Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

My battery life before 9A406 was terrible as well...

I did NOT restart iPhone or did a complete restore.Just updated to 9A406 with everything on (Location services... icloud (contacts only)... and so on)

    Battery life improved extremely. !

This morning I had 99%, 23min usage and 10hrs standby    (no airplanemode during the night)

^^ pretty good in my eyes!

Indeed it looks good but one should not forget that going from 100% to 99% takes the longest time (~4 hours on standby) and it is not the same like going from 67% to 66%.

Anyway, let us know about 24 hours what is the situation!

    Merry Christmas!

I have a problem with my 4s also:

    - WIFI off

    - Bluetooth off

    - Location Services off

    Usage: 1 Hour, 43 Minutes

    Standby: 18 Hours, 19 Minutes

    Battery currently at 64%

Should I send my iPhone in to Apple? I already requested the return box but if this usage is normal, I probably have to live with this . Let me know guys whether I should keep or send in the phone.

    Regards,

    Michael

This is pretty bad compared to iPhone 4 or iPhone 3GS (with iOS 4.3) BUT it is in (top) line with what others report for iPhone 4S here in the forum.

So in the end it depends on you. The choices are:

    1) get a cheaper phone like for example Android phones which has the approximately the same battery life like iPhone 4S (plenty of settings off for iPhone 4S and plenty of settings on for Android)

    2) get a cheaper iPhone 4 (with iOS 4.3) with much better/longer battery life then iPhone 4S

    3) keep the more expensive iPhone 4s  with a much shorter life (with a lot of settings off)

It would be great if people who have solved the battery issue, upload a backup of the iphone without issues, to let people try to solve battery issues just restoring from the backup..

It would be perfect if restoring from a non issue backup, solve all of our problems..!!

I do not think that this is a good idea! Plenty of personal information can be extracted and used for bad purposes from these backups!

    I advice against doing this!

    Which information?

could be possible to do a backup without saving any personal info?

Think about it.. if the guy that restored a faulty iphone with a backup of his non faulty iphone, solved the battery issue, just having a good backup without personal information uploaded to a server to let everybody download it and try... can solve a lot of problems!!

and it would help a lot of people that need to have a better battery life and cannot wait until Apple do something..

I agree fully with you. Indeed iOS 5.X.X. has many bugs (not only one bug) which affect the battery life.

BUT also iPhone 4S have also hardware issues (bad electronic components) regarding the 3G network. This is not clear if it can be fixed with a software update or not! It looks to me that we will see a recall for iPhone 4S.

apple will solve it with a software update

I hope so but I do not think so! Too long time (more than two months) has passed without any software update which is fixing the battery issues for good!

    Hi!

Sorry if someone already posted it, but I've just found some interesting article from ZDNet (http://www.zdnet.com/blog/hardware/test-suggests-iphone-battery-issue-not-a-hard ware-problem/16250), from which I got this excerpt:

"The app developer wanted to see if it was a hardware issue so he backed up both phones and factory reset both of them. He then restored each device with the different backup. The phone that originally had the battery problem was restored with software from the phone that didn't have a battery problem, the phone that didn't have the battery problem was restored with software from the phone that did have the battery problem. If the battery problem was caused by hardware, the same phone that had the battery problem would still have the problem, right? That wasn't the case. Instead, the battery problem jumped phones through software."

Well, the author indeed points out that this is a one sample test, but it appears to make sense anyway.

This is old news! This test just shows that there are software bugs in iOS 5.X.X and does not exclude the hardware issue which majority of all iPhone 4S have it and which affects the 3G hardware.

In the above test most likely both iPhone 4S have the hardware issue in the 3G part but one software has the settings off for 3G (i.e. cellular data here) and the other has it on. In this way when you swap the software from one iPhone to another you get exactly the same effect!

Because it took so long and we have not heard anything from Apple it looks to me like this hardware issue cannot be fixed by software updates. I guess that we will see soon a major recall and/or class action suits!

I do not know! I want a good iPhone 4S and I do not have time to hack or check if this is possible or not!

iPhone 4S has also hardware issues and a software backup probably will not fix these.

updated to 9A406 and I have also noticed a difference instead of going from 100% to 70% over night on standby, It's going to 98%. And using it during the day the same amount before the update and it's lasting alot longer. Happy from what I see so far.

Just sent in two first generation iPod Nano due to battery faults.

But my new iPhone 4s is cooking! I have switched off ALL applications but the battery drains to 0 in less than 4 hours with a burning hot phone!

This behaviour only started in last a few days and I had the phone since late October. Unless this is a major battery manufactory issue I would suspect some sort of software issue. So come on Apple fix it for us!
