Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

This is interesting and agrees with my idea that the cause of the battery drain may temporarily disappear after a reset:

"[Apple employee at the Genius bar said] something is always running in the background of the iPhone 4S but it shouldn't be, this is whats causing the rapid battery drain. Even in Airplane Mode with everything switched off this thing which they are aware off carries on running and draining your battery.

No matter what you do you will not cure the problem. The best you can hope for is that the whatevers running in the background doesn't carry on doing so after you try turning you iphone off and back on but it will within a few hours (if your lucky) resume itself and continue rapidly draining your battery."

    http://forum.vodafone.co.uk/t5/iPhone-4S-and-iOS-5/iPhone-4S-Battery-Issues-Menu -Layout-Errors/m-p/933163

This is on the 23rd November, after iOS 5.0.1.  He also said (in the UK) Apple employees are not allowed to swap phones with battery issues anymore.

Complete opposite to my situation. My phone can last 24 hours of usage and standby on WiFi but as soon as I leave the house, the battery starts draining at around 10% per hour, on standby. If I were to use my phone continuously nonstop without WiFi, it would be completely drained in less than an hour.

Crazy.  Here it is 90 minutes later, and i'm still not on wi-fi, and I've only dropped 1% charge, down to 83%.

So there really is no rhymre or reason to this battery life fiasco.

Yes I will when the new phone arrives. This is so frustrating and not like Apple. The worst part is my wife has the same phone and has no issues with this. I have been having a hard time getting iCloud to work also. It will not sink to my iPhone to or from my home Mac and PC computers. The computers sink between each other okay but nothing to the iPhone 4s. I have done all the tricks suggested on this forum but to no avail.

some of us, though, have no alternative.  i must use wifi here at the home.  ATT coverage is so poor, that 3g is almost non existent.

here is my update....i am still getting only 2.5 to 3.0 hours per charge.  i lose 30 percent or more per hour, and must re charge 3-4 times per day.

one thing not a lot of people are thinking of, at this rate, i will need to replace the battery after 4 months and apple will charge me.  i am really ticked off about that.

<edited by host>  I received a phone call from "executive offices", although i suspect that it was.  in reality, it was a call center in Austin, Texas, and they were just making phone call appointments with tech or engineers for IOS battery problems.  Whatever.  I have a call from Apple tech tomorrow at noon.  Supposedly they will someone get into my phone (usb cable) and will try to see what is going on.  so be it.

i was also told by the representative today on the phone ( i am deleting icloud and also cancelling the extra storage, as maybe that is another problem) that 5.02 is delayed again and he thought it might just default to 5.1.  we shall see.

Im not too hopeful they will be able to find out anything tomorrow on the phone.  It may just be wait until an update and see what happens.  the deal is, ATT only will give me a refund for the first 30 days.  i am now at 15 days.  clock is ticking.

i may have to return the 4s, go back to my 4 which i have not sold yet, and wait it out.

    sigh

    Try this.

    Go to Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings

Hopefully it will help solve your wifi problem, which caused your phone to drain its battery.

If above does not help, go to your wireless router, change wifi network channel, switch it to manual (default is auto, and normally set to channel 13 for 2.4 Ghz band, and channel 161 on 5 Ghz band) ... on 2.4Ghz try between channel 1 to 13 ... settle for the channel that gives you best signal/speed. And for 5Ghz band... between channel 40 to 48 and 149 to 161. Once you have set the channels (make sure you dont have any wireless access point repeater... if you do, you need to check the channel of your repeater and set it the same as the main router), reboot your wireless router.

Above 2 steps should help your wifi propagating problem.

You see, when you are in a wifi environment with your iphone auto lock in a preset SSID, it will keep propagating to latch on to the wireless network. If your neighbours or any other wifi AP nearby are using the same channel, it will affect your own wifi network's signal, speed, etc... depending on the quality of your wireless router, some strong signals with the same channel from your neighbours or nearby could interfere with your wifi signal. In extreme cases, cause it to drop.

    Hope above helps...

    Ministermanlane,

Do you have WiFi Sync enabled on your phone?

    Davidblackman,

Your situation sounds much more severe than what most people are posting here.  I would return the phone and get another 4S and start a new 30 day period.

I actually reset the router and modem a little later this afternoon, and that has helped tremendously.

I do have it enabled, but up until this week i never had problems.  I reset the router and it seems better now.

I have been having disappointing battery with my Verizon 16 GB 4S, but I found some tricks that work really well, but still allow me to use basically all of the phone's awesome features (that we should be able to use anyway). I have been on 100% for two hours with only, but mind that I have only used the phone for 10 minutes. This far surpasses the predicted .5% an hour drop in stand-by.

    -Bluetooth off.

    -Wifi off.

    -ALL Puch Notifications off.

-Location services on for all apps that I need, but in "System Services", only Cell Network Search and Compass Calibration are on.

    -iCloud Back up off.

-iCloud syncs mail, contacts and calendar. Everything else is off, including "Find my iPhone".

-Mail set to fetch once an hour (Comcast, iCloud, and Yahoo).

Everything else is the way it was when the phone came.

This works great. No factory reset or restore necessary. I can go up to two days without charging.

When I use iphone 4 running os 5.0 iphone batterylife is good. But when those test battery of iphone 4s bad even when up to 5.0.1. Even 4s battery of insufficient capacity usually from 8 am to 5 pm
