Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

    I wouldn't worry about all the drama, if it kept failing, and still in warranty, I would back up my iPhone and take it to the Apple Store to get it diagnosed and possibly replaced or call and have a repair set up!

    Excellent. Now see if it will take a charge to 100%. That comment from you earlier was a bit odd. If it does charge to 100% then I would suspect a faulty battery. Thanks for the update

    Thanks for providing that link. However the10 people polled  from the Korean newspaper does not indicate that 80% of ALL Apple 4s customers worldwide are having static/hardware issues.  Also interesting in the article it was stated:

    " the iPhone 4S is technically the same as the iPhone 4. Why should I pay more to buy the same thing? It’s nonsense to purchase the 4S just to show my personal tribute to the late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs,’’ he said. "

    So clearly they may not be a reallible source as the iPhone 4 and 4s have a lot of differences. CPU, combined GSM/CDMA chipset, camera, battery,GPU to name a few. To be clear I DO believe there are some handsets out there in various parts of the world that are not behaving as they should. Some due to configurations and 3rd party apps, some due to probably hardware and some due to the new iOS which Apple is working on resolving. But 80% of the iphones bad? Well I have to disagree on that statement thats all. I do hate the fact than anyone is not getting what they paid their hard money for but hopefully Apple will make good on it soon.

    I don't know how to start a new post so I'm replying and hoping it's right -- if not please excuse my ignorance.  I have had my iPhone 4s upgraded from 3gs on December 9.  First few weeks seemed fine but now I'm losing battery at an amazing rate.  at 1:40 today I recharged it up to 64% and by 2:20 I have 57% and I haven't used the phone.  I tried using some of the above recommendations but decided screw that I bought the phone for it's capabilities so I should be able to use them.  My 3gs never presented any problems in the battery area.  I will be calling AT&T tonight to see what they are prepared to do.  I should not have to reprogram and reset everything they way they want it as it is my phone.

    Has anyone heard talk of them replacing the batteries and for those of you who received a new phone are the replacement phones working better?

    Thanks for any input.

    I would try the "reset all settings" procedure noted below. It will keep your apps and data so not a huge deal to do. Follow process exactly including selecting set up as new. Sometimes, specifically the network settings get hosed causing this issue.

    For anyone new to the thread be sure to go through these steps to address the battery after updating to iOS 5.0.1:

    1. Reset all settings (settings app-> general-> reset)

    2 a. Go through initial setup steps (lang, wifi, siri, enable location, etc) and choose setup as new phone (don't worry your apps, data, contacts, mail will still be there). Do NOT restore from iCloud or iTunes (It can copy back corrupt settings)

    2 b. If you do not get the complete new setup screen with language setup and setup as new phone or restore from iTune/iCloud backup, be sure to go back to #1 and reset all settings again (it should happen the second time)

    3. Turn off system location services timezone and iAd (settings -> location services -> system services)

    4. Fully discharge battery (until you get the spinning wheel and it shuts off)

    5. Fully recharge battery (overnight if possible)

    In my experience this improves the Standby battery drain issue significantly in most cases.  It reduces drain from 2-4% or more per hr to 0.5% or less. It has worked for many, many users now. If it does not work after a few try's you may have a real battery or hardware issue and should contact Apple.  Good Luck!

    Sorry, but if the bettery charges to a 100% it would NOT be faulty, isn't it?

    In the last 2 hours the battery has lost 3%... but with no e-mail, no calls, no apps, almost no use at all... (I feel like when I used to have an old Nokia, just a simple basic phone )

    I don't know what to think

    Well, this my performance after restore (9A406), charge the battery about 6 hours and do a few things (check email, some messages, check Twitter... Everything under WiFi and already set everything recommended). I have not calibrated the battery yet.

    Is it good? I am sure that without WiFi would be worse.

    [PS: @sbailey4, please, could you tell me the best way to calibrate the battery? Thank you.]

    to calibrate the battery

    you simply use the phone past the 20% and 10% battery left warnings {you need to reply to them}

    then once it turns off

    leave it an few hours

    dont touch a control and plug in the fast mains charger

    fully charge the phone overnight if possible

    then use it as normal

    when it runs down to 20-30% charge it to 100 takes about 1hr max

    do the same once a month or every two months if you dont use it much past calls and texts

    and twice in the first month of use i recon is a good idea

    this will increase the capacity of the battery

    like running in a car engine

    on another topic

    what really screws me about iphone support ie apple support

    even though i disabled all email sending and contents

    i get over 50 BLANK  email per day

    it costs me if on 3g about 7-8mb a throw

    what is apple playing @

    and views and advice welcome

    as i have had to ditch my apple support email to use my phone with some degree of efficiency of use

    salvagoxo:

    Sacando la cuenta con el tiempo en reposo de tu iPhone hablamos de 3,46%/h de descarga.... Es bastante mejor que el de la mayoría de los que aquí han reportado falla (incluyendome, el mio estaba dandome 5,6%/h)

    Sin embargo no es lo que Apple promete, según ellos el dispositivo no deberia pasar de 0,5%/h de consumo. y algunos usuarios reportan que han logrado esto haciendo restore de configuraciones, a mi no me ha funcionado hasta ahora.

    seems to me mostly users who have

    1} bluetooth enabled {disable it to off unless you use it all the time i use it once a month max}

    2} wifi enabled like all the time

    3} location and siri set to on   i cant use siri it dosny understand the scots  as for location services good idea for photos so leave it on sometimes for photos and google earth etc

    4} use the icloud like all the time

    if you push to it it pushes to you all the time   disable it it is a backup

    so upload once after a few months / weeks of use of the phone

    then once every so often

    it doesnt forget you if you forget it

    and the other thing is email i found apple support sends heeps of junk mail to me costs 3g and wifi and therefore battery

    use the power key to close the phone to standby after a call or etc session

    saves it a few mins of use a day

    i get ~ 6days this way

    new run it to 0 past warnings {two weeks ago} added all apps i wanted couple of games and heeps of music via my laptop usb {it does charge also but i ran it down to zero after filling it up with apps music and tools etc...}

    from a 0-100% recharge from wall {phone off} you get 5 days with 7hrs use

    then a 20% to 100% charge {phone on } you get ~6days with ~20hrs total use

    then well  this is then

    and with heavy use i have 1day 3hr

    with 6hrs use {wifi 3g and texts phone calls{2{long more than 20mins each}}}

    and 69% left to go...

    what is seems to me is that for a given incoming signal the phone outputs far too much rf power

    i use a plastic case

    as the phones antennas are top and bottom

    and there is issues knows for the iphone 4 antennas

    so to avoid this i got a screen protector and case for £2 from ebay

    i think the RF in doesnt effector the RF out

    hence the phone uses far too much power

    there is only unit power to concider here

    1} rf TXRF mixers +PLL

    2} 2X MPCU

    3} 1X display and touch

    4} wifi chipset

    5} bluetooth   {prob unified with wifi and 3g output mux}

    so in terms of power only numbers 1,2,3 CAN  use the sort of power drain thats going on

    somepople say ohhh 3g bluetooth network etc is using the power

    this is rubbish

    as these simple ic's are physicaly incapable to draw that much current

    they run on 3.3v and draw like a few miliamps at max  in standby maybe uamps

    so..  it must be the rf stages or mcpu or display sections

    that has a software bug

    most often induced by the user
