Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

Manchero - tats what mine looked like last night prior o going to bed. I didn't charge overnight as I wanted to drain to zero.

Rycm - as discussed I've past 3-5 pages, backup your phone to iCloud/itunes and thn connect to computer and do a full restore. Set up as a new phone and not fom iTunes backup. Once done go thru all stps, then restore from backup, I chose to use iCloud.

Looking good so far today. I have had 1.5 hrs on standby with 25 mins usage ad it's still on 100%, whereas before it would ave been about 96-97%.

    Hope that helps.

This worked for me. I still haven't completely drained the battery yet, but I've already noticed a significant improvement.

happy new year all. @sbailey4 thank you for your pc tech talk thread. I followed it to the T on my 4s 64 gig phone I have only had less then a week and the first day battery drained out in less than 3 hours. Now BAM after doing your reset and letting the battery drain out completley It holds an awesome charge time and I used it a lot yesterday night for NYE chit chat and instagraming. havent even charged her and shes holding at 78%. Thank you sooo much for posting this.

    Have an awesome 2012.

Cheers to all my fellow Apple lovers.

Glad thats working for some of you. Happy new year to all you guys as well.

I was speaking to another friend of mine who supports his companies IT systems and iPhones and he has confirmed that most of the problems he sees with battery are also related to apps that may not be optimal for iOS 5.0. Some of the settings he uses are as follows:

iADS and time zone off (as previously stated)

Ask to join for wifi =off

Of course only locations and notificatons you really need on not every app.

Well, here is my follow up:

I followed sbailey4's tips to reset/restore and shut off the recommended location stuff, allowed the battery to drain and recharge.

It seemed a little better at first (esp. in standby) but the battery percentage dropped at an alarming rate while in use.  I decided to throw in the towel on this phone and returned it to Best Buy.  I ended up getting the white model (and quite a bit of attitude from the "experts" at Best Buy).

Well, I must say this one is far better than the first.  I am still waiting for the battery to drain out and I have not even plugged in in to synch and have used it quite heavily.

In my opinion, there are both software and hardware issue on some 4S's (I believe my first one suffered from both).  It all depends on the luck of the draw.  I suggest rather than fighting with your phone and solving Apples quality control problems for them, return as many phones as it takes to get a good one.  That should get their attention!

    Happy New Year

I hate to ruin the atmosphere but i did the whole "reset all settings" thing, fully discharged then fully recharged and the battery is still going down 1% every 3-5 minutes. It's just depressing at this point, one thing I've noticed is that I'm still on 9A405. Currently at 95% with usage of 25 mins and standby of 31 min. VERY DEPRESSING, don't think I've even had it on standby that long. *waits for people to say its a hardware problem*

The standby time is also going up even though I'm not putting it on standby. I'm accepting it's a hardware problem.

I  have a 32 gb sprint phone. I have tried a lot of things on here. I tried installing 9A406 and then I could not activate my phone cause it kept saying need sim to complete and the phone didn't even have one. I took to apple and they couldn't fix it and had to replace the phone. I turned iCloud off and thought that would help, but it didn't really. I am not sure what happened when I installed 9A406, and I'm afraid to try it again cause I'm sick of replacing phones. Cause it happened once before just doing a factory restore as well. They couldnt figure it out then either.

I don't have a solution or know what to expect anymore. But i really don't think apple is working on this. I mean no comments, nothing. And apple is known for its silence.  But are any more software updates coming? What is gong on with 5.1 if it even does exist. And is apple still calling people asking questions like they did when they released 5.0.1. Did they even test this phone before release? Something just doesn't add up. 200 hours standby, 10 hours of use, etc. I don't get anywhere close and im not sure alot of people do.

I wish it could be fixed. I can't recommend the 4s to anyone no matter how big of an apple fan I am. It's been a real disappointment. And like most people here, I have owned a lot of apple products. I. Open to suggestions or ideas if anyone has them on how to fix it. . Maybe we need to get apples attention, petitions, something to break the silence. But I think the 4s is past hem and people are still Buying it. They r probably looking to the iPhone 5. Happy new year.

After reviewing the posts yesterday, here's what I did and it fully restored the battery life to what it was when I first got the phone.  After charging to 100% I was at 91% after 5 hrs 30 min of standby and 40 min of use.

1 - I deleted most of my apps (the ones I added most recently around the time my battery started having issues)

    2 - I "reset" in the Settings/General

3 - I let the phone battery cycle to zero

    4 - I recharged to 100%

    5 - I "reset"again

    6 - I deleted my email accounts/rebooted

7 - Added email accounts back

Not sure which one of these steps fixed the problem but I figured it was either one of my apps or a corrupt contact after reading through the various posts.  Good luck.

This isn't unusual. Most Apple products don't have very good batteries. The MacBook has a terrible battery, iPod touch, and iPhone. Also, you have to keep your battery in good condition. Here are som tips to keeing you battery big:

    1. Press the Home button before locking your iPhone/iPod so that no apps are running in the foreground. But this dosen't close them completely. Double click the Home button so the multitasking bar comes up. Then hold down on the app you want to close. Once the little minus sign shows up in a red circle, tap it, then it will be completely closed.

2.Bluetooth adds significiant drain to battery life, and if you are not using the hands-free kit then you way as well turn it off.

To turn off Bluetooth, tap Settings>General>Bluetooth>then switch "Off".

3.Kepping push mail on drains battery. Turn it off to save battrey.

Settings>Mail>Contacts>Calenders>then switch Push mail to off and Fetch to Manually.

4.Turn off Wi-FiWhen your phone searches for W-Fi, it uses a lot of battery.

5.Dim the screen. This is one of the most significiant way to drain power.

    6.Reduce Auto-Lock time.

    7. Disable 3G/4G when not in use.

    8.Keep it Cool. Keep your iPhone/iPod between 0 and 35 C (32 to 95 f)

    9.Turn off EQ. iPhone: Settings>iPod>EQ>Off iPod:Settings>Music>EQ>Off

    10. (Recommended for iPod touch and iPad Wi-Fi) Turn on Airplane Mode. This turns off any Wi-Fi, phone, 3G, etc.

I'll post more tips some other time.

    Hope this helps!

HI, I did the restore to 9A406, and I dont see alot of difference:

    IMG_0009.PNG

Is the above normal? I think I got better power from my iPhone 3Gs. It was 100% charged ahen I went to sleep, when I woke after 8 hours, it was 92%, that's about 1% per hour of complete idle standby. 1 Hour 45 mins of light browsing and email, brought it down to 67%.
