Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

    Sorry to hear that :¬(

I was hoping it may have been an obscure setting that helped the issue.

I agree with HyperXism. I'm on my 2nd iPhone 4S and the battery issues are gone. There may be some software issues, too, but there was definitely a hardware issue with mine.

I agree with HyperXism too. It's hardware. I restored mine and my wife's iphones from same backup. Her phone 60-70 percent by the end of the day. Mine 0-20. Mine got warmer.  More or less same usage. I returned mine and ordered new one. I don't want to have referb exchange. And I have 30 more days to try new one.  I give apple one more chance, if not I try Android or.... Windows phone :-). And... If I need a heater I buy one. Apple I don't need app for this.

I have to agree, i really dont get why people are sitting back and hoping Apple will fix it, my first 4S heated up and dropped battery, i went straight back to the shop the next day, i was within the 14day exchange so got a brand new one. And not seen the problem since. Cant understand why people are trying tip after tip after tip when clearly some phones have the problem and others dont... just change the phone for another one. If Apple has not fixed it by now, months after the release of the phone, chances are this is as good as it gets and you just need a new phone. If it was purely a software issue, all phones would do it, maybe its a software/hardware combination, but either way, not all phones do it, and based on the total 4s sales, most do not do it, hence, get another one that doesnt do it

You usage specs are nothing short of amazing. In fact, the screenshot you posted on your site shows the greatest usage/standby time I have ever seen on this thread... it may even be Guiness worthy. It may even convince me to buy an iPhone... just a joke

Can you please give precisions as to the following:

-How many mail accounts do you have, do you use exchange, and about how many mails do you receive daily?

-Can you confirm you don't use any calendaring functions?

-You don't use cloud storage components, do you use something with comparable functionality? i.e. a dropbox etc.

-Do you use FB, Twitter or any social networking app and do you have notifications set for that?

-You imply you cure your network connection, do you use airplane mode or cellular data off when you don't use the browser? Can you further detail what you mean by "using services only when needed" or is that really about the network connection as stated.

-In your 7-10 hours of use, what is the percentage of that that relates to web browsing?

I'd say "good luck" but it seems you no longer need that lollll.

    Take care!

I have to state, I'm not a phone addict. I don't sit there are play games, or search the web needlessly. I only use phones when I need to :¬)

I've been routinely checking mail manually about 5-6 times a day. The next test is to put the phone on a 15 minute fetch and see how it compares.

One exchange account, which I only use to synch Google Calendar. Two mail accounts; business (IMAP) and Gmail (native).

No cloud services/storage bar Find my iPhone and contact synch (handy). It's no hassle to synch with iTunes to manage music and photos.

Nope, no notifications set for social apps.

Using services when needed means 3G and Wi-Fi. Although in my latest test, Wi-Fi was left on all the time (in my home, strong signal). I have forced the use of the 2G network by putting the iPhone in a metal bin (hah!) while making a call to voicemail. I do this because my 3G signal at home is poor (1-2 bars), and drains the battery. Hence I'd like that 3G toggle :¬)

Out of the 7 hours, I'd say 2 was on safari, possibly less. As I said, I'm at my Mac all day, and I only use the browser for testing or when downstairs (I also opt for the iPad to browse the net when at home).

The final battery test (next), is to use 3G only, disable Wi-Fi, and use the iPhone for all email and net searches.  That will be the interesting test :¬)

I've had my 4S since around Oct 20th, don't remember the exact date. I don't think it has been 60 days yet. I do have Apple Care. Can I go exchange my iPhone 4S for another 4S without paying the $45 replacement fee? After all, if it's a hardware problem, it IS a factory issue and should be under warranty. Am I wrong?

Also to add, I close apps after using them, except Phone and Messages.

update. disable my cellular data and wi-fi at 7.15 am with 63% of battery and now at 17.24 pm i have 44%. 1 day and 8 hours after last charge.

do you think this is good? cellular data seems to be extremely consuming.

Thank you for the details! This really confirms my opinion that these phones (not only the iPhone) cannot be considered as "little computers" or a computer replacement of sorts AND have a 1+day battery life. Socialite usage is also not recommended i.e. social networking apps with fast notifications and crack-addiction-like-peek-change-status every 2 mins on the phone.

Thank you, that was very instructive.

    Tc.

btw it also comforts me in the idea that there is still room for feature phones. I can see one that does only mail, social networking(fb, twitter, tumblr etc) and has a browser - to **** with apps - and has full user control of the 3G radio, is 1.5 times as thick as these phones, and with 4''3, so as to do better in media playback while accomodating a bigger battery. And it has no location services and demands of the user that he knows which city he lives in for timezone purposes lolll.

    You're welcome.

Thankfully (for my battery), I can't stand social networking. Something I do (sporadically) out of necessity rather than enjoyment :¬)

I'll ask you but anyone can reply.

My friend has an iPhone. I can't stand being around him because every minute his phone vibrates or does some annoying noise or such - I gather because of FB notifications and mail and such.

My question is: can notifications be set in a way as to not make the phone vibrate/make a sound nor wake it from dimmed screen standby i.e. they would pile up on the screen and when you touch or use the phone again you would see them at that time? Seems that's the way I'd want to use it.

You can turn vibration off and set specific notification tones to 'none' all in the sound settings... This is the iPhone battery thread btw... You'd be better served creating a new thread or searching for appropriate one in forum

I have had my 4s since early November and things with the battery were ok, not as good as my old blackberry but not that bad, until last night that it. I went to bed with my phone at 95%, only to wake up this morning with it in the red and virtually flat. I have charged it this afternoon, and after 4 hours of not even using the phone once, it's down to 69%

What is going on, this is crazy, I have everything turned off now and still it's falling like mad. This can't be right, I have never had an i phone before and unless a fix is released quickly, I'm afraid it will just have to go, which is a shame as other than the battery, I love the phone!

    Mark..
