Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

No its a little different process.  I believe it it typically used to put whatever version firmware you want on the iphone.  You can read about it here. http://osxdaily.com/2010/06/24/iphone-dfu-mode-explained-and-how-to-enter-dfu-mo de-on-your-iphone/ . Most of the time you just want/need to use the restore process within iTunes. That will bring down the latest version they have released (including the new 5.0.1 9A406 version)

    @guitardude7:

I exprienced almost the exact same thing: 1% drop every 3 to 5 minutes and most of the features being turned off. But when using it, most of the time I had wifi turned on but not cellular data on. So my question is, what did you use for network connection for most of the time: wifi or cellular data?

i used wifi for all of the time actually. the 1% drop seems to happen a lot quicker than every 3 to 5 minutes sometimes.

Apple has reported that there is a bug in ios 5 when updating and when apple released iOS 5.0.1 it made it even worse! Apple will eventually release a new software to fix the problems.

    Well same problem here.

    I have the following scenario:

    - if I turn off Cellular data, then the battery drain seems somehow ok (1% / hr)

    - if I turn Cellular data back on, battery lasts max 8 hours if I'm lucky

From this I guess there should be a problem with how phone is handling 3g data.

If I browse with safari over WiFi (same page), the phone keeps normal temperature, nothing to notice really.

If I browse the same page over 3g phone gets warm all around the antennas and on the back - to that extent that it's uncomfortable to hold... And the battery drain is like 1%/minute even when doing nothing on occasions.

I also noticed that when cellular data is turned on iphone keeps loosing signal and reconnecting to the network with occasional "no service" and "searching..." on the bar...

    ---

Turning 3g data off fixes some of the problems for me for now to make the phone usable when I am in wi-fi range.

Should I return the phone due to overheating while on 3G or are you experiencing the same phone heat in the back while using it on the 3g?

To stop the battery drain I did everything that was mentioned but couldnt make it stop (I tried restoring, resetting,..)

    Indeed!

Yes, Apple will release iOS updates for fixing the photo streaming problems, shaking bug, and so on. For Apple is more important  to fix the photo streaming issue than the battery life issue!!

There is no official info from Apple that is working on the battery issue or on the static noise issue!

Here is a history of iOS 5 updates:

    - iOS 5.0.0 beta => battery issue not fixed

    - iOS 5.0.0 => battery issue not fixed

    - iOS 5.0.1 beta => battery issue not fixed

    - iOS 5.0.1 build 1 => battery issue not fixed

    - iOS 5.0.1 build 2 => battery issue not fixed

    - iOS 5.1 beta 1 => battery issue not fixed

    - iOS 5.1 beta 2 => battery issue not fixed

How many iOS updates and how many months (soon iPad 3 is launched) are needed more in order for one to realise that the battery life issue is not a software issue or an issue which can be fixed with software updates?

Way too many months have passed and too many iOS updates have been released already which did not fix the battery issue.

This is not problem to be solved by Apple

    It's Qualcomm's problem

Im positive sure  that this  chip is the one to blam

when I'm turn off the cellular data the performance is fine ! I can survive a full day. Starting 20%

So I guess apple can't do a lot  they have to rewrite the code.

My iPad 2 can work a week with everything on including 3G on a single charge !

And the only difference to 4s is that chipset - bad idea to combine CDMA and GSM

    To a single device .

I'm writing this post from my 4S over wifi and lost only 1% and English is. Not my mother tongue

    Agreed!

It's been like nearly 3 months, and the fix for the battery issue is still nowhere to be seen or heard. I doubt those cheap a.s.s people at Apple are ever going to fix the issue.

At this rate I think they just going to contiune to ignore the issue until the next iphone is release.

I'm in the same situation.  My battery life is terrible.  I was imessaging my friend about it (on wi-fi) and over the course of 12-15 minutes I lost 10% battery life.  Only safari, phone, messages running in the background.  Do we contact apple directly or contact our service provider to complain?

It is better to contact Apple because Apple is the one who designs/makes the iPhone 4s!

Here are some tips (from my own experience) when contacting Apple:

    - instead "battery life is bad/terrible" use "my iPhone 4S is discharging very fast". If one says "battery life is bad" Apple will just measure/test the battery and it will tell you back that the battery is fine even that you meant that is something wrong with the entire iPhone 4s like for example a faulty chipset which draws too much power!

    - it is a good idea to call first/before to your network carrier and ask if they have issues with the network in your region because Apple will most likely blame the network carrier (especially if you have also static noise issue) for your iPhone 4s not working well. With a little bit of luck maybe your network carrier will even tell you that the problem is with your phone and then later you can tell that to Apple. If you do this then you can tell immediately to Apple that your network carrier is fine and save some time!

I delibrately didn't charge my iPhone last night and here's what the usage stats currently show:

    Usage: 1hr 23 mins

    Standby 1 day 0 hours

and I have 75% percent battery.

I have to wonder what some people are doing to their phones if they're dropping all charge just sitting in the desk as some seem to claim.

Soon, iPad 3 will be launched and most likely Apple is working now on iPhone 5 and already iPhone 4S is a "last-year" phone (which will be known as the miserable-battery-life-phone)!

Consider yourself lucky, just because you don't have any problems doesn't mean everyone else has a perfectly working phone. Why on earth would I try to find a soloution to a non existing problem, and write here to get some help?

If my phone was working as it should, I would be using it the way I wanted to, not trying all sorts of solutions to get some acceptable battery time out of it.

I will return my phone and get a working one, when I know Apple has fixed what I consider to be hardware issues.

Are you keeping all the time Cellular Data on? Are you keeping Wifi on all the time? Are you connected to a 2G or 3G network (please note 3G network is different that Cellular Data)? Are you on CDMA or GSM network?

I have to wonder what some people are doing to their phones if they're dropping all charge just sitting in the desk as some seem to claim.

Again this is not about the users of iPhone 4s and and how they use their iPhone 4s. The point is that if one user is using the exactly the same way and in the same conditions one iPhone 4 (with iOS 4.3.X) and one iPhone 4S the iPhone 4S will discharge a lot faster (way too fast) than iPhone 4!!!!

iPhone 4S is not a car which requires:

    - a license to use

    - passing a test to get a license

    - study for hours manuals before you start to use it!

iPhone 4S is supposed to be a smart phone and not a dumb phone. I think that the culprit is the iPhone 4S and not the people!

For now it looks to me that if one uses the iPhone 4S as a music player with dumb-phone capabilities (i.e. making/receiving phone calls on 2G network) then the battery life is fine.
