" TMobile SIMs (tried 4 different ones, all drained the battery). With a Three or a O2UK SIM, the battery did not drain, it worked great.

My replacement which is a C3 now works fine with my TMobile SIM.

But that said, I can't exactly call the battery life good. It is still pretty poor, but at least it can get me through a day now, losing around 2% per hour on standby, rather than draining at nearly 10% per hour like before.

With a SIM that worked OK, my old DN phone worked great. I'm willing to bet that lots of people have iPhones that exhibit this problem, but don't realise because the SIM they are using works OK. They might see a problem if they try to put a different provider's SIM in, such as TMobile UK. It makes me wonder though... what exactly is the difference between different provider's SIMs that is causing this problem?

Anyway, hope the info helps people.

For anyone new to the thread be sure to go through these steps to address the battery after updating to iOS 5.0.1:

    1. Reset all settings (settings app-> general-> reset)

2 a. Go through initial setup steps (lang, wifi, siri, enable location, etc) and choose setup as new phone (don't worry your apps, data, contacts, mail will still be there). Do NOT restore from iCloud or iTunes (It can copy back corrupt settings)

2 b. If you do not get the complete new setup screen with language setup and setup as new phone or restore from iTune/iCloud backup, be sure to go back to #1 and reset all settings again (it should happen the second time)

    3. Turn off system location services timezone and iAd (settings -> location services -> system services)

    4. Fully discharge battery (until you get the spinning wheel and it shuts off)

    5. Fully recharge battery (overnight if possible)

In my experience this improves the Standby battery drain issue significantly in most cases.  It reduces drain from 2-4% or more per hr to 0.5% or less. It has worked for many, many users now. If it does not work after a few try's you may have a real battery or hardware issue and should contact Apple.  Good Luck!

This screenshot I've made this morning when I woke up. Fully charged last night and this morning 1/5 of the battery is gone without touching it.
Siri and "Raise to Speak" are "ON" ; Wifi & 3G - ON ; "Don't Send" for Diagnostics ; Location Services for System Services - All "OFF"... Mail & iCloud - Manualy.
I guess that last night Siri talked to herself for 1,5 hour...

    Hi Sid,

You can do a test track to get an idea were this usage is occuring.

Turn wifi off before you goto bed. Go under Cellular Usage and note the DATA mb stats. Make sure All apps are killed in the dock ( these are still active and running in RAM)

In the am check you usage and Cell Data MB.
