Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

I didn't know about the static issue, and I have it too. I can clearly hear the noice, I don't have a clue what it means though:-) What consequences does it have?

It means that is a hardware issue which I doubt that it can be solved with a software update.

Also it means that it can affect the connection of the iPhone 4S to the network and also the data transmission which means furhter that maybe the iPhone 4S has to spend more energy to to fix the errors in the transmission due to the static interference.

Also sometime the static issue can manifest itself during the phone calls. If one hears static noise during his/her phone call on iPhone 4S, most likely is because of the static issue!!!!

Ok, thanks. I'm beginning to wonder what Apple has sold me for $840, not the premium quality I expected. It's worse enough with the battery drain issues I have.

Well I have noticed a huge difference since I upgraded from the iPhone 4. Went to bed on 99% wake up 7 hours later on 73%. Which shouldn't happen. And this is with most things turned off and I didn't pay for something I have to turn everything off.

This is only my experience, i don't know if can help someone.

I got 2 times abnormal battery usage with my iphone 4s, and for abnormal i mean going from 100% full recharge to near 0% in half a night of standby (with wifi/bluethooth/localization/push --> off and no app active in multitask bar).

All the 2 times i did a syncronizzation with my windows iTunes with some app updating.

Before disconnecting i usually click on the icon near the phone name that close the connection and then i turn off iTunes.

Really i don't know if something wrong happened to me but 2 on 2 is enough, yesterday i did sync on purpose and then reboot my iphone4s.. today i'm at 39% with 1day-15hours of standby and 4hour,34min of utilizzation.. that seems good to me (i really don't remember i did 4 hour of utilizzation but.. well.. ok.. after 1 day and 15hours maybe i did).

So if you ask me today i think they have a bug that fire on some sync operation and start something that run all the time (also in standby) killing my battery.... 100%-->0% in half a night of standby have nothing to do with "optimization".

Myself and another colleage have both got iPhones, mine is an iPhone 4 and his an iPhone 3G. We have both seen a problem with the battery, but he has found out something which I failed to notice. It would appear that the speed at which the battery drains is dependant on our physical location.

When at work - which is effectively a metal construction building our battery drains from full charge to about 30% or less without making any calls or texts during the day.

When at home and in relatively clear unobstructed countryside the phone is still at 80% at the end of the day.

This makes me wonder if the phone is effectiving ramping up it's signal reception / transmission to compensate for poor signal and hammering the battery as a consequence.

If this "clever" auto adjustment was introduced with IOS 5 it would certainly explain the problem and why some people suffer more than others ?

Has anyone seen this - can we confirm it's as much to do with the enviroment (signal strength etc) as the phone itself ?

    Dave,

I confirm your observation - me too have this problem when I'm at home...

This piece of lemon will drain about 35% on standby overnite

At work, I notice that it is draining at a slower rate.

However, my 3g signal is extremely poor at home .....  most of the time hovering around 1-2 bar..

Can't even make a decent phonecall........

But there are locations will full 3G signal - but no internet connection. I notice this lemon drains faster in such location too...

I have good reception with 3G where I mostly use my iPhone 4s, but it still looses battery too fast. I usually have 4 bars, on other phones(nokia and sony ericsson) in the family the reception is always full. The iPhone tends to switch between 3 - 5 bars. I haven't used it on the move so much yet, but I will try to observe if the battery drains even faster in worse reception areas.

At this point I'm note sure which signal might be the problem, it could be 3G, WiFi or even getting a Satellite Lock for Location services. Working in a all metal box could mess up all of these.

    Thanks

hey guys again .. after getting some suggestions I have turned off Diagnostics&Usage + Location-Based iAds + Setting Time Zone..... I also have from before(see picture above) turned off Cellular data + Photo Stream + Bluetooth.. here are my results (see below) I also want to mention that I have charged fully my phone at 15:00 yesterday ..... and as you can see from the picture its 13:12 with 8 hours usage and 22 hours standby.. thats strange! Anyhow I have gained 1 extra hour by turning off Diagnostics&Usage + Location-Based iAds + Setting Time Zone..

I just checked and it appears I have the static bug as well.

This is my first iPhone and it's really being a /facepalm experience so far.

Nearly 800 € here in Italy for a (beatiful) record battery drainer... that even has huge incompatibility with some providers  (Wind, here) even if "unlocked".

Not good, not good at all.

And by the way, a month ago the Apple Store said "wait, 5.0.2 will fix this and is coming in a week".

    Oh, really?

I Apple reckon is not going to do anything about the battery issue at all. They just going to sit there and suck out money from consumers at this rate.

Had I known about the battery problem I wouldn't have gotten the iphone 4S in the first place.

Perfect, or at least much better. Here is a report of my second night with the changes I posted. The phone went down to 1% per hour. To be exact, 2am 73% battery and at 8.22am I have 66%. After the changes it looks like the phone needs to go through one or two discharges and it levels it battery consumption a bit. I will probably have the same results you did of 1 day standby and 8 or more usage hours. I will top off the battery and post when I get it down to 1 percent to see the difference.

I will be waiting for your results! I hope you get around the same or more standby and usage hours than me!
