Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

    Black 4s, 64gb, att

A quick update.  I can stream from pandora for hours with hardly any battery drain, but as soon as I do stuff that involves the screen being on the battery goes pretty quick.

The other day it took an hour of streaming pandora stations to run out the last 1%, but today I was messing with the camera with 3% left and the phone lost power and shut down. Hm. Interesting.

BY DEDUCTION.: 1.: iOS5 :why? A.: because iphone 4G updating to ios5 have battery problems too.

B.: IPHONE 4S have battery issues out of the box  BUT  (see2)

2.: A REAL   bad battery or hardware problem  because some do only 4 to 10 hours with each

charge and/ or phone getting hot.

                                  3.: BOTH ( 1 & 2 ) :less than 4 hours of use .

so have to wait to a update...........after update....and  if still some have batt. problems :change phone.

Apple is bying time...for a fix ASP....they cannot change all phone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

one thing :they release it to soon period. not extensive test............... because a new phone hardware with a

new iOS5 at the same time. need a perfect match and all test /situation possible.

you know all windows users : ex.; WINDOWS XP release : then 2 month after :a service pack!!!!!!!!!!! then 2

    others.

but whe dont have a computer deffective , it is a smart phone to make calls in the first thing (almost a computer!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

P.S.: with a faster processor they should put in a 1850 mah battery in the first place.

i think it is a 50 mah more than the ipone 4

I think I have solved my battery problem.

My battery was draining in 4 to 5 hours.

This is an article worth reading: http://www.macworld.com/article/163200/2011/10/troubleshoot_iphone4s_battery.htm l

I installed System Activity Monitor and it was showiing my CPU at 80% about half of the time and 2% the rest of the time.

Some of the more active tasks running had "cal" as part of their name. So I disabled Calendaring in Exchange.

Immediately CPU went down to 2% and is at 2% all of the time. Battery usage has been static for the past hour.

I have had my 4s for 6 days and the battery life is terrible - cannot even make it through the day without having to charge the phone.  Have registered a call with Apple and am about to phone them.

Have an appointment with genius bar on Sat - as I am in my 6 days I will request a replacement.  The call revealed the same advice as is all over this forum - turn off location services, push etc etc.  I pointed out that I didn't want to have to doctor my phone to make it work; also the guy didn't know when or if there would be a fix.  So taking the info from this forum - that if this was a widespead problem apple wouldn't be able to deal with the volume of complaints, I am opting for a new one with a, hopefully, decent battery.

Meanwhile he told me to go here to maxmise my battery life:

I was having a similar problem with my iPhone 4 and our 3GS when I upgraded to iOS 5 and activated iCloud - it was really iCloud that caused the problem as I discovered that it was constantly trying to update the contacts and chewing through the battery like there was no tomorrow...well there would be no using the iPhone tomorrow as it would be dead by the end of today...anyway...I simply turned off contacts in iCloud settings and then turned it back on with each phone and hey presto - problem solved !

I would be really good if they reimplement the functionality to turn of 3G again. This would help.

Right I think I have found a solution, firstly I had terrible battery problems and i noticed that when I went usage and diagnostic that their was an error report saying mobilmail.app [699] error. I turned off an email account that was using exchange and I disabled iCloud from syncing individual apps. I deleted an app from my iPhone but was still in my iCloud back up. I think that iCloud constantly checks apps, contacts and everything else and when it can't find an app on your phone the CPU is working overtime to search for the missing app but does not notice that it has been deleted you have to manually delete it from iCloud. This makes sense but their is a problem with mail as well, I deleted the exchange account and the battery is working the way it should be also with iCloud backup off. The problem is with iCloud and mobilmail.app which is apples very own iCloud email. I hope this helps, I would like to know if you with problem with the battery has the same error file in the diagnostic section. Mobilmail [699]? If so we can fix it. Saying that we shouldn't do anything, we paid good money for something that is clearly under performing it is a joke!

I played with all the tips and tricks and settings in this thread but nothing made much of a difference.

Then, I turned off WiFi... specifically I "forgot" the WiFi networks I had previously set up. This forced the iPhone 4s into 3G mode all the time.

Suddenly, battery was at least twice as good. Maby 2.5x as good? I went from blowing through 17% of batter per hour to 4% battery per hour with the same usage pattern.

So I really think there's an iOS5 bug with WiFi that is making the phone eat a crazy ridiculous amount of battery. At least when connecting to certain network topologies.

Hi All, been watching this for a while so I thought I would share my experiences.

Battery drain is about 5% per hour with all apps closed, location off and just fetching email (imap) and calendar / contacts (exchange) once per hour (over night). I have tried all the things suggested with no luck. I also see high usage numbers when the phone has not been used and lots of diagnostic messages. Just to formally register the issues I called Apple support this morning, they were not surprised that I had a battery drain issue whit the 4S and asked lots questions. The only suggestion was to replace the phone, eventually they agreed to an express replacement and waved the usual fee.

I also suspect this may be a SW issue but as Apple are not fessing up to it yet its better to be safe.

Will let you know what happens.

I've been having the same battery problems with my 4S too, but after some fiddling I seem to have fixed it at least for now.

My fix 1: Yesterday I noticed that the battery usage indicator showed the standby and usage times to be the same even though the phone had been on standby for several hours without being used. Delving further I discovered that the GPS icon was on nearly all the time even when the screen was locked. Delving even further I found out that the auto time zone setting was using location services constantly - I turned this off and battery life improved drastically.

My fix 2: I found an article on google that mentioned problems with iCloud syncing of contacts and the phone going in to a crash loop if any contacts were corrupted in any way. Using this as a starting point I turned iCloud contacts off on the phone and deleted all contacts. I then went through my contacts on my MacBook one by one (only about 200) deleting ones I didn't need any more, and correcting any that had multiple address, phone number, or email entries. I then turned iCloud contacts back on.

My fix 3: Again looking at iCloud but this time at documents. There were several documents that were corrupt and stuck in the download/sync between iCloud and my iPhone and iPad. These can only be deleted on the iCloud website so I deleted them and they vanished from the iPhone.

I'm guessing any iCloud syncing problems force the phone to keep trying to sync and drains battery life. The phone has been off charge for 2 hours now, used for about 15 minutes, and is still on 100% charge.

I turned practically everything off - location services, notifications, iCloud. I've now even turned off all cellular data. My 4S is still haemorrhaging power at about 5% an hour, even in standby. This really shouldn't be happening when the phone isn't even being used.

I've done a full charge cycle and even wiped the phone to reuse it as new rather than from a restore. Last ngiht I charged it to 100% and left it overnight - it was down to about 85% by the morning. I also noticed my data usage was at around 13MB received when I'd been using it for nothing more than simple emails. As I'm now on a tariff that charges for data I'm understandably worried about being billed for things I haven't even used.

I downloaded System monitor but it doesn't reveal any background processes chewing up memory. Could it be I've been given a duff phone?
