Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

    @rphunte42

Do you have any affiliation with Apple? Have you ever had any affiliation with Apple? Do you have or did you have any links (i.e. financial, business, etc.) to Apple?

I find strange that one builds here such a shiny image for Apple.

I found that battery life on any cell phone or smartphone will depend on the usage and how the user has it set up. My iPhone 4S battery has lasted me 2.5 days without charging and was down to 1/4 charge by then. That's pretty good battery life. I recommend (if you want to extend battery life) disable location features, auto-checking of email, and either turn off iCloud or just have one item in it activated, such as documents or something. I prefer to sync directly to my mac then having something stored or transfered from and outside source. I hope this helps. Good luck!

    Are you on Verizon?

Cyberman04 - can you check your 'usage' in the general settings page and tell me if the 'usage' time it reports is inline with your actual usage?

Frankly, your suggestions (which many agree with BTW), would make me question why I would ever spend the money on a smart-phone.   Disabling much of the functionality is unacceptable to me.   I would rather buy chargers to carry around with me and use the features available, than spend $400 for a useless dumb-phone.

Fortunately, in my world, I'm connected to wifi for a large part of the day.   My battery does not drain quickly unless I'm off wifi and connected via cellular data.   It makes a huge performance difference in my 64g 4s.   I have everything on except for lift-to-avtivate Siri and Time Zone location.   PUSH on (Exchange and Yahoo mail), Fetch for Gmail, BT on, Wifi on, notifications on, location services on, iCloud on, iTunes Match active, wifi sync on.   I've had the 4s since release day one and have did one RESTORE back a month or so ago.   Otherwise, I have just left it alone.

I understand a lot and you don't have to scream. For you it is normal to switch Bluetooth 5 times a day if get in and out the car, it is normal to switch data off and on - great for you, enjoy your 4s and this type of the usage.

You wrote you charge your phone at every posibility - what about the number of charging cycles?

We all know that the life of the battery is limited by the number of charges also - do you want to buy a battery every year?

We all know that iOS 5.x has five modes of suspending apps, in two of them the applications are running in the backround - i have to close them.

Apple has NEVER been quick to admit any fault.  This is nothing new, and no surprise.  Note that this is the first Apple product I have ever bought, but I have been around the computer business since 1965, so they aren't new to me.  I expect them to do what has worked for them in the past.  And you DON'T have to switch the features off, but you DO have to understand that every function you use depletes your battery by some degree.  There is no such thing as a free lunch.  We all know that constant use of GPS eats batteries, and using 'push' notifications, and email checking means constant communication over 3G or WiFi.  What some people seem to miss it that leaving a dozen apps running in the background also means that some of them are using battery power.

Yep! I turned off Siri an hour ago and my 4S is back to normal battery usage, as it had been until yesterday.

actullay that is far from true

the 4S is much faster than the 4. Siri is rarely useful and always slower then doing something when you have free hands

I was exaggerating of course, but not by much.   Who among us (those who have owned both) is happier with their 4s than they were with their 4?   I doubt many are.   My wife still has her 4 and I don't see a speed difference that is so great as to make me thrilled with my upgrade.   Especially given these battery problems.........

Any app recommendations or anything else that you identify exactly what your phone is checking for looking up running in the background etc

    :-)

With this speed of battery drain my 4S had actually turned itself from a mobile to a landline... Now I'm having a mobile phone again. And I hope this is only temporarily until Apple has fixed this issue.

I have to admit my 4S is significantly faster than my 4 was. My 4 became to slow after the last update

Apple to rollout iPhone 4S to 21 more countries, in other words Apple isn't concern about the battery problem, or actually there is no such problem. Probably I have to accept the facts that one full charge for 4+ hours usage is normal for iPhone 4S, and if I want longer battery life then I have to follow the tips given in this forum, ie turn off cellular data, turn off location service, turn off iCloud, turn off push notification. Or to have best battery consumption, change to Airplane mode.

You're right dannywonglh, after 550 pages on this thread alone and all kind of other thread and websites mentioning this problem with no proper solution. We've got to accept it as it is...
