Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

Iphone 4S???  This phone create lots of problem. Main thing is the battery. We should pay a high amount for the phone and now we are suffering lots of problem. Why? Apple company have make a final disession about this phone problem. They have to call back all the phone and replace the battery.

It's iOS 5, it's causing almost all iPhone 4s to have terrible battery life ! I had no problem with my battery but when I updated to ios 5.0.1 its rediculus how much my battery drains, apple said they fixed it in the new beta of ios 5.1 but a lot of beta testers are saying it didn't fix it, so the only thing we can do is wait for apple to fix their mistake

Haven't chimmed in lately, BUT It's Not iOS5 or 5.0.1 and "it's causing almost all iPhone 4s to have terrible battery life !" NOT THE CASE. Mine, My wifes and All of my co-workers who have New 4s (2 new in my family) our std 4 with iOs5 loaded have expected or better battry life from day one. I can Say that my coworkers with new 4s iPhones are on Verizon. We have updated to 5.0.1 and got better life since the update cured the roag closed app's process that stayed running. My 2 4s have had great battery life 2-3day to charge since day one (presale)

From my experience and from what people have posted on this forums, one can get easily 3-4 days of usage with iPhone 4S only and only if one keeps all the time WIFI and Cellular Data off!!!

It would be great to know if this is your case too!

i had upgrade my iphone 4S to 5.0.1. but, i am still having the same problems. Last night 10pm, i had my iphone 4S fully cycle charge done. leave it on the table. this morning at 7am i wake up, my battery has drain to 80%. I had close up all the apps. i am still not sure what is the problems cause. i had do so many testing according from the internet. yet, i still cant figure it out. Can any 1 of the Apple Technical help on this ?

Have you tried the reset all settings process documented in another thread? See below for the procedure if you have not and give it a try:

For anyone new to the thread be sure to go through these steps to address the battery after updating to iOS 5.0.1:

    1. Reset all settings (settings app-> general-> reset)

2 a. Go through initial setup steps (lang, wifi, siri, enable location, etc) and choose setup as new phone (don't worry your apps, data, contacts, mail will still be there). Do NOT restore from iCloud or iTunes (It can copy back corrupt settings)

2 b. If you do not get the complete new setup screen with language setup and setup as new phone or restore from iTune/iCloud backup, be sure to go back to #1 and reset all settings again (it should happen the second time)

    3. Turn off system location services timezone and iAd (settings -> location services -> system services)

    4. Fully discharge battery (until you get the spinning wheel and it shuts off)

    5. Fully recharge battery (overnight if possible)

In my experience this improves the Standby battery drain issue significantly in most cases.  It reduces drain from 2-4% or more per hr to 0.5% or less. It has worked for many, many users now. If it does not work after a few try's you may have a real battery or hardware issue and should contact Apple.  Good Luck!

These instructions work only few few days after that one is back to the miserable battery life! Fully discharging the battery is not recommended for Lithium batteries!!!

This is the only thing that has helped me. I use Wifi data, but have cellular data off. I have the static noise problem and it is not so intense when I use wifi as it is when cellular data is on. I don't think apple can fix this with softwareupdate, but I will give them until 5.1 and see what happens. If that doesn't fix it, I expect a recall so I can get a working phone for my money. I have everything on except cellular data, Siri(not supported in my language) and bluetooth. I have acceptable battery usage now, can use my phone for 6-7 hours, 1 day 13 hours standby so it is not exceptionally good, but acceptable. When cellular data was on I got 4-5 hours use, and 18-20 hours standby, cellular data was on, but I used mostly wifi.

Same problem with me.... Fully charged at 8 a.m. (100%). Now, at 09.49 a.m., not doing anything on it, it as been always on stand by mode, it only has 91%..... (????)  I don´t think this is normal...... Is it really a software version problem?

You are correct indeed. I wrote it badly. It should have been:

    3. Turn off system location services timezone and iAd (settings -> location services -> system services)

I´ve noticed that the location services icon (purple arrow) was always purple. After turning off timezone and iAd now it is always gray, unless I'm using an application with location services.

I didn't reset my settings, just turned off some unused services and cellular data (but keep wifi on).

I hope this helps me save some battery, I'm getting 5-10% battery drain per hour.

But I really want to keep using 3G, believe it or not, is faster and more stable than my corporate wifi service.

I'll get back with my results.

    Thanks

    hi everyone!!

i got the same problem too, just paid £700 for this iphone 4s. Apple should sort this matter out soon, or elase we need to claim our money back. this is not good at all, they should address this issue on the frnt page of website and let people know about what is the problem and what are they doing about it.

So I'm from Sourh Africa, was one of the few who got the first IPhone 4S in the country. Eager awaiting siri and the new

Phone (been using an iPhone since the first day it came out) I have been very dissapointed with the phones battery as well as Siri. Siri isn't bad considering my accent, but you cannot do much if you are living outside of the USA. Siri aside, the battery is horrendous!!! My iPhone 4 got 3x better battery life!! This is my 4th full charge cycle

Now, I have been browsing the web and sent a few texts and

My battery is already on 78% (1 hour of standby time and 34 min of usage)

As a business man not having a phone that will last a day is not on, especially when they promote a

Better battery life with the new 4S!!

Please help apple, I'm a big fan and always have been, but don't let me down now!! My friends Androids are catching up ALOT quicker than expected!!

    SOLVED

Solved for my case (caused by WhatsApp notification), this will suggest because of the bug in the WhatsApp or in the Notifications Center itself.. Might also affect other Messenger apps:

Go to Settings > Notifications > WhatsApp :

    - Notfication Center : Off

    - Alert Style: None

    - Badge App Icon: On

    - Sounds: Off

    - View in Lock Screen: Off

If I turn On the "View in Lock Screen" setting, my battery will drain very fast if I keep the UNREAD mesage in the screen for long time.

Thanks for the info. This is a prime example of what's contributing to the poor battery life. Certainly returning your  iPhone 4s hardware multiple times would not solve this type of issue if folks are just reinstalling  the same apps again. Now before folks go off, yes these may have worked on your old iPhone prior to iOS 5. But perhaps they are not iOS5 compatible therefore causing problems. That's why Apple releases updated iOS (ie iOS 5.1) to developers first so THEY can rewrite their code to make it compatible with the new OS and its new features. That's what several of us posting here have suggested to folks with excessive drain and nothing has worked for them to restore to factory and then running the phone in its native state to test if the phone hardware is working as it should then adding back a few apps at a time until you find an offending app. While this is a pain folks have to understand  that a new iOS with new features like Notifications will require major testing and rewrites to apps to get them all working with the new features. Not only by Apple but by all the developers writing these apps. I have seen a few other apps people have found causing their battery issues and once removed their new iPhone worked as it should.  If people would think about it, that is why this issue is so strange in that not every one has it and folks that DO have it seem to have it after returning their phones to Apple 3,4, and 5 times. I would bet that within several months, and the next update(s) from Apple this will settle down as more apps will start being identified as needing some work (not just iOS) to make them work correctly with the latest iOS features.

Thanks again for posting this info !

I would suspect software would solve it. Are you on a different carrier  (GSM)?  I am on Verizon (CDMA) so we cant use data and voice at the same time. So maybe that functionallity its contributing to the static and would explain why it goes away when you turn off cellular data. Just a thought.

Sorry its not helping you. I would guess you have some app thats not releasing and keeping some service running. As for the battery drain/recharge, you are partically correct.Typically Li-on batteries do prefer to be topped off and stay close to full. However for the iPhone there is a calibration that needsd to happen to get actual battery power in sync with the software. So for example the phone may report 1% but run several more hours. or report 5% and shut down. So  the drain /recharge calibrates the actual power with the software reporting it. Also Apple recommends at least monthly drain /recharge to keep the battery healthy.  http://www.apple.com/batteries/iphone.html

    Use iPhone Regularly

For proper maintenance of a lithium-based battery, it’s important to keep the electrons in it moving occasionally. Be sure to go through at least one charge cycle per month (charging the battery to 100% and then completely running it down).
