Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

    I wonder how many people are seeing improvements in 9A406 because of the setting up as a new phone, rather than the incremental update itself.

    Did those people who upgraded to 06 try a clean install and new phone set-up of 05?

    Did those who tried 06 and saw no benefit restore from a previous backup?

    I think that doing a total reset directly with the iphone to erase all data, and then doing a backup with itunes, will make a good backup without any personal info.

    I'm not saying that this will fix all iphones, but could be usefull for those people that probably have some corrupted files or something similar, that may cause the fast battery drain..

    I'm just trying to help..

    I have a 16gb 4S and I'm not having the issue of 20% of battery drain in a standby hour, but I'm not happy with my battery..

    I hope Apple will fix the problems with 5.1, but if not, what will Apple do?

    They shall give the option of change our faulty 4S for a perfect Iphone 4 plus giving us the price difference.

    Sorry for my english, i'm from spain..

    One other thing to note, I left multiple apps open over the last two nights to test to see if they drained battery.

    Wifi and 3G disabled. Mail = manual/fetch. iCould backups OFF.

    Apps: Mail, Messages, Settings, App Store, Reminders, Notes, Photos, PDF Reader

    * Night one: 8hr standby, 5 min use - 3% drop

    * Night two: 9hr standby, 5 min use - 3% drop

    In short: no they don't. Very good. Then again, multitasking in iOS is not concurrent apps running, rather, the applications close but the state in which they were last used are kept.

    I would still close 'large apps', such as games or astronomy software, purely for the free memory.

    Part of the 5 min usage may be Find My iPhone, which is enabled.

    Wonder if those out there who continue to have battery issues will report what carrier you have. And those who have done the 9A406 update what carrier you have and how did it effect your battery.

    You write that Wifi and 3G (I guess that you meant Celullar data) are off. Also you write that 5 minutes usage is because of "Find my iPhone"!!! As far as I know Find My iPhone needs internet connection like Wifi and Cellular data which you have disabled! Most likely "Find My iPhone" is not even launched when Wifi and Cellular data are disabled!!!!

    Markbusinsky, You can do the reset mentioned in another thread  "Reset all settings". Then  setup as new phone. That does not actually blow it totally out, it keeps your apps and data. Only a few items need to be added back such as wifi networks, who you are to siri, etc. Its a quick easy process and has helped a lot of users if followed exactly. Below is the excerpt from Davidch who found this solution:

    1. Reset all settings (settings app-> general-> reset)

    2 a. Go through initial setup steps (lang, wifi, siri, enable location, etc) and choose setup as new phone (don't worry your apps, data, contacts, mail will still be there). Do NOT restore from iCloud or iTunes (It can copy back corrupt settings)

    2 b. If you do not get the complete new setup screen with language setup and setup as new phone or restore from iTune/iCloud backup, be sure to go back to #1 and reset all settings again (it should happen the second time)

    3. Turn off system location services timezone and iAd (settings -> location services -> system services)

    4. Fully discharge battery (until you get the spinning wheel and it shuts off)

    5. Fully recharge battery (overnight if possible)

    In my experience this improves the Standby battery drain issue significantly in most cases.  It reduces drain from 2-4% or more per hr to 0.5% or less. It has worked for many, many users now. If it does not work after a few try's you may have a real battery or hardware issue and should contact Apple.  Good Luck!

    Its only available through iTunes. If you do the restore option from iTunes it should get the 9A406 build. Will not come OTA. Has to be manually applied since it only effects limited number of users.

    Should I install this update, even if I've never had that Sim error message come up on my iPhone 4S?  Also I seem to get different battery usage on mine, I currently have 22% left with 5 hour 1 minute usage and 21 hours, 58 minutes standby I pretty much have everything on, email is set to push, manual, hourly.   Thank you

    meebby - with those usage stats, don't try to fix what isn't broken, especially if you're using 3G :¬)

    Thank you!!!  This is my second iPhone, had to return the first one because it was draining.  I set up as new phone, did not use back up.  Guess I was lucky. Have a great day!!!
