Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

OK, here are my results.... Before last night, after battery drained I connected to the wall and it lasted 20 mins to start and yesterday's morning the battery was at 95%.

Last night after the restore (installed 9A406) and battery drain, I connected it to the wall... I got surprised because 10 mins later the phone was started and battery was at 5%! So, I tought the problem was solved... but... (there's always a but )...

    Bad news....

I left my iPhone charging all night and it only got to 72% of battery charge. The "usage statistics" do not detect this as a full charge.

Also I'm still getting a 4-5%/h battery drop..... not even close to the promised 0.5%/h

so now I'm uninstalling whatsapp (even though I didn't have it open before) and disabling iCloud, I really don't know what else to do....

I'm really disappointed... I was an iPhone user of the 1st gen, and had always been a fan, but didn't have the money to buy another iPhone until now, and this is very sad to me. Where I live I'm wure that will be a nightmare to change it for another unit.... I will start to find out how to do that.

This is wrong! Most of the iPhone 4S are not working great! It is has already been shown that 80% of iPhone 4S have hardware issues regarding the static noise which is related to a faulty chip!!!

Also from the posts on this forum has emerged a pattern which shows that iPhone 4S users which keep off all the time Wifi and Cellular Data (or do not have Cellular Data plan) get a good battery life! Otherwise the battery life of iPhone 4S is miserable and it is much worse than iPhone 4!!!

I have never heard or seen those stats. You may want to consider trying the 5.0.1 (9A406) version of firmware if you haven't since it pertains to the GSM simm etc. Has helps folks here with battery as well.

    Hi sbailey4,

Yes the probelm is related to WhatsApp. But I find out that it's located in the Notification settings. Have try the settings for a weeks. Now my iPhones 4S can last 2 days (from usually 10 hrs before change the settings). And now my iPhone no longer overheated like before.

    Settings > Notifications > WhatsApp

    Notification Centre: Off

    Alert Style: None

    Badge App Icon: On

    Sounds: On

    View in Lock Screen: Off

So the bug is either in the Notification module or in the WhatsApp it self..

Please try it and let me know your result..

Thanks for the confirmation. Hopefully others here may benefit if they also have that particular app. Just goes back to ALL iPhones are not faulty even one that experienced the battery issue. Certain apps and configurations will cause issues just as bad as faulty hardware and is more likely typically. Its a lot more variable than phones coming down the assembly line in a controlled environment. Think back to Windows. Do most folks have issues with faulty computers/hardware or is it Windows OS and apps that cause lockups and other issues. Not sayin there are NO faulty devices out there. Like anything else there will be a few batches with various issues.

My two cents in that issue

I have 4S 16GB for about a month . it had some sim problem at the begging , so I restore it to 406 build..

I can survive a full day  , that most of it hooked up to WIFI network  , and minor 3G usage .

the best score was usage of 6 houres and standby of 32 hours , either way  it gives me 6  hours of usage , (I have two exchange accounts and one  GMAIL account , location services most of them off. , and some phoce calling ...)

I don't know if it fine or not BUT my iphone 16GB 1st generetion  was preforming much better

I have verified this operation: If Raise to speak is off, and turn off iPhone (may have to twice) the sensor is off unless you make a phone call then it comes on until you hang up. Works like iPhione 4. If Raise to speak is on,.  anytime the screen is on so is the sensor but when screen is asleep the sensor is off.

    Thanks for your answer.

Is the sensor off if you disable "raise to speak" and your phone shows the home screen?

Because it wasn't off on my phone. (Even after I switched off raise to speak) And I wasn't making any phone call at this time.

Yes. You have to flip the raise to speak switch off then reboot the phone. I actually has to reboot twice before it went off. (strange)  After that it stayed off unless you initiated a phone call then it would come on until you pressed end then off again. With raise to speak on, its only on if display is active not whiule phone is in sleep mode

My battery has 45% remaining, thats after 5 hours of being at 100% is this normal? Doesn't seem right to me

I would say you need a battery calibration. That does not seem right to me either. 5 hrs at 100% is not accurate. the Apple spec is .5% per hr in standby. So after 2 hours in standby only you should see 99% for example.

Luis, Sorry this didnt help you. I read all you did in combining the processes. Not sure if you reset all settings after you did the restore of data or not but I would. Again, the process typically dont work if you restore a backup but restore backup then reset all settings has worked at times. However in your case the battery did not charge to 100% so you could have a faulty battery or charger. If you can get to an Apple store they can test that for you and change the battery if found defective. Otherwise I would take these steps:

1: uninstall WhatsApp ( have seen a few posts verifying it caused issues with battery)

2: reset all settings, setup as new once more since you actually restored your backup afterwards and try it.

If after step 2 you dont see better results, restore to factory from iTunes once more, DO NOT restore data. Setup email fresh and see how it works, then add back a few of your apps a few at a time AFTER you see if factory setup will perform correctly. (eliminate 3rd party apps). I know this is a PIA but hoping it will help.

If you do all this and still no better results (from factory setup), perhaps a full iPhone swap out is in order . If the phone does not run correctly in its factory condition i mean.

If you have follow the news, iPhone 4S is actually plan B, due to the fact that Steve Jobs was actually putting all of his focus on iPhone 5, which didn't manage to make it to the launch due to some technical issues. Probably this might be the reason that iPhone 4S is not being proper tested, and Apple is taking launch-first-fix-later approach.

Really, And you heard this from Apple I suppose? Because there is no word that there even is an iPhone 5 from Apple. Only the blogs and BS rumor mill speculations. Not sure Apple has  ever stated, "oops sorry folks we could not get an iPhone 5 out by October so we happened to have this iPhone 4 lying around in the back with a new camera, new processor, different chip for worldwide use(GSM/CDMA) and new integraded AI system, so we will stick an "s" on it  and release it instead" . I mean surley you dont think the 4s came about as a "side project" for someone in case they cannot get a so called iPhone 5 built and out the door in a years time.  Any idea how much work and planning and developement would go into creating  a new phone such as this?

Lastly, so you think Steve was out working on an imaginary iPhone and had nothing to do with this "side project" someone else at Apple decided to do as a "Plan B".

Thanks, I called Apple, they also recommended me to do a full erase and not install eny apps or email or anything for a day to see if the battery keeps the same behavior.

I did the erase 10 mins ago and already lost 1%... I'll keep the track.

Now basically I have a OTB iPhone, I only synced my contacts and notes (basic data to use the phone) with iCloud, and changed normal settings like turning off bluetooth and location system services.

I have never heard or seen those stats. Would like to see where you got that information.

The 80% comes from the "Korean Times":

    http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/tech/2011/11/133_99359.html

    which states:

"Eight out of 10 respondents said that they experienced noise-related problems on their iPhone 4S. "

From your other posts below it appears maybe you are in Korea?

I am not from Korea. I am living in Europe.

If so could be a carrier issue or something else Appears you are on GSM .

Indeed I am on a GSM carrier with my iPhone 4s. I do not believe in carrier issues. I have never had any problems with any carrier in my country with any other phone. Also I have never heard anyone having problems with any of the carriers in my country. The network coverage is excellent here (it is a small country). The problem appears only when I am using iPhone 4s.

I am on a US Verizon CDMA version and everyone I personally know with this phone is too and I know no one with any issues at all ever with battery or call quality, static etc.

It might be that on CDMA networks the iPhone 4s is working fine.

So perhaps your stats are 80% of GSM iPhones in Korea on that carrier, or 80% of folks you know

As I said I found first this 80% here:

    http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/tech/2011/11/133_99359.html

Also I have asked 9 persons who I know personally to own iPhone 4S and all of them have static noise issues. So the percentage is even worse than the 80% between my friends.

but big picture of all of iPhones Apple has sold I suspect you are completely incorrect.

I am pretty sure that I am correct about the big picture of iPhone 4s! Now please is your turn to show your sources that indeed majority of iPhone 4S sold by Apple are working fine! I have shown my source that this indeed is not the case.

You may want to consider trying the 5.0.1 (9A406) version of firmware if you haven't since it pertains to the GSM simm etc.

I tried and 9A406 does not help at all. Hard resetting the iPhone 4s and keeping the wifi and Cellular data off helps but this is not why I paid a lot of money for a smartphone in order to use it as a dumb phone.

I don't know how to start a new post so I'm replying and hoping it's right -- if not please excuse my ignorance.  I have had my iPhone 4s upgraded from 3gs on December 9.  First few weeks seemed fine but now I'm losing battery at an amazing rate.  at 1:40 today I recharged it up to 64% and by 2:20 I have 57% and I haven't used the phone.  I tried using some of the above recommendations but decided screw that I bought the phone for it's capabilities so I should be able to use them.  My 3gs never presented any problems in the battery area.  I will be calling AT&T tonight to see what they are prepared to do.  I should not have to reprogram and reset everything they way they want it as it is my phone.

Has anyone heard talk of them replacing the batteries and for those of you who received a new phone are the replacement phones working better?

    Thanks for any input.
