Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

    Reading the latest 35 posts or so, my battery has gone down 4%!!!! On WiFi!! It would drain even faster without it!!

    Thanks!

    This (i.e. iPhone 4S always uses 3g network even if Cellular Data is off) might explain many of the cases of the battery drain and the phantom drain!!!

    Hi TomoK12,

    Was it fully charged when you started ( 100% ) playing your music?

    The iphone takes a lot longer to drop from 100 to 99 than from 99 to 98 with the same usage.

    I'm currently investigating the battery drop under 'idle load'  and turned OFF as compared to 'Idle load' and ON.

    Today I tested usage under idle load and turned ON : meaning I just left the phone on with the home screen showing and monitoring the battery drop under 'idle usage'. All background apps were closed and push email was off. It was connected to my home wifi.  Everytime the screen dropped brightness I would press it and it would jump back to full brightness again. I started to measure when I saw the first 1 percent drop until the second 1 percent drop. I consistently found out it would use 4-5 minutes per 1 percent drop.

    Then I took my 3GS and did the same thing. It also showed 1 percent drop per 4-5 minutes 'idle usage'. So , it was connected to wifi and only showed the home screen with brightness at the same setting as my 4S ( about 75 percent ). Everytime it would want to jump into sleep mode I'd press the screen again to hold it into this 'idle usage' state.

    To my surprise the 3GS had the same numbers : so about 4-5 minutes per 1 percent battery drop. I tried this several times over different ranges of battery percentages. All the same. It shows the battery percentage view is more linear than I first thought. The only thing that is noticeable is the drop from 100 to 99. It takes a lot longer than any other drop.

    I also tested 'idle usage' with homescreen viewable under 3G : I got roughly the same numbers on my 3GS and 4S. So 4-5 minutes per 1 percent battery drop when doing nothing with the phone, only keeping the homescreen active.

    Now I'm wondering what other users are seeing under this 'idle usage'? Just make sure push email is off.

    Regards.

    Here is my results on 5.1 with light to medium usage for a day, a majority of it was a 2 hour call, facebook, texts and other 3G related stuff. My unit's serial also starts with C3, This has to be the best time I have gotten. Normally on 5.0.1 I get close to 5 hours with light to medium usage barely any calls and standby is usually outstanding with a little over 2 days on days I barely use my 4S. Im moving on to day 2 testing to see how standby is. Granted this is only Beta 1 but this looks like some very nice usage if they could actually get it to 10 hours of usage that would be perfect/more than acceptable.

    How's the battery life going for you?
    Has it gotten any better with the beta update?

    On a Sprint iPhone 4S running OS 5.01.  Also having terrible battery life problem. For example: Today: 100% charge at 9am.  now 11:08 AM and down to 43% charge.  NO usage and NO apps open.  Apple, please fix this problem.

    Acctualy I know why iPhone 4S isn't have a good battery life as iPhone 4, despite others, the main problem is the lack of possible to shut down 3G network. I always use the 3G off, and when need data, turn on. This make my iPhone 4 battery good for 5 or more days!

    I hope apple bring back in OS 5.1 this possibility....

    @eduluizfilho99

    Indeed iPhone 4S is unable to turn off the 3G even if the Celular Data is set to off or even if the 3G network is too busy. Also even if one is connected to Wifi when the iPhone 4S goes in standby mode it will ignore the Wifi and use 3G for data transmission (email checks, etc.).

    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3385464?start=270&tstart=0

    No wonder the iOS 5.0.x and/or iPhone 4S drains the battery so fast. In this case the battery drainage can be influenced by factors like how busy is the 3G network, how good is the coverage of 3G network for each iPhone user, etc. For now it is not clear if the 3G chip from iPhone 4s allows one to switch off the 3G (it looks like is set on automatic).

    Day 48: No solution, no apple statement (iOS 5.1 beta 2 released today, "fix of photo stream", no word about the battery), keep waiting. The brick still swigs energy.

    Third test, same as before but leaving Wi-Fi on, the battery is draining a lot faster, even in standby.

    Need those fast toggle buttons

    Couldn't take the battery life issue any more, so I made an appointment with the Genius bar today on 5th Ave, had my phone hooked up to some diagnostic app, and the "Genius" told me that my iPhone was operating "within acceptable parameters."    I was like: "wha??  Unused, with zero apps open, my iphone loses 1% of battery life every 3 minutes!  That means it will be dead within 5 hours with no use on a full charge.  sooner if I actually use it. How is that acceptable?".

    He shrugged and mentioned that I should "reset my expectations" vis-a-vis the iPhone's battery life.

    @Jason

    Don't take no for an answer. Seriously. That's way below the standby stats listed on Apple's official website.

    If i read something like that - it is better to ask my wife to return the phones, i'm not able to act appropriate at the genius bar.
