Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

RESTORE IPHONE like new, without connecting it to your itunes account or icloud. After this step, connect it to your account and make backups of all the apps, photos, contacts, music etc.. In this way at first update the firmware and then install the rest.

I have been watching this thread closely. I have the 06 build of 5.0.1. Last few days am in an area with a poor 3G coverage, my 4S drains noticeably faster than usual! Apple has to do something about this useless piece of hardware! 3-4 hrs of actual usage and its dead!

It's iOS 5, it's causing almost all iPhone 4s to have terrible battery life ! I had no problem with my battery but when I updated to ios 5.0.1 its rediculus how much my battery drains, apple said they fixed it in the new beta of ios 5.1 but a lot of beta testers are saying it didn't fix it, so the only thing we can do is wait for apple to fix their mistake

Haven't chimmed in lately, BUT It's Not iOS5 or 5.0.1 and "it's causing almost all iPhone 4s to have terrible battery life !" NOT THE CASE. Mine, My wifes and All of my co-workers who have New 4s (2 new in my family) our std 4 with iOs5 loaded have expected or better battry life from day one. I can Say that my coworkers with new 4s iPhones are on Verizon. We have updated to 5.0.1 and got better life since the update cured the roag closed app's process that stayed running. My 2 4s have had great battery life 2-3day to charge since day one (presale)

There are variables that will contribute to high usage, old apps not 5 compatable, contant email pushing, not closing apps from Dock, turning wifi off when not in an area of usage, etc to name a few. By doing a little usage maintenance you will get far less drain and extened battery life.

I have the similar problem like you and below is my solution to my problem to get back normal battery life

    1. Delete the iCloud account and move my digital hub from the cloud back to my macbook, which is working perfectly before Steve Jobs introduce the iCloud.

    2. Disable WIFI sync.

Since Apple chose to remained silence to all these battery related problem, we have to find the solution ourselves by try-and-error. This solution works for me, but I am not sure whether it will work in your case, you may give it a try.

This batterygate problem is way more serious than antennagate problem last year, which when Jobs was still around, offer all iPhone 4 users with a free bumper to eliminate the problem. But Apple under Tim Cook is doing nothing for this batterygate problem, which is a real problem that affecting iPhone 4/4S users worldwide. Perhaps we should raise an online petition to let all dissatified iPhone 4S users worldwide to express their dissatification to Apple.

Have you tried the reset all settings process documented in another thread? See below for the procedure if you have not and give it a try:

For anyone new to the thread be sure to go through these steps to address the battery after updating to iOS 5.0.1:

    1. Reset all settings (settings app-> general-> reset)

2 a. Go through initial setup steps (lang, wifi, siri, enable location, etc) and choose setup as new phone (don't worry your apps, data, contacts, mail will still be there). Do NOT restore from iCloud or iTunes (It can copy back corrupt settings)

2 b. If you do not get the complete new setup screen with language setup and setup as new phone or restore from iTune/iCloud backup, be sure to go back to #1 and reset all settings again (it should happen the second time)

    3. Turn off system location services timezone and iAd (settings -> location services -> system services)

    4. Fully discharge battery (until you get the spinning wheel and it shuts off)

    5. Fully recharge battery (overnight if possible)

In my experience this improves the Standby battery drain issue significantly in most cases.  It reduces drain from 2-4% or more per hr to 0.5% or less. It has worked for many, many users now. If it does not work after a few try's you may have a real battery or hardware issue and should contact Apple.  Good Luck!

The wifi sync setting could certainly make a difference. Not really needed since most of the time you are at the machine anyways to start iTunes so just as easy to plug in. Also have heard a few issues with the way certain routers are configured using themselves as DNS servers and creating some issues with the way iPhone commuicates. There is a write up if interested at www.buxbusters.com.

I have not had a real issue with that particular process but turning off wifi sync did help battery life a little. I already get pretty good battery life, not quite as good  as some folks report but a LOT better than some others.  The 5.0.1 update helped me from iOS 5 that the phone shipped with. I am happy with the 4s

It's ridiculous that you have to even disable features to extend battery life. What's the point of having a smartphone then?

Apple still sitting on their  "a.s.s" doing nothing about the issue with no official statement since the last update.

    SOLVED

Solved for my case (caused by WhatsApp notification), this will suggest because of the bug in the WhatsApp or in the Notifications Center itself.. Might also affect other Messenger apps:

Go to Settings > Notifications > WhatsApp :

    - Notfication Center : Off

    - Alert Style: None

    - Badge App Icon: On

    - Sounds: Off

    - View in Lock Screen: Off

If I turn On the "View in Lock Screen" setting, my battery will drain very fast if I keep the UNREAD mesage in the screen for long time.

Just my screenie of my usage screen .. got another 15 minute usage and 20 min stand by before it shut off. I am running 5.0.1 (9A406) and comparing to (9A405), I may be just paranoid, but I find 906 has better life.
