Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

Hello it's me again to report how my iPhone has been getting on. Its been okay I think, I left it on all last night (without being on charge) and for the 7 hours that it was on for it only went down to 99%! Crazy, I got all exited thinking it was fixed but then I went on safari and youtube and it drained it a little bit but not by as much as before. Heres my stats on the Usage bit.

    Usage: 4hours 22minutes

    Standby: 18 hours 56 minutes

Yeah thats a lot of standby time but only because I left it on overnight last night and today I have only been using it when I really need to, plus I've been at work so I could only go on it at break. The most amazing thing is though its still at 45% charge right now with all the precautions taken and the brightness dimmed (but not too much).

I also taken off 80% of some apps and games I had on there, I've only kept the games and apps that I love and use a lot. Now I think this its what is causing so many problems. Apps that are not supported yet by iOS5 and third party apps. I could be wrong but maybe a lot of us have an app or two on our devices that maybe is effecting it in some way. I'm quite happy with how much charge I have left to be honest, its a **** sight better than before. I would do a battery calibration like you told me but I've already done it on my first day having the iPhone and its only advised to do it once per month isn't it?

lets face it if it turns out to be an rf issue its no better than the iphone4 was

in some types of terrain or case and terrain

i always use an indoor passive antenna

you use two car antennas with 'thru glass' coupling

one inside one outside the window

    will increase your interior signal {wont work well on double skin or more glass works}

    or use some silver micro coax and two old carphone antennas {much better by far DB}

? do you have icloud enabled

as every change you make gets pushed to it

    THEN!!!! pushed back to you??

:. its the icloud server has an issue and not the iphone 4s

and perhaps an outgoing RF power ramping issue dependant on incomming signal avalible

ie it uses far more power than needed to com to the cell your locked too

As I stated in my previous post I have taken all the precautions and 'Battery Saving Tips' that are out there at this very moment. I don't really like the idea of iCloud anyway, I prefer to do everything from my laptop, I'm old fashioned that way. In fact I would say I've taking more precautions because in the 'System Services' bit I only have ONE thing  set to on. Yes just one, which it Mobile Network Settings (I think). I am not using push. I fetch every one hour or so. Most of my notifications are off apart from some of the obvious ones like mail, messages etc. So I pretty much think I got it covered.

so what sort of max usuage are you seeing

i agree with you on your points

personaly i would like a set of quick set icons added to the iphone itop

that themselfs are gouped to use and adjustable by tickbox etc...

i think the battery does last a very long time

    so far i got 6days to 20%

    by a bit of optimisation

and this term ill get ~ 8hrs use and 3days i recon

but i am using it harder now

    so perhaps not

i am looking at power input types now

and not moaning about the battery

    but i did at first

now i am happy .. for sure

perhaps some people need to book a trip to an apple shop

and have it zapped to the latest o/s etc

as many people also report issues if they update via other than usb cables or docks

so...  the jury it well and truly out on the bat issue for sure

all i know is it cost me so far about 40mb in crap emails from apple i cant get rid of

if i turn everything off in the email preferances

this stupid site  send me guess what

    hehe

    a blank email

if this is a reflection on apple in general

perhaps they should never ask the 'mirror' question

My phone's battery after getting 4 days standby 8 hours usage decided to flake again after recharging to 100% from zero. I was getting identical usage nd standby with all te settings set to conserve battery. Off to Apple I went I am on phone number 3. First was returned for another issues. They could see wacky battery function when they looks at my diagnostics . So here I am setting up from new for the 4th time. If it gives me consistent battery life it will be worth it.

    do a soft reset first

perhaps is a jammed up app unhandled exception {divide by zero } will hang an instance if you reopen it the instance will hang using mcpu time accross one core  the other core will try to maintain processes and hence the total 100% mcpu drain

    or something left open

you MUST make sure to close all browser pages and app browsers

    try that first

    before a reinstall o/s etc{better with apple store and a free visit under warranty}

all very well iphone number x

but post your model numbers please

    i have in previous posts

    so lets all wish....

    that on this new year

1} apple fix there icloud server to not hog your 3g {wifi i tested using the wifi from the phone connected via the laptop on the fly to the net

    using netmon v3  and apples servers push icloud info when its not needed }

2} people use icloud as soon as there phone 'comes alive'  bad news this is a backup service so use it that way fully

3} the iphone i see provides me a much increased field strengh when the signal is normal

ie if i attenuate the incoming rf  the outgoing stays at full

much as normal seems it provides full output rf from any signal input

and i live just below a cell

4} its not a fault its the debug thats going on we cant see is causing issues

however it keeps people busy typing just like me

    4 rules

now three more how to make money

1} costs in fixing hasle etc

    2} costs in 3g

    3} email costs

    = BANDWIDTH = REVINUE

so it must pay apple far more to have issues than to fix them then and there

and this is the first rule of computers

    i rest my case

    im sick of apple support

infact i really dont need apple for anything past  hello i have one of your products that may eventualy perform

    fully

mostly to be fair becouse there third party support isnt so hot

but becouse they get or must get leaned on by phone providers and licences...

    in judgement

    TERRIBLE

Off topic - but if you are trying to ditch the email notification here and keep getting blank emails despite answering no to all of the email preferences, scroll to the top of this page and on the right hand side is a link to stop receiving emails for this topic....   Hoping this works.

On topic.   After upgrading to 9A406 my standby seems more in line losing about 1/2 percent every hour (probably from the constant stream of email notifications coming from this thread).  However, when I use my phone for very casual twitter/facebook and web it still eats the battery super fast.    Consistently getting about  5 hours of light usage (texting, wifi, no cell calling) and about 3/4 of a day standby.

Been an staunch iPhone supporter but the lack of response to this issue has me questionning that.

I would have to tell you my max usage tomorrow as my phone isn't flat yet. Your stats on the other hand are quite overwhelming! You mean to say you have had 6 days usage out of your phone and it was still at 20%. I find that difficult to believe with all the problems I've been suffering of. haha. The way I see it is if I can get through a whole day without it going dead on me then i'm okay with that because then I just charge it overnight when i'm (clearly) not using it. Then get up, take it off charge and start over again. It doesn't bother me too much it not lasting more than a day (although really it should do anyway). I just hate it going dead on me halfway through the day. But like i say i've think i've nailed it now, I've only used my phone when I needed to and it still has 40-45% or so charge left, so i'm happy. (for the moment)

edit: oh and that empty messages you are getting must be SO annoying! Especially when its costing you data. I'm lucky because I'm getting 'all-you-can-eat-data' on a £15 a month pay and go sceme on Three UK. I also get 3000 texts and 300 mins which is enough for me really.

did ask for help its better one single thread with many strands

than one thread on a topic

    BUT  i didnt know this

apple is so good atg popping up

    where is the helper...???

it begs the question  why i had to turn off everything to get 6 days and usage out it   much like a 2g

and my emails etc used so much

how many other uses are going thru these routines without knowing

it begs the question why email notifications

arent something you choose to enable

    much like this iphone

    it arrived fully enabled

    as does this website

terrible bigendian for sure.. to the extreem

i do know one thing that if you HARD use a lithium cell from new

you will cause inherant damage to its tea bag like cell walls

so its i think as soon as you get a new phone

turn off all the bells and whistels plug it into the usb

update it add apps and music etc

then use it just for calls and messages till it goes to zero past the warnings

    then first charge it

    and wind it up slowly

    worked for me...

Just did a quick little test.   Switched to airplane mode and then just scrolled through my app pages back and forth.   Ended up losing 2% in 5 minutes.  Ran app "System Status" and avg CPU usuage was about 55%.

Going to have to check that vs my 3gs...   Ipad 2 shows about 35% cpu usuage doing the same.

try a soft reset  hold the power button and browse button together till it switches off

then power it on and try the same test

perhaps somthing else hung when another app starts

i think thru typing its an application memory leakage problem

... and thats it ... its down to the memory management ...

    fully

dont forget the iphone 4s has two mcpus  it's a dual core

so will use less current overall .....

its not a mcpu issue i feel from all reading and my own usage and views

or the display it terms of time

if one mcpu is busy it will use around 40-80% of its time

if both are busy doing system tasking as well as memory status

    and also use 40-80%

this gives around 50% cpu use overall

and is this cpu1 or cpu 2??? is this stat real?? or 50% whats real

    then again

this is prob the same thing - system resorces time

so in a dedicated test using 55% of two mcpu is bad

but perhaps the app uses a single thread ???

as so many will {MOST}  bar some games DO

so dont expect your test to be accurate...

i dont know??? i have a masters degree in computer architecture

people put in single thread mpu core 1  level 4g apps

and expect them??? not to hang in the background and cause issues

    er ?? NO

what apps make use of both mcpus??? on 4g is the laught here

    3 things take current

    RF %35

    MCPU %35

DISPLAY %15 or more as use

    {use the power button after a call or use saves the mcpus and displays tasking!!!}

    CHIPSET %10

its a FACT  even itop icon apps and acc are NOT multithread

    nor is other dedicated services

the dual core is a 'strap on' at best.,..at the moment over the entire platform

perhaps this is where the problem is

    i recon mostly memory leakage

becouse a hung app will use say 20% per instance or less

    get real you guys

and follow the boot up rules
