Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

Sorry if I miswrote my post. I just found what was wrong with my phone and decided to share it. I had the Huge issue of 100 percent drained in 4 hours. I did not find a software or hardware fix, I just got excited that I have a working phone now after this changes.

    Abay84

Great to read that it helped.

That’s the most likely issue. Something is over using or over activating the wireless chipset. There might also be a memory usage of the device or processor usage as a result of it as well. We might never know as apple is somewhat secretive.

The fix for the 4 hour drain:

Go to general, setting, check if under usage you have the same time in standby than in usage. If so, do the following:

Your phone is probably searching for mail every second. If your using Exchange server, you have the same problem I had. Turn it to check every 15 minutes.

Also, go to general, date and time, and set automatically to off

If that fixes the usage, your set. You can also:

Check if Icloud, Find my phone or another email is the issue.

If that fails, turn off Siri, check that you don’t have to many open programs, that’s by pressing the round button twice and closing the open programs.

Do a hard reboot, both top and round pressed till you get the restart.

After a few of the following changes on my phone, the first battery drain was 3% per hour.  The second was 1% per hour. I do have bluetooth on, I have exchange server checking every 15 minutes and I do “Use and abuse” the phone by talking a lot and searching the web.  Whatever was wrong is something that keeps checking the internet.

(I don’t work for Apple, I don’t know the programming, I’m just helping the frustrated, as I was, to fix their phones.)

If you have the 10 hour drain:

It’s a smaller error of the above. You probably don’t have exchange server issue but have something that keeps the phone busy. It might be another email account that has a similar error,  Try the list above for starters, emails at push are usually the issue.

**Remember, the whole thing that’s wrong is something is checking the internet way to frequently and turning everything off is not the solution. It’s just eliminating the electric usage of what you turned off so it lasts just a tad longer. I do use the wifi, not frequently, I never turn off the Bluetooth and talk a lot. It should last all day at least. It should get better with an Apple fix, but at least your able to work all day with the phone till then.

Unfortunately, your genius friend is wrong on this.   iOS5 has caused the same problem on iPhone 4 and 3Gs models as well as the new 4s.....    That evidence alone, makes it impossible that it's a hardware problem.

Sorry Jameson but that logic does not stand on its own!  That example just shows that iOS 5 has bugs and nothing else!!! It does not exclude that iPhone 4S might have hardware issues which combined with iOS 5 bugs gives a very nasty combination!

Have you checked your iPhone 4S for the static noise issue (which is a hardware issue) which affects 80% of the iPhone 4S?

I just got off the phone with Apple and their tech stated it's a software update that Apple is hoping to release in the coming weeks.

I did find that turning off most location services and also turning off "find my phone" has helped. Still not where it should be and I shouldn't have to turn those things off but is a work around for now.

That's exactly what this thread is :¬)

Apple dev's will be watching this thread, it's a means to get lots of additional user feedback and bug reports very quickly. They won't make that known, of course, as it would entail having to reply to hundreds of questions, something they are not employed to do.

The best thing we can do is report back positive findings here, and post complaints/feedback to the offoficla apple page: http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

And make your voice heard here, because we should have this functionality, and should have had it years ago.

I received mine in the mail from Sprint, charged one time about 1pm yesterday and have received one phone call and 10-20 emails setup through Exchange, Yahoo and have WiFi connected. The usage stats say 2 hours, 41 minutes and standby says 22 hours 46 minutes since the last and only charge.

    My thoughts exactly.

Everyone here (including myself) has become a tester when we have heard nothing from Apple.

I stopped stressing and returned my phones (all 3 had various problems in addition to battery issue).

Well you can call it an unfortunate coincidence, or believe whatever conspiracy theory you wish.   When I see a problem that crosses many models of phones (and iPads), with the only common element being iOS5, logic and common sense tells me where to point the finger of blame.
