Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

can anyone explain to me why when I fully charge my phone, after half hour of standby and some minutes of usage it drops to 99% or 98% and when i restart my phone it goes to 100% and stays there for about 1.5 hour standby and 15-20 minutes usage ???

Probably because there is bug in the iOS 5.X.X ....

Genuine Q - why do you need EVERYTHING turned on 24/7?

If you're travelling and not near a WiFi network why not turn off WifI? Ditto, unless you're using location services why do you need them on?

What I meant by everything turned on is Wifi network when I'm near a Wifi hotspot, then when I'm away I turn that off and turn on cellular data. As far as location services, well if I want Facebook to use my location so that my friends know where I am, camera to use the location to auto tag the pictures etc I should be able to do that without having to constantly go into settings>location services>on>select the apps for which to turn them off and then turn them back on AND without it constantly draining my phone's juice. It's annoying and time consuming and well the battery drain is just phenomenal.

But I'd even consider turning everything off if only I can have push email enabled without the battery drain.

    @enx23

What about iPhone 4 with iOS 4.3.X (and not 4s)?

From where will I buy a brand new iPhone 4 with whatever iOS? And besides I bought the iPhone 4S as a way of future proofing my phone you know? Because we'll be getting heavier updates with better features and I thought the iPhone 4S' dual core processor would ensure I could get by with everything for the next 2 years at least.

All battery usage is connected to how people use the device.

Whether there's an issue in iOS or not, people who take time to manage their device will always acheive higher battery life than those who don't.

    >> Turning off and on Wifi and cellular Data is really time consuming on iPhone 4s!

Turning WiFi off takes three taps. Turning it off when not needed will help save battery levels.

In an ideal world maybe it wouldn;t be neccessary to toggle it on or off, but if you want longer life from your battery while Apple fixes the issue, you're going to have to accept the need to park your idealism for a while.

Your use of WifI is exactly rhe same as mine. I'm at home right now so it's enabled. If I caught the bus or train I'd turn it off.

FWIW my iPhone 4S has been on my desk (not charging) since about 10.30am when the battery was 100% charged. It's now 2.11pm. In that time I've taken 2 pictures, emailed them and checked my settings as part of responding to this thread. Battery is currently 93%.

I don;t use Bluetooth and location services are switched off.

I've had my phone since late December and that sort of battery life is typical for me.

I bought my iPhone 4S and it has been having the best battery life I've experienced from the other phones I use to have. My battery was down to a 1/4 charges after 3 days. That is definitly the best I've ever encountered. Your battery life will depend on how much usage you put out of it. I have disabled the auto-checking of email for one. I manually check it now when I want. Eliminates continuous auto-search and checking. Also, I don't use iCloud in backing up my software. I sync directly to the comp for backups. Even disabling some location services with save battery life. Anyways...It all boils down to the user and what they want/like to do. Good luck!!!

I had battery problems when first upgraded to ios5.  After checking here, I did a restore as a new phone.  This removed all my folders and organization but it solved the battery problem.  Did the iOS 5.1 install with no issues.  Hope that helps.  This was for a regular iPhone 4.  Two other iPhone 4 in the family had no battery problems.  Also son has 4 in family and no major problems.

I understand that the 200 hours standby from the specifications of iPhone 4S are when one keeps the iPhone 4S in Airplane mode in standby!!!! Airplane mode means that no phone calls can be received!!! I find it horribly wrong that one measures the battery life for a phone when the phone is kept in "Airplane mode".

Not exacty true. The .5% per hr standby will work with cell data and wifi on all the time . Does not have to be in airplane mode.

The problem is that I'm quite in love with the iPhone and its ecosystem. I'm just not an Android person and I don't know what I'll buy after getting my iPhone 4S refunded. Android is out of the question. If only the battery could be fixed. 26-30 hours of usage with everything turned ON would make me very happy with the iPhone 4S.

Just curious but why would you require 2 or 3 days without plugging in? Are you somewhere for 3 days with no electricity for an hour or so to get it back to 100%?

Not sure why folks are demanding that much time when it only takes a hour to fully change the phone and can be plugged in at night or some other time when close to an outlet or computer. Again not flaming you just curious.

I completely agree with you.....   I EXPECT to be able to get through a full day with moderate usage and always have charged my phone overnight.   I'm not sure what the fixation is on being able to go for days at a time on a single charge.   I see the gyrations that people are going through to try and get 2 - 3 days out of a charge and wonder how all that effort can be worth it!   Not to mention those who unplug the phone BEFORE going to bed, then lament the fact that they show less than 100% charge in the morning.......    We are a strange group, us iPhone users!!!!   ;-)

This is not about how to use better battery life! This is about a smartphone, projected to be able to make calls, use wifi and 3g/ 4g connection at same time, nofications, location, and do not be dead so soon because of that. For the price of unlocked iphone 4s, the battery should have 1 week of life.

I found a tricks ! It worked very well for me, it boost my IOS iphone battery for 90% battery of 1 Hour 30 min of use ans 3 hours of standBy.

    Reset your Iphone 4s completely.

    - Reset all settings includins note contact calendar etc.....

    - Plug your "New" Iphone to Itunes

    - Sync and choose only Apps who worked with the Iphone.

    - After that, go to your Iphone and set up your contact and calendar from "Icloud" and once it done.

-Shut off "Icloud" and Keep your contact and calendar....reminder.... on your Iphone.

Since i did that, everything works great for me !

The iPhone isn't sold as having 1 week of in-use battery life.

It is sold as having up to 200 hours (8 days) of standby OR up to 8 hours talktime on 3G. OR yu to 6 hours web use on 3G.

If you use it the battery life will be nowhere near the standby prediction. Standby means the phone's not doing anything, including constantly connecting to determine its location or keep a Bluetooth connection.

    Apple clearly state

"All battery claims depend on network configuration and many other factors; actual results will vary. Battery has limited recharge cycles and may eventually need to be replaced by Apple service provider. Battery life and charge cycles vary by use and settings. See www.apple.com/batteries and www.apple.com/iphone/battery.html for more information."

They are indications, not hard guarantees.

4S battery life is shockingly bad, and much worse is the last iOS 'upgrade'.

anything less that 40% is effectivly 'empty' - 3 times now it has turned itself off during phonecalls with betwwen 30-40% left... on turning it on again, I'm presented with the empty battery symbol, but on connecting a charger it then reports 30% battery!

I regulary lose 30% overnight (location services, automatic time updates etc. are off), and god forbid that I set an alarm to wake me in the morning!
