Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

You are really really lucky! Congrats!

One more question though! Do you switch off 3g (cellular data) when you do not use it or when you are home where you have wifi?

    Hi enx23,

i have real bad feelings about the 4S - Apple tactics seems to be "sit & wait" for the Iphone 5.

According to this article i think there will not fix the hardware (how?), they will just change the phones for "bad users" like me. For the rest: no problem, no complaint, no change!

If the iOS 5.1 doesn't fix anything i will return both, for cash not for new phones. I don't want old bad hardware and pay the same price like for future Iphone 5.

Something on 5.1: if it is a software issue, they can change it, 2 Months is enough time. If not, it was a big lie about the hardware or...they are not able to fix software. This is the problem with this kind of information strategy.

i do not switch off anything. i use it the same when i am out and when i am home.... ie. bluetooth on, wifi on, 3G on, location services on for some apps, ... it just works.

i do have some battery issue on the first day when i got the 4S. but the issue went away after some tweeking.

Then it came back after i updated iOS 5.0.1 OTA.... did a restore via iTunes to 5.0.1.

drain it to empty, and charge it up ... twice. And i never had any problem ever since.

i find the battery life gets better and better.

Sometimes i charge my phone to 100% before i sleep because i put it on the charger earlier in the evening, and it was 100% before i sleep, so i unplugged it. When i wake up (about 6-7 hours later), battery is at 99%.

so i guess i am the lucky 99.93%

I have battery trouble too, but the drainage became better after doing a DFU restore via iTunes, setting it up as a new phone, and not doing a restore from a previous backup.

I now have a idle use battery drain of 1-2% an hour compared to the 3-5% I had before doing the restore. I still think the battery drain is way to big when using the iPhone, and also when it lie idle. I have followed the advice to switch of location services, Siri is off,  and other tweaks, but I don't feel it helps much. Whats the point in having this phone if I can't use the features?

I have also noticed that my iPhone feels warmer than it should when I pick it up, and it has been laying idle for a while. It seems to be busy with someting it shouldn't be busy with laying idle. Maybe this is normal for the iPhone, I don't know, it is my first iPhone.

I just hope it is a software problem with a solution, and not a hardware problem.

    Hello everyone,

just a short update from my side. I have an iPhones4s with battery drain about 4-5 % per hour with doing nothing. I have tried everything mentioned in this forum (reinstall, switch all services off, ...). Nothing really made a big difference. Of course, if I deactivate everything I get a few hours more, but this cannot be the solution. I am now using my phone in a normal way with everything on (icloud, apps, location, siri,...) and I get a little more than 24h out of the battery. That means I have to recharge it every day. My old iphone 4 lasted about 4 days with the same usage pattern.

Despite some users really having software bugs in ios 5, I think the problem lies in the baseband or micro-sim reader. I changed my sim card but with no effect. I also had to deactivate the sim pin to get a cellular network connection. To support my hypothesis, I recognized that my phone, althought it seems to be connected to the network, is unable to establish a call. I often have to dial 2-3 times to get a connection which is not usual on t-mobile germany.

Turnin off cellular data doesn't mean 3g is off.

It just cuts off all data connection period. Nothing else to it.

There is no option in 4s to turn off 3g- the phone chooses its signal automatically with a preference to lock itself to a 3g network if available. It does that even if the 3g signal available is lousy - and as a result draining the battery +  u'll get a poor call reception. There's a seperate thread on this issue N i hope i make thIs point extremely clear

Turning off cellular data <> 3g is off too

End of test 2, happy with this.

    D serial iPhone 4S.

    photo-2.png

Used the tweaks in this thread, and only enabled Wi-Fi when needed. No 3G use. An important note - I was locked on the 2G network. 5 bars here instead of the 1-2 bar 3G signal, which hammers battery.

No Bluetooth use, and Wi-Fi Search for Networks is disabled.

    - Phone calls, two FaceTime chats, video's recorded and watched, photo's taken, emails checked, app store browsed, music listened to (via headphone).

Next test, the same settings but with Wi-Fi on all the time.

This is my first Apple mobile phone, a always used Nokia but i decided to give it a try, so i bought the brand new Iphone4S

Im very very very disapointed with this battery issue, i cannot take advantage of my iphone´s capacity... i had to reduce the screen light at minimum, disable all kind of notifications, disable my iphone finder in case if o lose him...disable Siri,  reduce at minimum possible my internet usage... avoid making phone calls  etc etc, and even so my battery drains about 10% hour!!

Apple has to do something about this!!!

Hi, are you locked to 2g by choice or is there no 3g signal?

I got a new iPhone 4S the other day at the Apple Store and it dramatically increased battery life from about 3 hours per charge to 6. Then, I wondered what would happen if I turned my brightness down from full to 50%. After seeing the result, I think the change is here to stay:

    photo (3).PNG

My usage was watching the movie 2012 from start to end (2 hours and  37 minute long movie) and the rest a mix of 3G browsing (including downloading a 15MB app on 3G), 3D gaming and Hanging with Friends over 3G. All things considered, this points to a 10 hour battery life with mixed usage and high standby time which is a fair bit above Apple specs, believe it or not. As you can see, I have not plugged in my iPhone since the last full charge. I have also done little to save the battery. For example:

    1. Wifi is permanantly ON, even when not connected. However, Ask to Join Networks is OFF.

    2. Bluetooth is OFF.

    3. Cellular Data is permanantly on, no exceptions.

    4. I tend to fluctuate between 3-5 bars of 3G where I live, usually around 4. I have WiFi on around 16 hours of the day (I turn it off at night) and its signal fluctuates between 1 and 3 bars out of 3.

    5. All Location Services are ON.

    6. All default Notifications are ON (except Calendars which curiously increased my battery life when disabled) plus Words, Hanging and Chess with Friends only.

    7. E-mail is set to Manual.

    8. WiFi sync is ON, iCloud is ON (Push) but won't download over 3G and Facetime and iMessage are both ON.

    9. As I previously mentioned, Brightness is and will now stay at 50%.

All in all, hope is not lost for battery life, people

My serial number begins C39GN9 for those who were wondering. My old phone was also a C39G.

Wonder if I could turn off some of the things you guys are turning off (WiFi, Cellular Data, iCloud, WiFi sync, Location Services etc.) and push for 15 hours

This is my phone with wifi off and cellular data on:

And here WIFI is off and cellular data is off, and the 3G symbol is gone, but it is still using the 3G network?

Strange, I was playing music via the iPhone 4S's speakers for like 30 minutes and it didn't even loose 1%

Is it only in certain regions where this problem is occuring?
