Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

I got my iphone 4s just 2 days ago and i'm so disappointed with this battery issue... This afternoon i experienced troubles on receiving calls, needed a reboot to work... Battery has the same problems that everyone reported, i'll try that fix  in the thread.....

I think the most effective way is turning off push mail.. That may seem to help a little..

Backup first just in case. But the reset all data does not dump your data and apps. Follow the process precisely and once completed you will have to set back up any wi-fi networks, your who you are to siri and your email signature.  You can do that before you run down your battery FYI. Most everything else stays intact. Good luck

I did that already and i hope it helps.... I'll turn off push too, i've thought about it this afternoon, before searching for help here.

I also hope the issues with Wi-Fi get better.. Thanks for replying

And Apple should include manual selection of networks. The auto network detection just drains alot of batt. From 3G going to 2G and continously searching for 3G on the background..

My current ios 5.0.1 is 9A405, but people here are talking about 9A406. When I check for software updates it states that I have the most current software. Is that correct? What am I missing here?

I heard that the "battery update" was a update for an embarrassing flaw in the app security.

Wow. Nice usage there. Mind to share how you did it? Did you just downloaded firmware, then reset as new phone then applied 'fixes'?

I have yet to try to reset as new phone.

Even the most excellent of contributions must come to an end... so hereby ends mine lolll. I've been following this thread since page 128 when it was barely at 100k hits and it's been quite a ride!! I learned a lot about the iPhone and I was even able to put together my knowledge base thread (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3526981) which will stand I'm sure as the greatest contribution a non-iPhone user ever made to this part of the forum - in any case superior to any contribution I've seen a multi-level/point user ever make here or about (btw thanks to all who tried to help, as my thread is simply a grouping of those contributions). I haven't even given myself points in my own thread lolll, unlike others. I remain a proud "0". Proud to be the opposite of those lolll. I've also had many interesting exchanges with many of you - greetings to miless, 3dmac, bleepingApple, ross, enx, tamarillo, Mark Posner and others I can't remember. Being off-topic never got in my way. Don't you worry I'm not going to repeat my famous stance on support and how I would change Apple's corporate culture, user forum, PR, iPhone options and form factor, and patent practices, or my famous advice on how to feel secure or about text neck. I'm also happy I got to challenge and undo quite a few lifestyle advocates and distortion peddlers who would argue against merchantability and deny others the right to have fair value for what they paid for while talking down and adopting a condescending and arrogant stance - I'm happy to find that most iPhone users are not like those! Overall it was fun!

So I wish you Happy Holidays

    and a good iPhone!

Go to settings>Location Services>and at the bottom select System Services>and turn off diagnostics and usage, location-based iads, SETTING TIME ZONE(this is the real killer), and traffic. Also, let your phone's battery drain all the way to zero so it turns off by it self. Do this a couple of times (the first time I did it, my phone stayed at 100% for about one or so hours longer than before.) this should help.

    I am gonna miss you.

Happy Holidays, and may you have a great and glorious season for the most wonderful time of the year.

    Merry Christmas!

I may start opening another can of worms here, but.....what the heck!

The iMessage bug is seriously bugging me, and a lot of people i am sure. Enough to make me turn off iMessage all together.

Oh how Apple will miss Stevie J .... and let's see how long the $80b will last now that AAPL is rumoured to be starting to distribute dividends.

I guess all great empire will come to an end someday.

Ditto IBM, ditto Sony, ditto MS (not yet,... but...), ditto RIM, ditto HP, ditto GM (almost)....

Maybe i am just a little disappointed with the way iOS 5 was rushed out....

Just dont lose your iPhone 4/4S if you have iMessage enabled.

This is decent/normal right? I'm on my 2nd charge. (Bought phone Dec 17, its now Dec 21) (See page 500 for my 1st day)

This is with fairly heavy use with music (mostly), internet, texting, camera, downloading and playing with apps, a long phone call, Siri use.

This is pretty bad compared to iPhone 4 or iPhone 3GS (with iOS 4.3) BUT it is in (top) line with what other report for iPhone 4S here in the forum.

So in the end it depends on you (cheaper iPhone 4 with better battery life or more expensive iPhone 4s with a much shorter life)!

Note: It looks to me that you are not using 3G network (there is a hardware issue in all iPhone 4S related to 3G) which might explain why you are in the top part of what people are reporting here!

    Hi!

Sorry if someone already posted it, but I've just found some interesting article from ZDNet (http://www.zdnet.com/blog/hardware/test-suggests-iphone-battery-issue-not-a-hard ware-problem/16250), from which I got this excerpt:

"The app developer wanted to see if it was a hardware issue so he backed up both phones and factory reset both of them. He then restored each device with the different backup. The phone that originally had the battery problem was restored with software from the phone that didn't have a battery problem, the phone that didn't have the battery problem was restored with software from the phone that did have the battery problem. If the battery problem was caused by hardware, the same phone that had the battery problem would still have the problem, right? That wasn't the case. Instead, the battery problem jumped phones through software."

Well, the author indeed points out that this is a one sample test, but it appears to make sense anyway.

This is old news! This test just shows that there are software bugs in iOS 5.X.X and does not exclude the hardware issue which majority of all iPhone 4S have it and which affects the 3G hardware.

In the above test most likely both iPhone 4S have the hardware issue in the 3G part but one software has the settings off for 3G (i.e. cellular data here) and the other has it on. In this way when you swap the software from one iPhone to another you get exactly the same effect!

Because it took so long and we have not heard anything from Apple it looks to me like this hardware issue cannot be fixed by software updates. I guess that we will see soon a major recall and/or class action suits!

    Hello,

mine is nearly exactly the same:

Wifi: ON (Slept in a room with wifi)

    Bluetooth: OFF

    iCloud: Fotostream on, others OFF

    GoogleMail Account

Exchange Account for contacts (no push, manual fetch)

System Location Services: OFF, others on

I'm not sure but it looks like the 5.0.1 Build 6 works better for me. I4S 32 GB
