Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

Do not forget the dual gpu from the 4S. The PowerVR SGX543.

OK  , today after charging overnight the device (using an IPAD charger) form 17%

and with cellular data OFF .  I can assure you that the device is behaving much much better ,

I've unplug it at 7:30 AM and now 11:00 with usage of 57min and standbye of more then 3:35 hours  it was only 96% !

must say  most of the time is was hooked up to WIFI network (wifi was ON) get mails with all this threds updates , (I have 2 exchange accounts and 1 gmail account ) wrote some SMS's (and got some)   made some calls , and play some music for about 20min.

so I think  this   related to a 3G issue , that  waste  device power unit.

and a new firmware for the modem might solve the problem , maybe it related to the fact that the device is both CDMA and GSM (I've never seen this kind of cellular device before the 4S )

Yor battery life vcould also have to do with (in the past) taking it off charge without it letting charge fully every month or so u need to let it charge till it is full, this problem probably occurs to you taking it off charge before letting it be fully charged.

The battery life for iPhone 4S is fine if one does not uses WIFI and 3g. So as one may see in this forum the 3G (and maybe WIFI too) is the one which take too much energy.

If one sets the iPhone 4S in "Airplane mode" the battery of iPhone 4S is great (as in Apple specification)!!! I find this very ironic to put a phone in Airplane mode in order to save battery!

Yes, more specifically is the chipset MDM6610!!! This is a new chipset and can be found only in iPhone 4s. This has been mentioned several times here!

    or maybe not...

yes, it is. Again, it is the chipset MDM6610 which handles 3G and CDMA and GSM.

    Here is more about MDM6610

OK ! design problem .. no matter what we do   , this is  huge ...

true fiasco to Apple /qualcomm ...

it like to operate TWO cellular devices at the same time , so basically the device can preform for 12 hours of  usage over 48 hours

add the ability to turn off  functions  that not in use on the chip ..

IF NOT .  Apple / Qualcomm should revised the chip (ASAP ) and start sell with an updated one .

and  the rest of the 4S owners should get nice atrractive , upgrade upon releaseing the next gen iPhone .

I got my 4s for Christmas and experienced battery issues over the next 2 days so I recharged fully and turned off siri, location services, turned on airline mode etc and left it on sleep for three days only awakening it three or four times for no more than five minutes at a time to check for text messages (and turned airline mode back on) and to show it to someone. After three days the battery was at 25%! I haven't had an iPhone before so cannot compare the battery life but I have got a few iPod touches and iPads which seem to last for ages with no problems. I charged it up last night as I am bringing it in to the shop this morning but when I check it I find that it has dropped to 90% with no use whatsoever since unplugging it last night (it still has EVERYTHING turned off).

Here is a new aspect to ponder. I charge my 4S overnight, using the wall charger. I unplug it and within seconds, the battery drops to 99%. Then, within a minute or so of texting, reading an email or web browsing, it drops to 98%, followed by 97%, etc. I then plug it BACK into the wall and wait till it hits 100% again. Once it does, I unplug it and all is right in the world. Now, you tell me...hardware or software issue? I am leaning towards software.

I've taken that in account and I've now changed it to manual Thanks for that, i'll check the emails when I want to from now on. I must admit emails for me isn't the most important thing so having it on manual and checking it every now and then seems better.

    Todays stats are:

    Usage: 2hours 1 minute

    Standby: 4hours 55minutes

    And i'm still at 84%.

    Thats not bad right?

Hi, been skimming through all the posts here and I have been looking to find a solution (as I'm sure many iPhone 4s users have) to the battery issue.

I just got a 4s two days ago and the first day I could practically watch the battery percentage drop.  I let it fully discharge then charged it to 100% (during which, it got very hot).

When I went to bed, I unplugged the charger and when I woke up 8 hours later, the battery life was at 85%.

    Is this considered normal?

    Thanks.

Without knowing what you were doing for the nearly 8 hours it was in use, that's not bad. You think that's bad, go get an LTE Android phone... Saw one writeup where the reviewer was driving using the built in turn by turn maps app with the phone on LTE. Even with it plugged into a car charger, it managed to run the battery flat in a few hours. LTE took more power than a charger could supply.

Well not really but some here will tell you yeah thats normal (because of the drain issue). So follow the "reset all settings" process posted several times here and see if that helps. Hot battery it a sign that something not quite right. Ususally corrupt  network or other settings causing it.

    Thanks for the quick response!

I think this one is defective and thus going back to Best Buy.  I also have the "echo" during calls problem that is so frequently reported.

If the replacement 4S is no better, it's back to the 4 for me.

Shame on Apple for releasing such a problematic device.

I'm not so sure about that. From what I have read the A5 is more efficient so takes about the same power at the A4 even though its dual core. Some lab (cant remember if PCMAG or CNET something like that)  have done a test on hardware and state the 4 and 4s are about the same drain as far as hardware. I cant say myself just what I read. I did also read some browser tests that stated A4 did not take as much power as the A5 loading test pages BUT since  the A5 was faster it cut off sooner so the power consumption was equaled out. (A4 was on longer basically since it was slower)  Again only what I have read I am not an Apple engineer or dont work for Apple.

I personally think its more in iOS and apps causing this issue but maybe we will know for sure soon.
