Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

OK - I get that the iCloud syncing contacts and docs could be the cause for the battery drainage.

However, I don't want to turn it off as I like the way it 'should' be working so I have all my stuff across all my iDevices.

So for the time being , I will leave it switched on except the iCloud mail as I dont use it and have redirected mail to hotmail and wait for Apple to release a software update.

ive turned nearly everything useful off with abit or success. its improved my battery abit. but it is still dropping quite fast...

im a heavy user i use my phone all day for absolutely everything including games. but i just had a call for 10 mins and lost 4% battery thats alot of battery like for a call.

someone earlier did mention it could be wifi... i notice my phone is constantly dropping in and out of wifi... when it goes into standby it drops wifi and when you click the home screen to check for mesages or calls or what ever it pops back into wifi only to drop out again a few seconds later.... that will use tonnes of battery.

ive got a few days before im stuck in this contract with Orange UK after seeing what The Google Nexus Prime looks like and how it works im seriously tempted to end this contract and get that

FYI...APPLE IS AWESOME!  I only posted 3 times regarding issues with 4s.  Apple actually called me regarding those posts.  Unfortunately, I am working on Lehman Brothers bankruptcy matter and did not have the time to go over everything with respect to iPhone, I will call the Apple rep tomorrow.  Apple is going to take care of all of us.  May need a little time, but let's face it.  APPLE IS THE PRIMO!  Will let all know what I find out regarding my issues with 4s.  I am so impressed that Apple would take the time to call!  Think any of the other providers woudl do so??  I think NOT!

that might be because of the large number of complaints... i just dont want to be tied into a 24month contract with no hope

64gb,Black,O2 Using my iPhone 4 Sim.

I too have all the above.I do aggree that if you go to Settings-iCloud-Documents and Data then switch off "Use Cellular".By doing this my battery is lasting much longer.I started at 4.30pm Monday at 94% and at the 10.41am Tuesday I have 63% left, with little use (a few calls, emails etc).

Well, I thought I was fixed ..... until this morning when I had doubts (drop of 3% in as many minutes). The last 3 charges have lasted me 36 hours+ of light use. I would be happy with that. Having said that there maybe is a design issue ..... and I suspect this will be fixed with a hardware mod that will be secret discussed and definitely NOT discussed!

For your interest I have found one thing that has, I belive, made a significant differrence. I have turned off 'Lift to Speak' in Siri. No loss to me as, so far, Siri seems to be a heap of junk anyway.

Maybe you will find this equally useful?

well ive done what i would call light usage scrolled through the settings a bit made a phone call and left on stand by for the most part and im at 86% after 3 hours

tbh i dont think it should have even dropped 5% cause ive barely used it

I too have been suffering battery issues as described in all the previous posts,  my iPhone 4S is much worse than my old 3GS (it barely lasts a working day, draining from 100% at 0730 to 7% by 1730 - with zero usage).

I've been trying out much of the advice offered here about turning stuff off in settings.  None of this made any noticeable difference BUT I did notice a difference after following @dag55's advice and deleting and resetting my Exchange account last night.

Now my battery has lasted in standby so far from 2130 last night (100%) to 1100 today at 53% - still not fantastic but an improvement of two-thirds.  So for me the Exchange settings were a big issue.  I'm hoping there will be further improvements from Apple SOON to get my lovely new toy close to the advertised battery life!

When I got my iPhone 4S, I didn't do a restore, but installed everything from scratch. The only setting I've switched off is setting time zone in Location Services - System Services. It took a couple of charging cycles before the battery life became better. And I've noticed two things: switching Wifi off during office hours saves a huge amount of battery life. And the battery drain percentage is not linear. The first 20% go quickly, but then it stays for a while. I leave the house in the morning fully charged, and leave the office with ~50%, using it in a "normal" way during the day (checking emails regularly, using the browser, ~20 apps with notifications, texting etc).

Tried all of the suggestions posted here. Very sporadic battery life occurs regardless.

Yesterday, managed to get the phone to 1 day 2 hours on standby with about 3 hours use. Plugged phone in to charge over night, the alarm woke me this morning on the phone and whilst still on the charge I saw the battery was 98%.

It lost 2% from the alarm going off? Really? Checked the diagnostic data,  over 30 DWDD events. Before putting it on charge I had none. I had the iCloud backup off, but somehow it kept having DHCP issues according to the DWDD logs. Odd that it would need to keep checking the internet connection with no fetch or push email. No iCloud back up on.

Maybe I'm missing something but I don't understand why it was looping itself trying to connect to the wireless internet.

i think here you migh have hit the nail on the head..... i to have noticed this like loads of others. i is constantly looking for a WiFi connection even if its already connected as i said earlier when you put the iphone in standy by the wifi turns off. and if you hiot the home button and quickly look at the bit where the wifi logo is deisplayed it will eiher be on 3G or edge for a second or to before it connects back to the wifi

I have the iPhone 4S 32GB from Rogers Wireless in Canada.

The phone came almost fully charged and the battery live was amazing. After it drained to about 20% I charged fully. Within 10 minutes it dropped 5%. I let it drain until it turned itself off & fully charged. I've done this 4 times now.

I've read tips and applied some (turned off notifications, location, time zone one, reset network) and still the battery life is terrible.

I charged from 0 overnight and with the last 2 hours of use (Twitter, Rss Reader, World War, and now Safari) my battery life is at 87%. It was down to 95% within 15 minutes.

I hope it's fixed soon. I love my iPhone but with my upcoming bill (I'm embarrassed to say how much) and the battery issue I'm concerned.

Wish I could agree with you my friend but after having a year of problems with Apple and its various devices, also some very smug and unhelpful so called genius's both face to face and over the phone Apple will have to go a long way to make me feel that they are the "Best" once again and a lot further than a phone call.

This year alone Iv had a major hardware issue with my mac book pro (only 19 months old at the time) , my fiance has had problems with her 3gs and more recently backing up her iPhone to upgrade to IOS 5 which you can imagine has been an ear full for me and finally this battery problem with the 4S.

I love Apples design, user interface and when it works its integration with other applications but with all these problems the illusion of invincibility for me has gone.

I just hope this latest issue is only software based and that a simple update will fix the 4s teething problems once and for all.

I'm also having awful battery issues with my iPhone 4S.  I previously had an iPhone 4 and battery life was acceptable.  The 4S however is awful - the battery life fluctuates wildly from day to day.

Yesterday I went to bed at 11.30pm and left it fully charged with no apps running.  By 7am this morning it was completely dead and that's with zero usage!  I've gradually been turning things off to try and improve it but nothing makes much difference and anyway, that kind of defeats the point of a smartphone.

I'm really not happy.  I'm not a heavy user but if it can't even get through a normal working day, then it's simply not fit for purpose.
