Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

i will give everyone an update, havent posted here in a week.  my iphone 4s drains battery power super fast, in three to three and a half hours it is dead. no games or video, just twitter.  as many of you will see from prior posts, i have tried absolutely every fix known to man, no need to respond.  apple store replaced the phone and the same problem. i sent e mail to apple, and they connected me to someone in the technical engineering department.  i downloaded a file that tracked my phone for several days, and then sent it off to apple.  i hope to hear back from apple engineering in a week or two.

in the meantime, i get full tech specs with my ipad, also running IOS 5.  My battery drain did indeed get worse for 5.0.1 over 5.0 just like many other people here.  i would strongly suggest anyone NOT download 5.0.1

I do not believe this is hardware, it must be how IOS interacts with, perhaps, some apps.  Short of wiping the phone clean, downloading one app at a time and then testing battery draw (which with 80 apps i am not about to do) i dont know which one(s).  But it must be common as so many have battery draw issues.

in any case, I also went to ATT.  I was in 30 day window to just return the 4s and go back to my 4, which i still have, and just wait a few months for apple to finally see what the **** is going wrong and fix it with a patch, update or whatever.  however, the ATT manager had a good idea, that for me is a good work around at this time.  I bought a Morphie external battery pack.  Its really not that thick or heavy, has a nice feel to it, and when my battery drains in three hours, i switch it on and i get another 4-5 hours.  so i have to recharge daily, but not like before when i had to recharge 2-3 times daily.  ATT was nice enough to give me a discount for all the trouble i had too.  So for now, wait and see until what apple says.

I also had the battery problems, when i got my iPhone 4s 16 gb. I could only last for about 24 hours on a full charge, with every things turnt off. (wifi, bluetooth, location services, no apps, no mail and so on.)

About a week ago i plugged my iPhone to iTunes, to do a reset. After the reset i haven't noticed any battery drain at all. After the reset i got this software version 5.0.1 (9A406) with modem firmware 1.0.14.

Now i have every settings turnt on, except bluetooth.

    Here's my current stats.

After downloading iOS 5.0.1 my iPhone 3GS shuts down with 10-15% battery life left with no warning at all.  I get the warning at 20%,but  never make it to the 10% warning any more.

Even after I restored it to the orginal setting it still shuts down at 10-15%. It worked fine with iOS 5.0.  I'm not sure what 5.0.1 was supposed to fix, but it made my battery life worse.

I hope Apple comes up with a real fix soon.

I live in Western Australia and bought an iPhone 4s yesterday. I charged it to 100% before going to bed at 2300 hrs last night, and to my horror found the battery to be completely flat at 0730 hrs today.

After reading so many similar stories I'm inclined not to mess about finding solutions; instead return the phone and continue using the amazing Nokia N95, which hasn't missed a beat in about four years and has up to three days battery life.

As there's no obvious solution offered by Apple, then please take this posting as a warning to potential buyers to steer clear of this phone.

ithink you charged the phone halfway but anyhow you have hardly used your phone. 3 hours 48 minutes in 3 days means you have only turned on/off the screen and causually sent texts. That's not really how you use a smartphone though

No, i didnt charged it halfway. Why should i do that? But you're right, i havent used it much. Just sent/received texts and mails. And about 30 minutes of 3g surfing. But last time i charged the phone, it held battery for 2 and a half day, with 13 hours of usage. With alot of 3g, calls, texts, mail and facebook. But no games though.

And my sister got the same phone as me, and hers almost similar to mine.

I also had a battery drain of 5-6% an hour in standby. My issue has resolved after the 10th restore as new device. I am now running built 9A406.

    @Navwolf

I would give it a week or two to settle down.

My battery discharge now is very different to when I bought the phone.

    @alexsk

So I went to the Apple Store and they told me that in 99% of the cases it was "corrupted software" (as in apps)

That is really strange! iPhone 4 with iOS 4.3 does not have this problem with corrupted apps but iPhone 4S with iOS 5.X.X has the problem of corrupted apps and the most of the apps are the same!!!!

Apple Store will say anything in order that one does not return the iPhone 4S and asks for a refund!

restoring the phone to factory settings and manually adding apps again would solve the problem. It didn't. So I went back to the Apple Store again and again they told me the same thing, and gave the phone a "harder" reset, reinstalling the firmware as well. They told me not to restore from any backups (which means losing all text messages and app data). I did exactly what they told me but it didn't help at all.

Restoring the phone does not help on a medium and long-term! It helps only on short term (just enough that one leaves the Apple Store)! In maximum one week the awful battery drain is back!

    ....

I do not believe this is hardware, ...

...good work around ....  I bought a Morphie external battery pack.

This is really strange! Using a hardware solution in order to fix a (hypothetical) software issue!!!!

Are you sure Guizotia that your way how you use your phone has not changed compared to the days after you bought you phone? I guess that during the first days you have been using the iPhone 4S a lot and probably now you are using it less. This is the most probable cause of why your battery is discharging very differently now!

    Hi,

just to let you know: Like many of you I have tried to solve the excessive drainage problem by switching off location services, several apps etc etc. Nothing worked. Even after switching off almost everything and shutting down the iPhone, not only stand-by time increased (what is normal), but also Usage increased.

At the same time I had to reboot my iPhone 4 times a day after the 'invalid SIM'-message.

So I went to the Vodafone-shop and got me the latest microsim-9. (I had a microsim-7 before).

    Result:

    NO BATTERY DRAIN

    NO REBOOTING ANYMORE

NO INCREASING USAGE WHEN PHONE IS SWITCHED OFF

Looked like battery was draining on 'old'-microsim.

Anyone tried the same with the same result?

    Gr,  Eddy

Well looks like Apple really can't fix it. I feel sure they would have wanted a bug free version out for Chritmas.

The company I work for, which is almost 10,000 people, are going to Blackberry following the large number of complaints. Not everyone has a phone on the company but I am told it is close to 3,000 devices!

I have my own 4S but never again will I be at the front of the queue for a new Apple product. I am unhappy about the battery life but unhappier about the way Apple treats it's customers, no updates ever!
