Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

On iphone 4s, 3G can't turned. because they are the dual carrier.

That dual carrier talk has no founding whatsoever.

    Think about it.

I have a 4S, and it will choose a 3G upon detecting the carrier (O2 in the UK). When the 3G signal becomes very weak during a call (as it does in my area), the phone will automatically switch to 2G, in which I get full bars.

So, the 4S is capable of switching bwteen 3G and 2G. The functionality exists.

Adding a user toggle requires no more software than already exists (excluding the UI aspect, which is a different context).

I've figuired out how to switch from 3G to 2G manually, without a UI toggle. I call 443 (voicemail) and put my phone in a metal case. When I take it out a few seconds later, it's reverted back to 2G. This gives me much better battery performance due to the poor 3G at my home area.

So, you CAN toggle it. Adding a UI button requires no additional technical code. I used to be a phone developer by the way, so I know a fair bit about the separation between hardware/software and automatic/user functionality.

Not to mention the new $99 charge developers have to pay to develop on iOS 5.

Apple really know how to rinse both consumers and developers.

Please, could you explain more what do you mean with "dual carrier"!

As far as I understand it is not clear if the 3G (which is implemented in the chip MDM6610) can be turned off via software. It looks for now that the chip MDM6610 decides automatically by itself when to switch between 2G and 3G. The chip MDM6610 is quite new and for now it is used only in iPhone 4S. More info about it is here:

I really hope that this is possible to be done by software also and there is no hardware issue (e.g. chip MDM6610) which blocks this. If this is possible to be done by software than I am sure that if Apple does not offer the user toggle then jailbreaking it will do it!

I must try this! After this for how long does your iPhone stay connected to 2G network?

course it will automatically switch 3g to 2g, so more consume the battery . I mean 4s no button turned manual 3G.

Enx - The carrier does not tell the iPhone to switch. The iPhone switches the signal provided by the carrier. The intelligence (as such) and functionality is within the iPhone.

It will stay on 2G indefinately, until the carrier is detected again (i.e. phone rebooted).

I agree with the poster who said that Apple removed the toggle to make sure people were on 3G to use Siri. Too much of a 'functional requirement coincidence' for me :¬)

    @RossPhoto & enx23

I think the initial setting of the chip is to connect in fastest mode (3G) and not in the slowest - without 3G, no Siri.

The chip is connected via I2C/SPI to the mainboard for communication and settings - it would be possible to put the switch on it, but you will turn also Siri off.

Too much obsessing with what we can turn off to make the phone work like it should with everything on........   Maybe we are spoiled here in New England, but 3G service is strong just about everywhere and there's no need for toggling.   I quickly tired of turning stuff off and on to try and squeeze extra minutes out of my phone.   In the end, with EVERTHING ON except Siri lift to activate, I can easily get through an average day.   I just charge at night and am fine with the phone as

@Tam - Yes indeed. Although when there is no 3G connection, Siri still runs (but reports no connection), so as before, the functionality is already there.

@Jameson - if your connection is great, good for you (seriously), but it's not for many others :¬)

Yes, I know. I even wrote previously that this functionality is provided by the chip MDM6610.

I tried and I was able to force my iPhone 4S to connect to 2G/EDGE. It stayed connected to 2G/EDGE for two minutes and afterwards it connected back to 3G.

Do you have the Siri off?
