Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

I'm having a similar problem. I got my 4S a little over a month ago and it was working fine until little over a week ago. The battery started draining at least 3-4 times as fast as it had previously, Usage and Standby times are usually the same (even though the phone is in standby).

So I went to the Apple Store and they told me that in 99% of the cases it was "corrupted software" (as in apps) and that restoring the phone to factory settings and manually adding apps again would solve the problem. It didn't. So I went back to the Apple Store again and again they told me the same thing, and gave the phone a "harder" reset, reinstalling the firmware as well. They told me not to restore from any backups (which means losing all text messages and app data). I did exactly what they told me but it didn't help at all.

Right now I have no apps installed, I'm on wi-fi, and I have turned off location services and push email. 4 hours and 45 minutes ago it was fully charged, but now it's on 71% and the only time I used the phone was for a 4 minute call. It still shows 4 hours 19 minutes Usage and 4 hours 45 minutes Standby.

It's my 4th iPhone and something is obviously not working the way it is supposed to.

    that is impossible...
for you to have it for 3 days stand by, you havent been using your phone at all.

    I use it pretty intensively.

    3g / wifi = on (always)

I use the web a lot!!!

    bluetooth = off

messenger - facebook - google plus

    email fetch hourly

    lots of pictures and video

    location services (only maps, gps)

this is the best I get.

I imagine this is good because a smartphone doesn't go more than a day and a half ( of lite use).

if you use it a lot like me, then you should at least get ONE DAY. not 3!!!!

I replaced my phone once at the Apple store and did everything mentioned in terms of notifications/location services, apps, etc. I also have run it down twice and booted it back up to 100%. I am happy to report it is much better. I am now at 1% battery with usage of 6 hours, 56 minutes and standby of 3 days, 1 hour. I found that after running it down each time and booting it back up the battery life continued to improve.

That is good news. However a Li-on battery does not really "like" to be fully discharged constantly. That will wear it out a lot faster (life not charge). A top off is much better for that type of battery.  Apple recommends maybe once a month to fully discharge but most every other thing you can read about Li-on batteries state otherwise. Apple maybe suggesting this to keep it calibrated with the software.. Anyway 3 days! and 7 hrs use. I mean you cant get much better than that. Curious why folks just dont want to plug in their phones for an hour or 2 every day. They charge up so fast its not like your old school power drill that takes 12 or 24 hrs to recharge. Apple provides a free charger that will probably outlast the phone

The fact that your Usage and Standby times are essentially the same would indicate that something is 'running' on the iPhone the whole time. In other words your iPhone is in constant use which would explain the high battery consumption.

I see that you are using iCloud... How often are you backing up data? I suggest setting the backup to MANUAL an running it once a day or something.

I have not experienced any of these problems so it leads me to suspect its not the iOS or the firmware... otherwise it would hit everyone and it clearly is not doing that....

Of course we have the same battery issues as every other iPhone 4s owner (battery drain). It even got worse with the update. So, we turned everything off. I mean everything (location, iCloud, push, etc.).  We then did a hard reboot. Honestly, the phone is holding a charge much longer. The increase in battery life is about 50%. We have two phones and both have improved. The sad part is that Apple knows they have a problem with the battery and has no remedy. Either, the batteries are defective or to small to handle all the apps on the phone at the same time. In either case the phone is a disappointment. I'm thinking that I should sell my Apple stock because when Wall Streets figures out that this problem will effect the sales of iPhones the stock will drop like a rock. By the way I have no battery issue with my iPad 2. Bigger battery I guess.  Try turning everything off, do a hard reboot and good luck.

you need to check your browsers

by grabing the page and shrik it

    perhaps you have

1} browser pages open this makes the browser app open by handle

2} you have an app open double click the main itop it goes white and  shows open apps

3} turn off 3g and wifi  check above  run the phone to 0 till it turns off

ignore warnings that popup ie at 20 and 10 %

then fully charge it from the power plug without touching it for about 2-3hrs

    then check its progress

here it takes 1hr 40mins for my first charge cycle

you must cycle the battery atleast ones from the box and its charge

the inital charge on any battery is electro chemical

and isnt an ion regiem  ... so isnt very 'deep' proton

    so..

1st out the box should be

1} load all apps like google and earth and some camera free apps etc  what you can find

2} load your music as when its inital using usb it wont charge cycle

3} do setup of icloud and etc services  as per your restrictions and services regiem and payment cycles

    4} add your manual entries like contacts lists etc i use a pc and manual number entry to match imported email lists from my laptop xp setup email contacts list {very handy if your pals change there numbers}

    so

    once its setup

    turn

blue tooth off wifi off 3g off

it takes about 20 mins to get used to the iphone 4s menus

ive never used an iphone before

and this is my last post on the battery issues

what a load of parot droppings  for sure

no issue exists past impetuous people

    Hey BritinUSA,

Thanks for your reply. I have been thinking the same thing, but I'm not using iCloud for backups, only for syncing my contacts and calendars. Also, iCloud never backs up in the background unless it's "plugged in, locked and connected to Wi-Fi". My phone is set up as a new phone and essentially has nothing on it, except my contacts and calendars. No apps, no photos, no music etc.

However, I might be missing something so any additional ideas or help is greatly appreciated.

    What up guyz,

Yesterday, after reading looots of comments and advices, I restored my whole system,

Reset the settings, put all my data back up on device, configured as a new phone,

since then, notifications off, location services on but all apps off including siri,

emails as push manually, I used all day on 3g mode, just so you know now it´s 4:50 pm

in Brazil, and I still have 35% of battery, it definately got better ( of course i didn´t not expect

to have all these problems and go through all these different methods to have a little

    bit more of battery life).

I didn´t wait intil battery was 0% yesterday so I could recharge to 100% but I´ve seen improvement.

I recommend you guys to try the same until apple becomes real mobile company and updates the current

    system.

At least, after one day of restoring the whole system, I didn´t even need to recharge it yet!

    Best reagards,

By "hard reboot" you mean restoring the phone as a new phone? I did that, but still, my iphone battery can just last one and half days. I turned everything off overnight and it still dropped 8%.

the problem is i think space

in most ipods the battery is 1.1amph type at 3.8v  the chipset runs at 3.3v

so  you have a simple set of maths

to work out the battery simply cany ehxume more than 1.1 amps for 3.8 hrs

so  .. each ic etc etc  see the posts

    ? good at maths

    work it out

    you get 5 days max

with it as like an old phone 2g

turn on all the extras expect less bat

its such a tight space inside  for sure

    meaures can include

    solar cells add in

    RC HC battery pack

    snow cell {for climbing etc}

mud battery sheet metal short term

    desert cell

    DOCK

    DOCK2 charge

    etc

I got my Iphone 4s about 6 weeks ago, first ever iphone. Was appalled at the battery life, I could literally watch it go down while looking at it. Had never had a cell phone in the history of 10+ years that sucked battery so badly. I Was suddenly missing my LG Envy that could go for days without charging. Over the last 6 weeks Iphone has slowly gotten better by itself or with recharging, not sure what was helping.  Also I keep everything turned off except when I actually need it, so keep Wifi set to off, bluetooth off, Siri off, brightness of the screen down, etc, vibrate off,  and it does much better. Otherwise when Wifi is on it loses about 7% per hour.  So, it's a Love-Hate relationship. I love access to internet and maps while 'on the go'. I hate the 'worry' about losing battery and I hate the complexity of the phone and the difficulty of texting compared with the LG Envy.  I barely can use Siri and still can't figure out what to do about the Cloud or if I want or need the Cloud. Had to resort to getting a car charger for the first time since 2001. sigh. Buyers beware.

Apple makes this such a dillema: they made 4s so fancy and sophisticated with so many functions, on the other hand, you can't use them because of the terrible battery life. By the way, now how long your battery can last? Mine is about one day. With wifi on, mail fetch, location off. Neither heavy nor light use.

well according to what i´ve been through today, using 3g the whole day but without using everything all new features (notifications, siri and etc) I went to work in the morning with 100% and got back home around 5:00p.m with still 35-40% hiperventilating- battery alive (sarcasm), but i´ll definately recharge that tonight, so for me it works now how It normally does usually in my case.

    really annoying!!

I got my 4s this week,

    I have owned a 3G a 3GS and iPhone4

Without a doubt this battery life is TERRIBLE!

no push, no location services, wifi only on when im in wifi,

Im not even getting a days use of it, kinda regret selling my 4 to upgrade as clearly this is an obscene problem, its sad the fact we can all sit here with our 4s and watch our battery gaugues dribble out,

I HOPE the updates fix this,

BUT its looking like the battery isnt BIG enought to handle the phone

I have had the Iphone 4S for a month. With everything turned off I can get 4 or 5 days out of the phone just on standby and a few phone calls. Turn on WiFi and the battery is dead within 10 hours. Thats *****.

At least the original Iphone would last two days and that was 4 years old!

This is just not good enough
