Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

I have the same problem as every1. I got iP4S on Tmobile UK and just got off the call with them, 12 minutes ate 6% of my battery. They don't have any fix for this, aknowledged that lot's of ppl complain about this but all the offered is a replacement which is pointless as all of them seem to have the same flaw. They said they had no word from Apple about this and no confirmation it's being addressed.

I charged it from 0% overnight, Since yesterday I swiched off widgets in notifications, changed to 1 item on all notifications, push/fetch is off and set to manual, icloud backup off except for contacts, wifi itunes synch is off, home sharing off, location services down to minimum, diagnostics off, brightness set to half/auto, siri raise to speak off, date & time auto set is off,  I also tend to kill off apps I don't use.

Today so far I made 2 facetime calls, browsed the net a little, listened to music for 1Hr, used few apps, made 2-3 phone calls, sent few txt/imessages, using WiFi as well through the day. Usage so far shows 2Hrs 44Mins & 6Hrs 19Mins Stdby. The battery is on 65% at the moment.

I used to have my iP4 up and running with comparable/heavier usage for 1.5 days but since upgrade to iOS 5 it's down on battery as well, not as bad as the 4S though.

I need to know Apple will sort this otherwise I'm locked for 2Yrs with this phone if I don't cancel by end of this week.

TBH I think it's the iOS rather than hardware as I observe similar issues on both 4 & 4S..

    Good day to all!

I have the same issue. I took my phone back to the apple store who replaced it (after much argument with the staff and manager) and confirm that I have the same problem on the new phone.

This means that it is either:

    - iOS5

    - iCloud

    - Combination of the both

    - iPhone 4S Hardware / Battery

The battery is unacceptable. The technology hasn't improved, it has gotten worst. I would be more than happy for Apple to call me this further but to be honest, I am loosing faith in this product.

    I have:

    - Switched off Siri

    - Switched off all location services

    - Switched off all notifications

    - Switched off Bluetooth and Wifi

    - Turned the brightness down

And the above doesn't improve the life at all. I just don't see the point of the iPhone 4S if you turn off all these features. I work with a team of people who all have iPhone 4's and the battery is SO MUCH better!

    Apple - Please Sort It.

Having same issues.  Replaced my 64 GB 4S at the Genius bar the first time.  Second visit, they told me to use it more and the battery will get better.  FAIL!  Just called the 800 number and stumped him too, but now I will be going back to the store to replace my phone again.

I did download a utility (System Settings, but there are others).  Looking at those logs I see many many listing of WARNING kCalTimedDefaultAlarmChangedNote has been registered 20 times, this may be a leak.  I get those messages for many other processes too.  I just think my phone is running full blast crashing all the time.

Another was SignificantTimeChangeNotification has been registered 80 times, this may be a leak.  This happened while the phone was on my desk, not moving!

I get many of these warnings continuously.  Went from full charge last night at midnight, woke this AM (late) my phone had totally discharged and or course did not sound the alarm.

Most are listed as Springboard or calaccessed processes.

Apple, need to resolve this one.  It is a real problem and probably with your software.

Just been to the Glasgow Apple store and not alot of help to be honest..

The genius in there said he's pretty much had no complaints about 4s battery for a start..

Ran some diags tool on the phone which said the battery was fine..

Same diags tool said springboard had crashed a few times - home screen in other words..

Didn't suggest anything in terms of what should or should not be enabled..

Only suggestion was i restore again and try that..

Said they had no stock of replacements but if my 'yet another restore' didn't work he'd happily order me one.

Oh and amusingly the conversation started like:

Me - Hello i'm having a real problem with the battery on this {hands over phone} .. I got it here on launch day.

Genius - Hmm we'll it's likely out of warranty by now, we launched these well over a year ago.

    Me - Hello, it's a 4s

i cant agree more with all that has been said... i too am going to be looked in by the end of the week.

its worrying because at present if i sent my iphone back i will be floating around on contracts until i can find a phone it want which would be the nexus Prime.... but id need to get a ipod touch anyway cause i love using my iphone. it does everything.

as i have posted before and im sure all of you will agree before its a flashy does everything  iphone it needs to be able to last more than a day from 100% even on heavy usage all because if you come into and emergency and you need to make a call your phone is your lifeline. im afraid my iphone in its present state would be know use to anyone by 8 pm at night. unless i leave it off all day and become and anti-social hermit crab.

the iphone is great it always will be but i think if apple cracked the battery life and pumped more money into a the battery of the future they would win the smartphone market once and for all..

i had the HTC HD2 with a bigger display and had everything turned on all the time. and i only ever charged it once every 3 days.... i know smartphones arent ever going to last for ever but id be happy to get to the end of the day with 20% battery as long as i havent hindered my use in case it runs out in the time of need.... this is not fair.

On the same boat, getting about a day of light use, which is not acceptable. I'll give apple 2 weeks for a fix, if the problem is not addressed, this baby is going on ebay. At least now, there are options. It really is a shame, as I've spent a little fortune on apps, and after 3 iphones, it will take time to get used to android...

Having the same issue...called Apple support for the second time (100+ miles to nearest Apple store) and they told me they were unaware of any problems. He said it sounds like a hardware problem and that they would exchange it for a PRE_OWNED 4s. This is unaccecptable! I paid good money for a NEW phone less than 2 weeks ago. Why should I have to settle for a used one?

On the first call, he had me do the usual factory reset...reinstall ios5 and retrieve back up from the cloud. This did not work. Fully charged this morning...took it off the charger at 7:45 and by 9:00 it was already at 96% with absolutely no use whatsoever. Bluetooth off, location services only on siri and maps, full manual email. nothing is set to push, wifi searching off...it's almost not a smart phone anymore!

    Apple please help.

EDIT: It's now 9:30, absolutely no use, and it's down to 92%. (That's an 8% drop in less than 2 hours).

i think here you migh have hit the nail on the head..... i to have noticed this like loads of others. i is constantly looking for a WiFi connection even if its already connected as i said earlier when you put the iphone in standy by the wifi turns off. and if you hiot the home button and quickly look at the bit where the wifi logo is deisplayed it will eiher be on 3G or edge for a second or to before it connects back to the wifi

The iPhone has always done this for as long as I can remember.  Definitely not new behavior for iOS 5.

I thought I had fixed it by turning off location services because one night it didn't drain, but this morning it was dead again. Maybe I'll try rebooting before I go to sleep. Or maybe just shutdown completely.

If you have diagnostics & usage automatically being sent to Apple I would suggest turning if off!!!! My battery life was terrible..so terrible that I was considering returning it. I turned it off yesterday morning and it it MUCH better. I didn't have to charge last night and I am still at 50% today.

    Settings\General\About\Diagnostics & Usage......select Don't Send!!

What I don't understand is why we have to deal with battery issues time and time again, and why Apple can't get this right.  Many of the threads linked here were legitimate issues while some of them are just the result of unsuccessfully restoring from a backup.

I always setup my phone as a "new" phone after every software upgrade and I've experienced poor battery life numerous times with my 3G, 4 and now with my 4S.  I've even had a couple of experiences where I've lost extreme amounts of battery life in airplane mode (~50% overnight once) using iOS 4.3.5 on my iP4 and someone else recently posted about a similar experience with iOS 5.  When I took my phone into the Apple store, the Genius suggested that it was related to a software bug and that my email (Exchange) account was doing a lot of work in the background despite being in airplane mode.  I had just done a DFU restore of the software before this happened, so he replaced my phone despite the diagnostics suggesting that my battery was fine (which it probably was).  3-4 weeks later I had a very similar experience while on a cross country flight with the new phone, losing 13% in airplane mode while the phone remained untouched for ~4 hours.

With my 4S, I've tried every tip that's been suggested in this thread and elsewhere.  I firmly believe there are some serious bugs with email/Exchange/push accounts and that they've been lingering for a LONG time - well before iOS 5.  I'm not suggesting their aren't other issues with iOS 5 causing battery drain, but I believe this is one of them.

For now, I've set my 4S up as a new phone (again) and am trying the phone out for a couple of days without any third-party apps installed for a couple of days to see if that makes a difference.  Seems promising so far, but it's only been 1 full day.  Not that I'm willing to live with this solution for more than a couple of days - just trying to do some troubleshooting and then I can start adding apps back onto the phone.

Apple, I am more than willing to assist with whatever I can to troubleshoot these issues or collect data to help you in doing so.  I just want these problems to be fixed and I don't understand why some of these issues have been lingering for so long - well before iOS 5.  It's very frustrating.
