Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

I'd be happy to try that, but as a technical failure, how would I re-configure the iPhone and re-install the app's I've purchased ?

Sorry for the dummy question, but....

The APPS are associated with your Apple ID, so will re-download and install with a sync of your phone........

What exactly is the DFU restore?  What I do is I plug the phone into PC then run iTunes then click restore to "reset" the phone.  Is DFU restore more effective?  How do I go about doing it?  I searched online for guide to no avail.

Also, I noticed that when I wake the phone up from its locked state in my home where there is WiFi (which I am always connected to while at home), I briefly see on the notification bar that my 3G is on before the phone switches off to WiFi connection.  Maybe our phones are running on cellular data (3G) while it's locked and that is causing more battery drain?  Android phones do not have this problem...

It is, believe it or not, better for the battery to use WiFi than 3G... So having WiFi kept connected while sleeping should help.

Anyone see the same phenomenon?  Is there a way to not make it do that and make it stay connected to WiFi whole time when in WiFi area?

This is totally disappointing. Apple has never failed this hard before.

Berenj, did you do a restore from itunes? My battery is already at 93% with only 30 minutes of usage and 50 minutes of standby. It seems to lose 1% every 3-5 minutes while in use just like alohabj73 said. I already tried resetting the settings but that doesn't seem to have done anything. I have all of the system services turned off except for compass calibration and cell search. I also turned off bluetooth, push notifications, and icloud. I've pretty much turned off every conceivable feature that I don't need.

Glad this worked out for you. but i've done the same without result. Full restore, configure as new iphone, not restoring from backup etc etc.

Wow... this solution had been mentioned a hundred times in this thread....

    This was my last post:

As a final steep what I did was a full factory reset and no restore from previous backup, and kept the iphone with no apps installed (and no mail, nothing at all, just like a new factory OTB iPhone)  for a day ... Battery started behaving as promised, 0,5%/h!!!! and the other issue I had with battery not getting fully charged was also gone (my battery was charging to 70% max!)  so hardware issue was out of the table. thanks to sbailey4 who gave me many advices on how to improve battery life.

Now I've been enjoying a 1%/h since yesterday, with 3 e-mail account fetching every 30 mins, 3 or 4 calls of 5 mins aprox, no whatsapp, MSN Messenger online 24/7, and optimized settings for notifications and location services (please refer to previous posts to identify this settings).

As a conclusion I must say: Restoring backups was causing me this issue, there´s something wrong with the process of backup restoration, something in the background gets misconfigured (I don't know what exactly) so please don't do it until a new iOS build comes out. Just configure your phone manually, I know this is a PIA, but is the only thing that worked for me.

Just install 5.0.1 and after that do a settings reset (in my case I had to do a full reset, proceed as you wish).

My iPhone was 100% charged yesteday's morning at 11am, right now (8:40am of the next day) my battery is at 75%! It works!

    Thanks again to sbailey4!.

Today I started noticing that the battery was getting drained again at a 4%/h rate, and realized that the IR (proximity sensor) was always on (even though the Rise to Speak function was turned off), so I restarted the phone and now is working OK again .

I think my iPhone has suffered all possible battery issues, and this forum had been very helpful to solve them all.

Just like you did the first time you got the iPhone, configuring it as a new iPhone and syncing it with iTunes, selecting what to sync, etc...

Just: DO NOT RESTORE A BACKUP

If you are resetting only configurations you will have less work to do, just some basic configuration settings. You will not lose any app or data at all, the procedure "reset all settings" only does that, resets ONLY settings, not data.

Luis144, by full factory reset do you mean you selected "erase all content and settings" on the phone or did you do a restore through itunes?

    Erase all Content and Settings.

This will format your iPhone and leave it with nothing but the iOS with the native apps.

I would recommend you to not install anything (no apps, no mail, no nothing) for some hours to verify battery consumption on this "Out of The Box" or "factory default" state... you will note the difference, and after that, if you see a good battery behavior,  you can start installing one thing at the time to check what app(s) or setting(s) is causing the issue.

Everytime I install a new app or change a setting I start keeping the track of battery % to measure the impact.

    Hope this helps you.

Guitardude, 1% 3-5 min is normal usage.  That equates to like 6-8hrs of use. Of course it depends on the type of use, ie calls, web browsing or music listening. tha latter being a LOT less of a drain. I guess trying to determine the exact deal you are getting to compare to apples spec would require a controlled test. The specs are OR not ALL so you wont get 200hr standby AND 8 hrs of talk AND 6hrs internet use, etc. Its one or the other and under ideal circumstances.

Your stats (rounding to make it easy) 1/200 = .5% used for standby and .5/7.5 = 6% for usage so 100%-6.5%= 93.5%  so you are right there from what I can tell. The 7.5% is a combined average for cell and internet 8+6 figuring probably more internet use than cell. This should be pretty close. So not sure you really need to do anything else so it would apprear.

Okay, now this could be a complete red-herring, I admit it. However, I was looking at my CPU performance and system processes via BatteryDoctor and began closing open apps to see where things took me. I had mostly typical stuff open: Mail, Kindle, Settings, Music. I closed them all out and interestingly, my CPU became a little"spikier." Whereas it was around 2-3% on avergage it became a pendulum consistently swinging between 3-5% and 16-20% or more. I then began to do the reverse, and saw that an installation daemon opened while I launched Mail and held my CPU at 20% for around a minute or more. I realize the daemon may be coincidental to the Mail launch, however, how did it even spawn? I have no auto-update settings enabled. Mail launched and now my CPU is now very spikey, going quickly from 3 or 4% up to 30%, sometimes as high as 70% and back - very quickly.

I am starting to wonder whether some of our issues may be tied to a wonky OS scheduler or similar. I think the CPU might be burning power depending on the unique orders in which applications are opened, used, and closed. This might explain why some folks' results differ so markedly from others, even when both are making the same configuration changes. Anyhow, I thought this interesting and thought to share.

Yes the wifi off while asleep seems to be normal. Like oyu stated when you go to lock screen you see 3g for a second until the wifi fan appears. Interesting mine did not seem to do this when wi-fi sync was enabled. It appears to always be on so i deducted that wifi was always on then. I believe my battery improved by turning off wifi sync so I figured that was why. I do not have any battery issue btw. I had a slight issue with 5.0 but when updated to 5.0.1 it was a lot better. Now just the little items like certain app locations and notifications I dont need off, timezone,iADS, diagnostics and data, join wifi off as well. Stuff that I really dont want on anyway is off. Otherwise i have all the features I want on and have no issue. Bluetooth does not seem to matter much for me. I do leave it off when not in use but have left it on before and all seems fine (unlike old Blackberry which BT killed it fast) So back to your question I believe the wifi off during sleep is normal. May want to enable wifi sync to see if that makes it stay on if you think it will help being on all the time.

Has anyone figured anythiing out yet?  I did a full w/trickle charge last night to 100%  Today I used the phone maybe 1/2 hour or 45 minutes and I am down to 35% charge.  On my iPhone 4 I would charge every few days.  Seems with the iPhone 4s I will have to charge it every night or more.

My first phone was that bad, plus it had the infamous "noise" during calls.  It also got very hot when charging.  My second phone sounds great, but the battery life was mediocre compared to my old iPhone 4 until I did a full DFU mode restore and manually set the phone up without iCloud or iTunes.  Now it is just as good as my old phone.

It may be a hassle to set it up manually but it will be worth it in the long run.

Just a quick update and interesting article I ran across. I suspect several here are already aware of this if they had older devices but further evidence that iOS 5 is most likely is part of the problem. Mind you this is iOS 4.1 for older devices. http://www.iphonefaq.org/archives/971067

Any of the items mentioned sound familar?

Seem'ed they were fixed with further updates so there is hope for the NEW iOS5

What is a DFU restore?  Is that the same thing as pressing Restore on iTunes after connecting the device to PC?

    Please help
