Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

My battery drops 1% every 3-5 minutes when I use it with wifi on but cellular data off and push functions off. I don't have games and musics. I have some social communication apps but I've made sure that their push and notification settings are off. I just tested it with cellular data on and wifi off when using it, and found that with cellular data on it drops even faster when using it -- probably 1% every minute. So I want to ask you guys your situation: do you also experience the same thing that the battery drops 1% every 3-5 minutes when using it with wifi on?

    Thanks!

Your use of WifI is exactly rhe same as mine. I'm at home right now so it's enabled. If I caught the bus or train I'd turn it off.

FWIW my iPhone 4S has been on my desk (not charging) since about 10.30am when the battery was 100% charged. It's now 2.11pm. In that time I've taken 2 pictures, emailed them and checked my settings as part of responding to this thread. Battery is currently 93%.

I've lost 10% in exactly 4 hours. That's 2.5% an hour with everything turned off (no wifi, no cellular data and no location services).

The problem is that I'm quite in love with the iPhone and its ecosystem. I'm just not an Android person and I don't know what I'll buy after getting my iPhone 4S refunded. Android is out of the question. If only the battery could be fixed. 26-30 hours of usage with everything turned ON would make me very happy with the iPhone 4S.

Just curious but why would you require 2 or 3 days without plugging in? Are you somewhere for 3 days with no electricity for an hour or so to get it back to 100%?

Not sure why folks are demanding that much time when it only takes a hour to fully change the phone and can be plugged in at night or some other time when close to an outlet or computer. Again not flaming you just curious.

I never said the battery should last 2 or 3 days without plugging in. What I'm wishing for is simply to have a battery life that LASTS through at LEAST 1 whole day with cellular data and push email notifications turned on. And I know for a fact that is possible because Android handsets deliver that kind of performance without any issues.

26-30 hours is simply 1 day and 2-6 hours. I don't have an issue leaving the phone plugged in for overnight charging. But like I mentioned before in this reply, I'm losing battery at 2.5% per hour while the phone's not really doing anything. That's simply not a good enough performance.

"When using it" to me means you are doing something on the phone.   1% every 3 - 5min will give you 6 - 8 hours of "using it" which is excellent.

Now if you are seeing this drop on standby, that's a different story.......

    Standby: 7 hours 36 minutes

I have the same issue with my 4S. The battery was a disaster the first day and still when connected to Wifi...in about 4-5 hours after 100% battery power I had only 20% left.  And that was only after 1 hour of wifi usage and just opening and closing, sending some sms messages and 1 call!

I also experienced the bad battery life of the iphone 4s.

After my battery died last night I put it on charge using Battery Doctor. I also applied all the setting mentioned above. Round about 1.30 am my battery was charged. I unplugged my phone and left it on the side. When I woke up this morning my phones battery life was still 100%.Its now 7pm and after using the phone for some texts, phonecalls, facebook and email checking my battery is now on 76 %. Not that bad huh

4S battery life is shockingly bad, and much worse is the last iOS 'upgrade'.

anything less that 40% is effectivly 'empty' - 3 times now it has turned itself off during phonecalls with betwwen 30-40% left... on turning it on again, I'm presented with the empty battery symbol, but on connecting a charger it then reports 30% battery!

I regulary lose 30% overnight (location services, automatic time updates etc. are off), and god forbid that I set an alarm to wake me in the morning!

DMcK23 your issue sounds like a calibration is needed. The actual battery energy and the software reporting it are not in sync. You should  let it drain all the way until the spinning star and the iPhone cuts off on its own. Then plug in  and leave it until it reaches 100% and for a little bit afterwards. (maybe another 30 min to hour) overnight would be good. Once you do that it should operate more closely with what's being reported

547 pages of info. No actual fix from apple except 5.0.1 which really wasn't a fix. 547 pages with suggestions and things that may or may not work for some. I wish I had an answer or a solution. And maybe all of us are wrong and our expectations are high. But think about this 547 pages of a thread and nothin has really changed. No word from apple. No new updates or words of a new update. They took notice at first but now I think the issue is being ignored. The thread can go on but I'm not sure what's the purpose. Apple should at least acknowledge or say something. Perhaps a petition may be more effective. however, this is sub standard for apple. Oh well. But I don't think a new fix is coming or anything will be done. Focus is on iPhone 5

Unless you are living on another planet, you must know that iOS5.1 is in testing with a 2nd bata release?   APPLE has never and will never publicly discuss issues like this, so why people are so shocked is amazing.   You have two choices.......  Wait for iOS5.1 or return the phone.   Thinking that page 548 is going to bring a new revelation is just insanity.........

Ok  ok 1 day.. Interesting that everyone I personally know with iPhone 4s all have great performance and battery life and could not be happier. No one has any issues.Thats quite a few people. The few folks I know with Androids tell me how bad their battery is. I have never own'ed an Android device so cant speak from experience but the 3 or 4 folks I know who have them all say the same about horrible battery. And all are new owners too so not old devices. All I ever heard/read from past research was how much better Apple iPhone was with battery life than most any other smartphone. Thats why I chose to get the 4s. So I guess its all over the place. But from all the people I personally know ( not these forums and media saying how bad 4s is) the iPhone clearly is the better choice.  Wish I knew why everyones was not the same. (guess I would be top engineer at Apple if I figured that out)

This may have been discussed before (but I don't have time to read all 547 pages !!) but it seems there's a problem with Location Services running too frequently.

Advice I was given is to:

Go to the Location Services menu (in Settings), open "System Services" at the bottom of the page.

Turn OFF "Setting Time Zone" (which seems to run all the time on my iPhone), "Traffic" which apparently is not used in Europe, and "Location based i-Ads".

Also, cancel as many Notifications as possible, they use up loads of battery.

I love the iPhone but consider the battery life to be a real downer. What's the point of having one if you have to turn off the Bluetooth, WiFi, notifications and location settings to get it to hold a charge for a day's use ?

As someone pointed out, it only takes an hour or so to charge, but there are day's when I'm out all day with no possibilty of plugging in and that's usually when I need the thing most.

    [/end of rant]

You know I have seen this statement several times and its just BS. If you actually read through (i have most of all 547) 300 at least are "here is my  battery screenshot hows that look", or pages of the same fixes being mentioned over and over for the benefit of new comers.  So in the grand scheme of the multiple millions of these phones out there its a very small % effected and a lot of the folks here have reported successful results when following the fixes mentioned. So that makes an even smaller % still have issues.

The 5.0.1 did in fact fix a lot of users, and the fixes posted on these forums did in fact help a lot of folks as well.

Most issues (not all) are due to restores from older devices or bad 3rd party apps not playing nice with iOS 5.

I do wish Apple were not so silent but they always have been. They did state after 5.0.1 that they were still looking into some remaining issues so until they have it nailed down there is not much else they can say. I guess they could say it again over and over that "we are still looking into some remaining issues" and post that to the news every few days. But what good would it do? It just makes more since to focus on helping folks get their units properly setup and offer resolutions to the ones who can benefit from it rather than all the Apple *** BS that is doing no one any good.

I've just purchased the 4S to replace my current iPhone 2G, yes the first ever iPhone from 2007 .

I think its a shame that the 4S after four days of testing has the same battery life as my old current 2G that was charged way over a 1000 times. I wonder what would happen to the 4S battery capacity after 2 years of operation.

I just spend 699 EURO on a device that i planned to use for the next 3 years. its an embarrassment

Ok Guys Got it fixed, after weeks of going to apple store and researching.

Do a complete restore to 5.0.1 and do not, import your backup.

I have tested this for the last day, and everything is normal. Seems to be a issue with old data causing issues. I tried all other reported fixed, reseting all settings etc...

    Hope this helps.
